Fremantle Markets

Frenmantle lies on a series of limestone hills known by the traditional owners as Booyeembara and is located at the mouth of the Swan River. When the city was settled by Europeans in 1829, its buildings took shape from the surrounding landscape. Frenamtle’s colonial-era buildings were mainly built from the locally sourced limestone. Nature met architecture with the typical Edwardian style of the period, including decorative 19th-century facades. Built in 1897, Fremantle Markets is one of the port city’s most significant landmarks. Housed in an historic, grand Victorian heritage-listed building, its unique bohemian atmosphere has made it the best and most well known market in WA. This building is one of only two surviving municipal market buildings in WA, and one of the few in Australia that continues to be used for its original purpose. The abandoned Fremantle Markets building were reopened in 1975.
