British Overseas Territory of Gibraltar

Gibraltar is a British overseas territory and city located at the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula. It covers an area of ​​6.7 square kilometers, has a maximum altitude of 426 meters, and borders Spain to the north. The landscape is dominated by the Rock of Gibraltar, at its feet is a densely populated town area home to more than 32,000 people, mainly Gibraltarians. In 1704, during the War of Spanish Succession, the Anglo-Dutch forces captured Gibraltar from Spain. By the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713, the territory was permanently ceded to Britain. It became an important base for the Royal Navy, particularly during the Napoleonic Wars and World War II, as it controlled the narrow entrance and exit to the Mediterranean, the Strait of Gibraltar, which is only 14.3 kilometers wide. This chokepoint remains of strategic importance, with half of the world's maritime trade passing through it. In the era before missiles appeared, the fortress of Gibraltar was almost invincible. Unless the defenders were defeated on land, it would be impossible to enter and exit the Mediterranean from the Atlantic Ocean. Because all the big guns guarding the Strait of Gibraltar are deployed in rock tunnels in the mountains, all the big guns on warships crossing the Mediterranean cannot shoot so high, so there is no other way but to be beaten. Gibraltar Airport may be the only airport in the world that shares its runway with urban roads.
