Mailing Cards from the Penguin Post Office 🐧

#christmastrip Port Lockroy sits on a small island near the western edge of the Antarctic Peninsula. It is home to thousands of gentoo penguins, and also happens to be the site of the world’s most southerly post office. For this reason, it is affectionately known as the “Penguin Post Office.” 🐧 The UK Antarctic Heritage Trust sends thousands of postcards from Antarctica to the rest of the world every year (via UK Royal Mail). We got to visit Port Lockroy on our Antarctic expedition and took the chance to mail penguin Christmas cards home to our loved ones! 🎁 How to get there: 🐧 Most passengers arrive by expedition cruise vessel. Look for ships departing from Ushuaia, Argentina. 🐧 Book an expedition vessel with no more than 200 passengers to allow for more time ashore. (Check out IAATO regulations when making your choice.) 🐧 Let your expedition leader know you hope to mail cards from the penguin post! Day of: 🎁 Pre-write your cards aboard the ship. You’ll only have 30 minutes on land here, and will want to spend your time shopping and snapping photos of penguins. 🎁 Prepare exact change for postage.
