We had the most wonderful time at Ochiairo! I came here for a birthday trip with my husband and best friend and we stayed in the spacious Aofuji room overlooking the river. The spatial arrangement offered more than enough space and privacy for 3 people and probably 2 couples or a family and kids. The white noise lulled us to sleep every night and it was simply magical. The international staff was so helpful to us. While we don’t speak Japanese, they did their best to understand and attend to us and it all worked out. They went above and beyond making my birthday feel very special. It was the small details that really mattered - ensuring that we had bikes and activities arranged the night before, coming to our room to teach me how to wear my yukata when I asked them to help, and even cleaning out and lovingly packaging some souvenir bento containers we arrived with when they saw them in our mini fridge! Everything about this place is just so beautiful. A few notes: - THE BATHS! When I tell you that I screamed when I saw the cave and private onsen in particular - just trust that they cannot be missed. - We are all tattooed - one of us significantly so. They have small tattoo covers but ask that you do cover them in the main bath areas (I only know this because I asked and they were incredibly polite about the advice) - We brought tattoo cover but in case you don’t want to bother, please take advantage of the absolutely stunning outdoor private baths - The food is great and eat dinner in sitting rooms upstairs (not served in your room) - You get unlimited drinks (alcoholic and otherwise) and snacks which was another pleasant surprise because they are so tasty! - The koi fish in the front swim up to you and follow you around with such enthusiasm. It’s as if they’re little pond puppies. The staff allowed us to feed them so if interested, please ask. - Don’t miss the swing next to the suspension bridge! - While I loved our room - please note that there is an abandoned hotel directly across the river from it. Kind of ruined the “I am communing with nature” vibes but it was fine in the long run. I could go on, but just trust that this place is just exceptional!
Shuzenji Onsen Katsuragawa

■立地  修善寺駅から路線バス(220円現金のみ)で、みゆき橋下車2-3分。桂川沿いで新しい橋を渡った反対側。路線バスの修善寺温泉駅からも徒歩7分ぐらい。高層の大型旅館。紅葉の時は景色が綺麗かもしれない。 ■近隣アトラクション  無料貸出の電動自転車で虹の郷まで行くのがオススメ。自転車もPanasonic製で新しく、坂道でもパワフルだった。20分ぐらいで到着できる。虹の郷ではSLや富士山の景色などが楽しめる。また、修善寺温泉に宿泊の領収書などがあると、虹の郷は3割引に窓口してくれる。 ■部屋  部屋が広く、畳にベットを設置してあったので寝心地も快適だった。加湿器があったのが良かった。 ■食事  品数で勝負のビュッフェスタイル。子連れであれば、エンタメ気分で楽しめる。綿菓子などの縁日仕様にすればもっと楽しいかも。逆にごちゃごちゃしているので、ゆっくり楽しみたいや雰囲気重視の方にはおすすめできない。 ■アメニティ  旅館内のデイリーヤマザキのコンビニ前で好きなものを好きなだけ取るスタイル。大箱ホテルだけにこのように人件費・メンテコストを下げる経営努力は、合理的だと思う。浴衣が選べるサービスは非常に良いと思う。有料でスペシャルな浴衣があってもいいのでは?インスタ映えするようなデザインがあれば。 ■ホスピタリティ  チェックインが17時をまわりそうだったので、事前に連絡。その際は、夕食は18時と18時半の2回しかなく、19:45の2部制は今の時期はやっていないとのことで、昼飯も食べずに急いでホテルに向かう。宿のフロントでは、18時の次は、19時半の2部制と言われ、電話と時間の食い違い有り。それに対してクレームしたものの、受付の女性はクレームが日常茶飯事なのか、全くお詫びも確認もなく淡々としたもの。おそらく、電話の方は勘違いで時間を伝えたものと思われるが、こちらが19:45はあるのかと聞いて、ないと念押しをしているのに、間違った時間を伝えたのが残念。ミスは仕方がないが、受付のフォローがなかったので失望。

My family and I loved our experience at this onsen! The accommodations are first-rate and blend superbly a traditional japanese inn experience with modern comforts and luxury. The hot spring baths are all private and thoughtfully integrated into the rooms. It's incredibly relaxing to submerge yourself in one after a long day exploring the Izu peninsula! The service is impeccable and the staff are uniformly gracious and attentive. Finally, the food at the inn might have been the highlight! Breakfast and dinner are included and each is a high-class, multi-course meal. We were all amazed by how ornate, delicious, and varied the food was each time we sat down. Overall, we could not recommend this stay highly enough! It helped make our experience in Japan very special and one we'll cherish for many years.

