Il Ryokan ha superato ogni aspettativa ed è stata una bellissima esperienza! Situato nel centro di Shibu Onsen ti fa vivere una vera esperienza giapponese cominciando lasciando le scarpe all'entrata e fornendoti tutto il necesario per goderti al meglio le Onsen. La stanza e tutta la struttura sono in vero stile Giapponese, avevamo anche una betulla che attraversava la camera! Avevo qualche remora sul wc in comune, ma sono pulitissimi e non mi sono assolutamente sentita a disagio. La proprietaria e tutto lo staff sono sempre stati gentilissimi e disponibili e ci hanno addirittura portato gli zaini alla stazione di Yudanaka così da ritrovarli direttamente lì dopo la visita dello snow monkeys park a cui ci hanno accompagnato personalmente. Non potevo mangiare pesce e sono stati così gentili da preparare pasti appositi per me. Ogni pasto è stato davvero delizioso, in ogni portata, e abbiamo avuto il privilegio di poter cenare e fare colazione da soli in una stanza tutta nostra, davvero fantastico. Ciliegina sulla torta, è possibile riservare una delle due onsen private della struttura solo per per 50 minuti e gratuitamente. Lo consiglierei a chiunque, è stato davvero un peccato non poterci fermare più a lungo. Grazie alla proprietaria e a tutto lo staff per l'esperienza che ci hanno fatto vivere!

From the moment you enter Kokuya Ryokan, be prepared to leave the real world behind and fully immerse yourself in the experience. You swap your shoes for slippers at the door and don’t see them again until you leave. You will receive a warm welcome from polite and gentle-mannered staff, get taken up to your beautiful room, and once you’ve changed into your traditional yukata, it’s time to let the relaxation begin. The multi-course dinner will probably be one of the best meals you’ve had in your life, with many unusual textures and flavors to try. The futons are comfortable, and your room is kept toasty warm. There are even skincare products to keep you pampered and moisturized between soaks in the onsen. Honestly, you won’t even need to open your suitcase while you’re there. The staff will take you through all the logistics when you arrive, but there are some things that might be useful to know in advance. - The ryokan sends a shuttle to Yudanaka station at about 15:00 to collect new arrivals, so time your journey to take advantage of this benefit. - The ryokan also offers guests the opportunity to catch a shuttle to the Snow Monkey Park immediately after breakfast the next morning. - After you leave the ryokan, they will take your luggage down to the coffee shop opposite the station, so you don’t need to worry about those logistics. - Trains from Yudanaka back to Nagano leave at 12:30 and 15:30. - The ryokan itself has several private onsens that you can reserve for a 45-minute slot. Because the onsens are on the property, you can go in with your partner or travel companions regardless of gender. It’s a boutique hotel, so you don’t have to worry about not getting access to all the onsens you want. - The ryokan is on the main road of the Shibu Onsen town. The hotel will give you a key so you can wonder down the main road, visiting any of the public onsens you wish - however, with so many gorgeous and more private onsens in the hotel itself, you probably won’t have time or the desire for this. - Also, there is a coffee machine in the room! (I was worried about having to survive without coffee, and this turned out to be an unfounded concern). We had an incredible and totally indulgent time at Kokuya. Experiencing a traditional ryokan is a privilege that you should try at least once if you can. And adding the Snow Monkeys in give the trip a double purpose, making it that much more memorable. The only thing that would have made the trip better is if we had been allowed to linger longer over every course of our dinner.

