Journey to Datong

From Pingyao, head north all the way to Datong. My impression of Datong has always been associated with coal and remoteness. After touring Datong, there were several unexpected revelations: I didn't expect Datong to be so accessible today; I didn't expect Datong to be so quaint, atmospheric yet modern, with clean and tidy streets, without a trace of coal dust; I didn't expect the Yungang Grottoes to be so spectacular and exquisitely preserved; I didn't expect the cuisine of Datong to be so refined and delicious, overturning my perception of northern Chinese cuisine, with Kai Ge Restaurant being recommendable for its tasty and affordable offerings that make earning money seem not so easy; and the ancient city of Datong, the museum, the Hanging Temple, Mount Heng, and the Wooden Pagoda of Ying County are all stunning and breathtaking!
