Aurland, Westland County, Norway

#tripcom5th anniversary Aurland is a municipality in Westland County, Norway. Before the merger on January 1, 2020, it belonged to Sognen-Filajunne County. It is located on the south side of the Sognefjord in the Sognen traditional area. The administrative center is the village of Aurlandsvangen (Fig. 1-4), and other villages include Baka (Fig. 5), Flåm (Fig. 6), Wenledal (Fig. 7) and Gudvangen (Fig. 8 ). The earliest inhabitants lived by hunting and fishing until about 2,000 years ago, when they gradually began farming. Agriculture remains important because of the fertile valley floors and abundant mountain pastures. Tourism entered the community as early as the mid-19th century in the form of fishing and hunting. Visitors from the UK predominated during this time and one can still find English names for hilltops, hunting lodges and fishing holes. Later, another type of tourist came to the area. These tourists come to enjoy the natural beauty of the area. These tourists create employment demand in the form of transportation and accommodation. There were three or four ships anchored in the Nærøyfjord at one time, which required a large number of horse-drawn carriages to take tourists to the Stollheim Hotel, just across the border from the city of Voss in the southwest.
