Seamlessly integrated

The Itsukushima Shrine on Miyajima Island in Japan enshrines the three Munakata goddesses: Ichikishimahime, Tagorihime, and Tagitsuhime. The Munakata goddesses are revered as the guardians of the sea, maritime safety, good fortune, and the fulfillment of wishes. The shrine is renowned for its unique architectural beauty, with palace-style buildings showcasing exquisite craftsmanship. Originally built in 593, it was later reconstructed in 1168 by the then-powerful Taira no Kiyomori and has been preserved to this day. The unique configuration protruding into the sea, contrasted with the beautiful mountains in the background, reflects Kiyomori's ambition and power. Centered around the main shrine (honden), several other shrines are arranged around it, including a Noh stage, music hall, and various pavilions. These buildings are connected by a 300-meter-long corridor, seamlessly integrated. The bright red color of the shrine and the grand torii gate is said to ward off evil spirits. The buildings are also coated with vermilion lacquer for preservation.
