My wife and I have just returned after a great seventh holiday at the Dolphin where we met up with old friends and made new ones. On the whole we enjoyed our stay with just a couple of blips. There was a corporate event one day and the music was very loud and no thought given to people staying at the hotel but it was finished by late afternoon. We don't bother with the animation team except me playing a bit of pool volleyball but they are a friendly bunch who will have a chat or even have a meal at the restaurant with you in between keeping you entertained and work very hard. Speaking of the restaurant, most of the time everything was fine. The food was sometimes just warm but always very tasty and a large choice. For carbs you had rice, pasta, potato, and noodles. For mains there was a variety of curries (both meat and vegetarian) then something like a beef stew or chilli ( needs to be spicier chef ) spag bol and other western type dishes. Then you had the live cooking stations doing Mongolian food one night plus fish and other dishes. Also sides like samosas, pakoras, chutneys, poppadoms, bread etc. Plus soup and a salad bar for starters and the delicious desserts. Spoilt for choice in our view. We mostly ate at snacks and nibbles for lunch and except for one day it was fine for a burger or ceaser salad and the like. There is only one waiter serving here so do them a favour and go to the pool bar and get your own drinks to help them out if they are busy. Bar staff great as usual (thanks lads) Evening entertainment goes from quite good to not very good but it sometimes depends on the guests. Some nights loads dancing and giving the evening a good vibe, other times it was time for an early night. As a repeater we have seen some of the more experienced staff leave for pastures new but before you blame anyone for this remember Sri Lanka has gone through some very hard times over the last few years and many have left for the cruise ships or to Europe for better paid jobs, so no different to the Brits working in Germany or Saudi during the 70s and 80s. My wife needed a doctor for an infected insect bite and his visit was organised by the hotel quickly and the staff could not have been more helpful and all asked after her including the manager. The dogs and cats are friendly and do get fed by the hotel but they do like a treat so stick a packet or two of nibbles in your case. We didn't do and trips this time but have always used Nipun in the past but all the lads on the beach are recommended by various repeat guests. We will be back.
