People's Park: The People's Park - The Taste of Chengdu (Part 1)

🌳People's Park is also known as Shaocheng Park by the locals. It is one of the earliest parks in Chengdu and even in China. 🌳In 1911, the Qing Dynasty was on the verge of collapse, and the Manchu people in Chengdu, who had lost their rice supply, were living in poverty. Therefore, General Yu Kun of Chengdu opened up more than 50 mu of land on Citang Street in the south corner of Shaocheng, planted flowers and trees, and built a park, which was open to the public for a fee. He also allowed the Manchu people to open businesses in the park to make a living. 🌳Since 1718, when Nian Gengyao built the Manchu City on the basis of Shaocheng in Chengdu, the city within a city, which blocked the progress of the Manchu and Han people, was finally opened. The following year, the walls of the Manchu City were demolished, and the feudal shackles that had bound Chengdu for 200 years collapsed. 🌳It is a symbol and a flag. For 40 years, Shaocheng Park has always been a symbol of the spirit of freedom and democracy. In 1914, the "Monument to the Martyrs of the Railway Protection Movement" was erected in the park. In 1919, during the May Fourth Movement, students gathered at "Zhenliu" and progressive teachers discussed at "Heming". During the War of Resistance against Japan, many fundraising rallies were held here, so much so that the Japanese army bombed the park twice on September 27, 1940, and July 27, 1941, killing thousands of people... 🌳In 1949, Shaocheng Park was renamed People's Park. In 2004, the park stopped charging admission fees. In 2010, the walls were demolished, and People's Park was truly given to the people.