Located near the downstream of the Katsura River, the hotel straddled both sides of the river. It is a historical building built nearly a hundred years ago with several phases of expansion. Check in was smooth though it took a while to finish. We went into our room and found it is one of the largest rooms we have ever stayed in Japan. The room was in fact a suite with separate bedroom and living room, and an additional sitting area, toilet and bathroom. My view was facing the hillside with lots of green. It was really an old house and it sounds when you are walking on the wooden floor. The hotel is quite big, with a restaurant, 2 public baths, one oudoor and and indoor, and 4 private baths, a bridge inside the hotel, a souvenir shop, a coffee room and many rest area. Free afternoon snacks and late night noodle is provided to guests. Japanese style dinner and breakfast was served. The quality and portion were both very good, and service was of course outstanding. I particularly like the option of soba in addition to white rice. Another excellent offer of the hotel is teh check out time of 12 noon. I have never stayed in a onsen hotel with check out time of 12, it gives you enough time to enjoy the hotel facilities.
Yagyu No Sho

I DON’T recommend this ryokan! It fails to deliver the quality of service that matches its pricing. Firstly, having a few bugs in the room might be tolerable, but finding them emerging continuously from the futon and mattress is unacceptable. Around midnight, bugs resembling termites started appearing from the bedding. We had no choice but to call front desk for assistance. Despite their efforts, the staff couldn't contain the infestation. Instead of offering a room change, they simply replaced the futon and mattress. Having stayed at luxury hotels worldwide, I've never encountered such an issue with bugs in the bed. This is intolerable, and the hotel’s response was inadequate and disappointing. The quality provided does not justify the cost. I have stayed at many onsen ryokans in Hakone and Izu, where the occasional insect might enter through the window, but the bedding has always been clean. Even at less expensive hotels, I've never experienced anything like this. It was extremely unpleasant. We couldn't rest or relax here. Even after the bedding was changed, insects occasionally appeared on the floor, and we spent the night worried they might crawl back into the futon. This is not the standard I expect from a luxury establishment like Yanagi no Sho. I am deeply disappointed. Telling someone that I had to call staff at midnight to deal with bed bugs would make it seem like I was staying at a roadside motel. The next morning, I voiced my complaints to the hotel’s general manager, who offered apologies but no substantial compensation. I recorded videos and took photos of the bugs on the bed. I won’t be returning and will advise my family and friends to avoid this place. Moreover, the onsen’s cleanliness was also a concern. The outdoor bath had leaves and insects floating in it, and the bottom was littered with dead bugs. I even took a photo of a large spider in the indoor rest area. Finally, the dinner was underwhelming and not worth the price. Despite hearing high praises about the food at Yanagi no Sho, the meals at other ryokans in Hakone and Ito, which cost half as much, were far superior. The only satisfactory aspect was the polite and attentive service from the dining staff. They were very courteous and meticulous in their service. The overall ambiance of the hotel was decent. I hope my unpleasant experience was an isolated incident.
Izu Marriott Hotel Shuzenji

I recently had the delight of staying at Izu Marriott, and I must say, it was a truly wonderful experience. From the moment I arrived, I was blown away by the stunning location of the hotel. Nestled in the picturesque town of Izu, the hotel is surrounded by stunning natural beauty. The hotel itself is equally impressive. It is well-designed and beautifully decorated, creating a relaxing and inviting atmosphere. The rooms are spacious and luxurious, with all the amenities you could need for a comfortable stay. What really stood out to me, however, was the exceptional service provided by the staff at Izu Marriott. They were incredibly polite and accommodating, going above and beyond to ensure that I had a memorable stay. Whether I needed recommendations for local attractions or assistance with my room, the staff was always available and eager to help. Especially thank Roshan and the front desk team, who provide exceptional service to us.
