戸隠のそば会席を食べたくて宿泊しました。 戸隠神社の中社の近くにある旅館です。 お部屋のお茶菓子には、碓井製菓さんの落雁が用意されていました。 この碓井製菓さんの五穀大福はとっても美味しくて、旅館から歩いて5分程の距離にあります。 大浴場は小さいですが、お部屋はキレイです。 会席料理は、蕎麦を使ったお料理や季節の食材、地元の食材が使われています。 ヘルシーな内容ですが、お腹がいっぱいになるので、お食事の最後に出るざるそば分の お腹をあけておいてくださいね。

The host was AMAZING! She went out of her way to make Gluten Free food for one of my sons and the food was OUTSTANDING!! She even drove us to the train station when we couldn’t fit all of our luggage in a taxi. The Ryoken was clean and very comfortable. We loved it and wish we could have stayed longer!!

If you want to stay in Nagano, you want to stay here. Zenkouji Fuchinobo is situated at the entrance gates of Zenkoji Temple on a street lined with historic, stunning, magical temples... It was one of the most peaceful, spiritual stays we've ever had in Japan. Snow was beginning to fall and it seemed like we were in a fairytale because of the magic of this place. We stayed on the top floor, overlooking the snow-filled street, and the room was absolutely gorgeous. We slept so soundly here, with the most comfortable futons, and our bellies full from the most exceptional meal. We were served Shojin Ryori cuisine, Buddhist vegetarian food, and for me as a vegetarian... It was a dream! My husband is not vegetarian and it was one of his most favorite meals in Japan. We were able to enjoy a private onsen to ourselves because we were the only guests at this time. We also enjoyed the early morning meditation service at Zenkoji with a wonderful English-speaking guide. We were welcomed by the staff with such service, care, and kindness during our stay here. Thank you for making our stay so special in every way!

宿坊極意（ごくい）は、長野県長野市戸隠（ながのけんながのしとがくし）にある旅館だ。 もともとは寺の宿坊で1815年に建てられ、国の登録有形文化財に指定されている。 この日は2020年10月20日、戸隠神社に参拝した。 そこから車で、宿坊極意にやってきた。 紅葉している。 重厚な玄関。 入ると、参拝所がある。 今回はGOTOキャンペーンを利用しているので、格安で宿泊できた。 チェックインし、部屋へ。 今回は和室だ。 いかにも古そうな梁がむき出し。 トイレ付きの部屋を頼んだつもりが、勘違いでトイレ無しの部屋になっていた(汗；) 夕食に行くことにしたが、階段で頭を打ちそうで怖い。 夕食会場は、参拝所だ。 この日のメニュー。 魚のホイル焼き。 湯葉鍋。 椀もの。 そして、戸隠そば。 戸隠そばは、日本三大そばの一つだ。 ちゃんと「ぼっち盛り」で出された。 デザートは、フルーツ。 翌朝は、神事に参加する。 この部屋は照明が洋風で、和洋折衷なのが面白い。 神事は撮影OKだった。 たいがい撮影不可なので、これは珍しい。 神事が終わり、朝食会場のレストランへ。 メニューはこんな感じ。 食後はお土産コーナーを物色。 チェックアウトし、先に進んだ。 さすが重厚な建物だ。 それだけに、設備が古めかしいのはいたしかたない。 部屋にトイレがなかったのは、致命的なミスだった。 もっとよく確認すべきだった。 食事はとてもおいしく、ボリュームもちょうど良かった。 朝のお勤めも、気持ちがいい。 GOTOトラベルで格安で泊まれて、ラッキーだった。

This place is ~5mins walk from Zenkoji temple. neighborhood is peaceful at night. Shoes to be removed outside the accommodation. Rooms are on the 2nd floor so you'll have to carry your luggage up (there's no lift). Room (with window) is huge. You'll have to head downstairs to use the shared toilet and shared onsen (no toilet inside the room). We were only allowed 30mins of onsen time for 2 pax - couples weren't allowed to use the onsen concurrently so we had to go one after another (i'm not sure if the instructions got lost in translation..). Felt very rushed so i didnt really get to enjoy the onsen experience, but overall was nice and clean. Interesting 6.30am tour around the area and within the temple itself, followed by a simple vegetarian breakfast (porridge with omakase-styled sides with miso soup) back at the accommodation. The morning tour lasted from 6.30am - 8.30am. The accommodation provided a fleece blanket to each pax to bring to Zenkoji temple to keep us warm during the morning praying ceremony. We went on 30 Dec and it was SO COLD. Overall interesting experience but accommodation price is pretty steep IMO.

If you come to Nagano and want to try a ryokan then this place is well worth staying. It is located along a line of shops leading up to the Zenkoji Temple, you have to walk past the large angry wooden statues on your way there. We had Room 28 which had its own on-suite shower and toilet. There are stairs to get to this upper level and the room is found after a squeaky journey on wooden floorboards. The Ryokan is not cheap but a stay is worth the experience if you can afford it. The family that runs this Ryokan are wonderful people. They are always smiling and greeting you and seem genuinely interested in you. They do not speak a lot of English but I should have made more of an effort to learn some simple Japanese phrases. One thing I can recommend is to have at least one dinner meal from this Ryokan as it is exceptional. The lovely people bring out all the courses one after another and you are full at the end. You can order sake which was the clincher for me. We walked North from the Nagano Train Station and takes about ~25 minutes. There are buses and taxis but the walk was not too difficult. If you try walking there during the night time, it can be very dark after you walk past the wooden angry statues (the Ryokan has a lantern and is on the left side as you approach the temple). The Zenkoji Temple just along from the ryokan can be visited multiple times during your stay.
