Driving up I-10 to Carlsbad and needed a cost-effective, pet friendly place to stay after a long day on the road. As far as those two factors go, the Red Roof Inn in Pecos met them. We thought it was hilarious that the website says children aren’t allowed, but dogs are. Each room has a street sign above it with a different dog breed, so initially, we and our pup thought we were in heaven. However, the room itself, and the property outside were more like hell. Upon getting our gear in the room and further inspection, our initial ‘this place is too good to be true for a red roof inn!’ thoughts were proven right. Whether they were dog hairs, ***** hairs, or mystery hairs, they were all over the bathroom shower, toilet, and floor. There were water/toothpaste stains on the mirror. Layers of dust on every surface including outlets and dispensers. Hand soap and shampoo dispensers were empty. It was clear the toilet and bathroom had not been cleaned in…maybe ever? I had to clean them myself just to feel semi-comfortable. I then did an inspection of the sheets and am pretty sure they weren’t cleaned and instead just ‘smoothed over’ by someone’s hand. The floor throughout the room definitely had not been cleaned, and had stains and debris all over it. There’s a fridge in the room and the top of it had 3 inches of dust. THEN there was the microwave - someone exploded some red-sauced food inside of it, and there was a layer of dried liquid on the microwave plate that no one bothered to look at or clean. Unacceptable.
As far as the outside of the building, there was trash and broken glass all over the perimeter, and the smoking bench was tipped over and broken in half with cigarette butts and empty packs strewn about. Broken glass isn’t exactly cool or convenient, considering they tout being a dog friendly motel.
I knew not to expect the Ritz, and I guess ‘you get what you pay for’ - but I’m giving an honest review of our experience. Just because they’re the red roof inn doesn’t mean they don’t have to provide basic cleanliness and housekeeping for their paying guests. I don’t understand how the Management and employees can walk around their workplace and seemingly not lift a finger to make it better. If you’re at all worried about cleanliness, spend a few dollars more and find a best western plus or holiday inn.
