My wife and I stayed at the Harbour House on the night of 31 August 2024. The night was quite cold, so we started a fire in the fireplace. After an hour or so, the room was filled with smoke and we had to evacuate the room. The staff member that came to our room to remove the burning embers, told us that there was a known issue with the fireplace in that room (but apparently not fixed). The smoke alarm did not work. A serious safety risk. The desk agent was able to place us in another room which she stated was not in the same class as the one we booked. The next morning, I spoke to Kevin Masson, the Host Manager. He also acknowledged that there was an issue with the fireplace in Unit #2, but he did not seem at all concerned about our safety. When asked about any compensation related to the smoke filled room, or being move to a tiny room in the other building, he stated that someone at the home office would contact us. No one has reached out to-date. I'm an international traveler, so perhaps I don't understand the local rules associated with fire safety, smoke detectors or how customer service works in South Africa, but this was an awful incident that other potential guests should be aware.

It is hard to imagine there could be a better place to stay in Hermanus. You have a secure, comfortable, quiet, well appointed guest house with the most amazing, helpful, friendly hosts. Nothing is too much trouble and Stephan and Nikki clearly take a pride in being helpful, knowledgeable and accessible at all times. The fact that they are local people themselves means that they will make sure you know the best restaurants to eat in, the best tours and whale watching trips, wineries and help with your onward plans. In terms of the house itself, the rooms are well furnished, roomy and comfortable- especially the beds. Great bathrooms, tea and coffee makings, strong wifi, TV and plenty of wardrobe space. You are just a 5 minute walk to the cliff top. Parking is secure and free and there is a swimming pool in the central courtyard. Breakfast is an event! Stephan is a chef and the breakfast is always varied and delicious. If this review sounds ‘gushy’ I make no apology. Our opinion is that you could not find a better place to stay when visiting Hermanus. Thank you Nikki and Stephan. We will be back. Martin and Sheila

Classic English hotel. This really is a 5 star destination. From beginning to end of our stay over it was great. The food was first class, the service and general help around the hotel was super professional It was a pleasure to stay here Kudos to management here, your staff and everything we encounter here are well run and a pleasure to be around

Our stay was absolutely beautiful . Ms Venessa and her husband gave us a warm welcome after a tiring day . The rooms were spacious and quite cosy . Ms Vanessa gave us the list to explore nearby the vicinity which I have not experienced such family treatment from any of our stays . The lodge has close proximity to whale watching places in Hermanus . Each corner of the lodge is so thoughtful and complete that we never had to trouble the owners for any of the necessary items . Words don’t express their hospitality towards us . We were just there for a day but wish we could have more days at this place . While going she also made me remember her by giving beautiful lavenders . They are so kind and generous .