If you plan to ski in Shiga Kogen and you’re wondering where to stay, you have to answer a first basic question: do you stay in a contemporary hotel up on the slopes, or down in the valley in a traditional Japanese ryokan with an onsen fed by natural hot springs? This review is a recommendation to go for the ryokan experience, and specifically for the Shibu Hotel in the village of Yudanaka. To understand the Shibu’s charms I’m prefacing my comments with what I think is important context and useful info. Shiga Kogen is a vast ski area of 18 interlinked resorts. The resorts are located on the slopes of the mountains at about 1400 meters (4600 ft). Many appear to have been built in the 1990s for the Nagano olympics. Many of them are ski in/out. We did not visit any of them, but as best we could tell there are few if any restaurants, bars or convenience stores that aren’t located inside a hotel. These are resorts. The resort experience is probably great. There are so many lifts and gondolas that we literally did not have to wait in line once. There are so many trails that we never felt crowded. There were even times we had an entire piste to ourselves from the summit at 2000 meters to the gondola station below. In five days skiing we managed to explore a fraction of the Shiga area. It’s fabulous. If all you want to do is shred, ski out at 8:30 and ski back in at 4:30, this is the place to do it. You can ski till you drop. But if you also want a bit of the Japanese cultural experience, you should stay in Yudanaka, an ancient little village built around the Shibu Onsen hot baths whose history goes back more than a thousand years to when it was the place for a bath and a rest for pilgrims on their way to the Zenkoji Temple. Yudanaka is the last stop on the Nagano Dentetsu electric rail line. The main village lane is a charming narrow street cobbled with small pavers and lined by traditional wooden ryokan and small stores (one converted to a free public table tennis hall), interspersed by skinny alleys that lead up the hillside to who knows where. There are also little restaurants -typically seating no more than a dozen people- next to shrines, old carved-stone, spring-fed foot baths and, of course, the onsen. There are nine onsen in Yudanaka. Each taps a different hot spring in the mountains above - each is said to deliver water with slightly different mineral properties, to treat different types of ailments. Some people buy a commemorative junyoku on which to collect a stamp from each onsen. All guests staying in the member-ryokans are welcome to use the onsen for free (non guests pay a small fee). So foreigners and Japanese both walk the village lane, wearing their yukata and geta, more about which later. These nine public onsen are maintained by a group of village ryokan owners. We stayed here at the end of our time in Japan as a treat and for the traditional Japanese inn / onsen experience and we certainly weren’t disappointed. The room was huge and the seating area was seamlessly converted for sleeping by the hotel staff while we ate our dinner. The food was traditional Japanese with seemingly endless small plates of delicacies (a similar story at breakfast). The onsen was fabulous - we used it 3 times in the one night we were there and loved it. All in all a great experience and lovely place to stay.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Minshuku Miyama. The bus stops right in front (bus stop S10 Kutsunomimyo). The owners are extremely welcoming, eventhough they don't speak any English. You can book in for dinner if you want (traditional dinner for 2200 yen p/p, which is a absolute delight and highly recommend). Japanese breakfast is included in price. The onsen is spacious and therapeutic after a long day hiking. Traditional spacious Japanese room. The owner drove us and others to station, when we left. Highly recommend staying here.

This Ryokan is located in a traditional Onsen village, with a nice, peaceful & old quaint atmosphere. There are many ( think it's 9) public onsens in the area which guests can also use, besides the inhouse one. Room is typical ryokan with tatami bed & inroom bath. Place is very clean. Service is par excellence! Very warm & friendly staff ( few speak English) all round makes you feel welcome. Staff will set up your bed( tatami) while one have their dinner. Traditional set Breakfast & Dinner (included) are very good quality, very traditional & excellent . Great inhouse onsen. Hotel can pick/send guests from/to train station ( from 1.30pm onwards only) . Also one way to Monkey Park. Easy bus access on main road. Only negative thing is this Ryokan is located at the end of a long uphill walk along the onsen village ( tough dragging heavy luggages or even just walking back). We arrive around 11am, so they can't pick us from train station. Took a bus & walk up & waited. Thankfully the nice lady ( think she is the owner) came to open door earlier to put our luggages. But no big issue. Lots of shops were not opened but some opened later in evening. Great experience not to be missed.

The temperament is very good👌👍! I visited this ”hot spring street” and indeed the price of this ”ape” youth hostel is the most affordable! Attached are the photos taken. It's less than 1,000 Taiwan dollars per person per night! This kind of hot spring hotel is really cheap!

This is a very small town and although we’ve seen many foreigners visiting this town and this hotel on Youtube (one of the reasons we decided to stay here), it is very foreigner ‘unfriendly’ to say the least. It seemed hotel staff only spoke Japanese, so if you don’t speak it, it will be very difficult to enjoy the amenities. Staff were nice, but not very flexible (strictly by the rules, we supposed) thus not as accommodating as other ryokans we’ve stayed in. Dinner was very nicely presented and tasty…so many dishes that we couldn’t finish all (& we are big eaters) …felt bad leaving food untouched :(. The 9 Onsen tour was on my Bucket List and we got that done in less than an hour not by choice but because the water was soooooooo hot that we couldn’t even stick our feet in…almost scorched the bottom of my feet from. Very disappointing :(.

The room was extremely spacious and kept us warm even at -10° outside thanks to extra heaters and cozy futons provided. Our private outdoor onsen was very warm and could be used even during coldest times (you can easily add cooler water if you feel like it is too hot). Lunch and dinner consisted of many many small plates continuously served and prepared with great care, which we enjoyed a lot (even if you don't enjoy every single dish served, you will have enough food). The couple running the ryokan helped us with small requests and was very attentive. Location in the middle of Shibu Onsen is perfect for visiting the Onsens, and it's easy to find transportation to the Snow Monkey Park and Ski resorts. Overall, we've had a great experience, and we were very positively surprised, especially given that our stay was booked last-minute and not very expensive.
