The charm of medieval sculptures.

The National Art Museum of Catalonia was built in 1926 and was originally the Spanish Pavilion for the 1929 Barcelona World Expo, known as the National Palace. This large neoclassical Baroque-style building has four towers and a central dome. In 1934, the museum moved into the National Palace. The museum's Romanesque and Gothic art rooms display sculptures from the Catalonia region, mainly with religious themes from the Middle Ages, which are also very interesting. If you look closely, you will find that these works are not rigid, but rather, in the quiet and tranquility, you can touch the pulse of personality, which is not ostentatious, but ordinary and distant. For example, Figure 6 - Jesus in agony. His slightly closed eyelids, is it because he can't close his eyes because he can't let go of the redeemed? His slightly closed lips, is there any admonition that has not been explained? According to the introduction, this head of Jesus Christ was created by Jaume Cascalls, a versatile artist from Catalonia in the mid-14th century. This work has been colored, and now you can see that the beard, the crown of thorns on the top of the head, and the sweat and blood flowing from the forehead to the cheeks are all dark, contrasting with the pale and clear face. And when you face it, how can you be indifferent. Another example is Figure 7 - Saint Sebastian (Saint Sebastian). He was originally the captain of the ancient Roman Forbidden Army, a devout Christian, and traditionally believed to have died on January 20, 287 AD. He was ordered by the Roman Emperor Diocletian, who persecuted Christians, to be shot to death by random arrows. Miraculously, he was not dead after being shot through the heart by random arrows. Diocletian then ordered him to be beaten to death with a random stick. He was later canonized by Christianity (Catholicism), and January 20 each year is St. Sebastian's Day. He is also the most popular object in Western art such as painting and sculpture since ancient times. His suffering is an enduring artistic creation theme. It is said that he is handsome and young, and he was only in his thirties when he died. Therefore, many works strive to show his strong body and the shock and magnificence brought to people by the pain and destruction of the sharp arrow piercing the body. However, this St. Sebastian in the Catalonia region is slightly fat and not very handsome, just like the little brother you can meet everywhere - the saint is among the mortals. It has a power to travel through time and space. The National Art Museum of Catalonia allows me to fully appreciate the charm of medieval art.
