Glen Orchy House

We stayed in room 11 upstairs in June 2024. The room was very small, with a low ceiling under the dormer. The double bed was small with a tiny duvet that barely covered the bed. They had maybe run out of clean sheets as instead of a bottom fitted sheet on the mattress they had used a valance sheet which didn't stay on. The mattress was hard foam, not sprung, which I found hard to sleep on. The bedside lights had odd lightbulbs, one was too adark and one ws too bright. There was one large window in the room with good views but it quickly steamed up as there was a lack of ventilation in the room. The window opened fully into the room with no way to lock it at a certain position to stop it blowing open or stop the rain coming in. The bathroom had a bath with a shower hose attached to the taps which worked surprising well, although it leaked a bit. There was no fan in the bathroom so again no ventilation. The bathroom was also dark. Breakfast was very good. Dinner at the asian restaurant on site was excellent. The staff were very friendly.

This is the worst hotel I have stayed at in 25 years or more. The room was too small for the full sized bed. You had to walk sideways to move around 90% of the room. The room always smelled like the Thai restaurant on the ground floor. The bed did not come with a top sheet only a comforter. The mattress should have been replaced at least 5 years ago. My wife and I were basically sleeping on an uneven box spring that caused bruising from chronic pressure over 3 nights. The plumbing was installed by a six year old. The shower would stop hot water at a whim. Plus, ALL the water out of the shower would stop for 4 to 5 mins repeatedly. This hotel should be closed by the tourism department of Shetland.

The hotel rooms, especially the communal lounges, appear not to have been aired for months. Everywhere is stale and dank and dusty and unhygienic. Opening the bedroom window meant we could breathe more easily but each breath seemed to transfer mounds of dust from the mattress to our lungs. We survived one night but - despite the convenient location and delightful views -we will not return.

Clearly trading on past reputation of previous owners. Old AA 4* sign up in reception (2017) but not listed as AA rated on AA website. Lounge has a number of seats in a circle. Room dingy, bed poorly made (valance used as a sheet on the mattress), towels thin and pillows lumpy. Room numbering/direction arrows confusing as signage suggests that some rooms could be on two floors. Notices in bedroom/bathroom in name of previous owner. Window covered in condensation in morning so window vent must be blocked. Could not open window to tilt, so could not have window open overnight. No effective ventilation from bathroom. Breakfast poor. Black pudding very thin, bacon leathery, toast sparse.

Our flight was cancelled due to fog, Logan air managed to book us in here for the night, arrived at 10.30pm and were greeted by the host (a Thai woman), we asked if there was any chance of food-expecting a sandwich and the host replied that she would deliver 2 chicken satays and 2 beers to the room. She absolutely went above and beyond for us and we were truly grateful. Comfortable bed and decent shower in the room. We had to leave again at 6am so we never got to try the breakfast. Would 100% stay here in future.

Stayed at Glen Orchy for 4 days for the Shetland folk festival. Was a bit apprehensive after reading some of the reviews but was really very pleased with our choice after arrival. The hotel was clean and comfortable, the breakfast was the best we’ve had and the food in the restaurant was excellent. They were a bit short staffed but the amazing Brad coped superbly with everything in a lovely friendly way, never met anyone who worked so hard to make our stay enjoyable. Thank you so much. We will be back!

This is probably the worst place I’ve ever stayed. I arrived to be ‘greeted’ by the very grumpy and unfriendly Thai owner who really couldn’t have cared less. The room was up numerous stairs (I had a lot of luggage) and was lack lustre, in desperate need of re-decorating and some decent furnishings. The towels were thread bare, the duvet too small for the bed, the pillows were smelly and bed linen only fit for recycling. I couldn’t face breakfast as the breakfast room smelt musty and grubby and was in desperate need of a deep clean. I do not recommend this establishment and couldn’t wait to leave.

Booked a last minute room for the lowest price in Lerwick (by quite a margin) and was very satisfied. Great location in a quiet residential area, just 10 minutes walk from the town centre. Staff were lovely and very helpful. My room was basic but clean and everything worked. Bed was comfortable and there was plenty of storage space and tea/ coffee provided. Definitely a solid budget option and I'd certainly stay again.

We had an amazing stay at Glen Orchy abd we will diffently stay again, rooms are lovely and plenty of room. Breakfast was the best abd scrambled egg was the best I’ve ever had, lots of fresh fruit and yogurt and plenty of choice. The general manager Brad is really lovely and helpful and deserves a pay-rise as he works so hard and is so polite and helpful and smiling… Thank you for being you And all your staff we will see you again very soon….
