Let me start by saying Pelican by the Sea is a throw back to old Florida. I'm talking about the atmosphere, not the condition of the hotel, though it is an older facility. Your first impression will come from Sam the owner/manager, desk clerk, maintenance man, housekeeping extraordinaire. I stayed on the first floor in a sizeable room with a full working kitchen (think small apartment size appliances) and all the amenities to go along with it. The bathroom has been modernized, replacing the bathtub with a huge shower area. There are no room keys, locks are electronic with your personal code. Parking is a few feet in front of your door. Beach is around the corner and Sam is also the beach chair guy. Just ask him for a chair when you go. Outside the room is a table and chairs, if you want morning coffee in the sun. The pool is steps from your door, crystal clear and unusual for Florida, heated. The pool area also has seating, a bbq and a covered area for shade for those late afternoon showers. The only things I wish were there would be a bathroom counter (there was a pedestal sink) and a full length mirror. Otherwise the room is spacious and comfortable. I was traveling alone so the fact that there was one cushion chair in the room wasn't an issue for me. It was a quick drive to the food store for supplies. Sam was great keeping me informed on the late season hurricane Nicole and its progress. He lives 9 minutes away so he was watching for the hotel and his house. Sam not being on site 24/7 is not an issue as he gives you his cell number.
