Nianbadu Ancient Town Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in Jun)
I thought Shaoxing was beautiful enough, until I came to Quzhou
in Zhejiang, where ancient water towns are clustered.
I thought Shaoxing was beautiful enough, until I came to Quzhou... in Zhejiang, where ancient water towns are clustered.
Finding a place that is less crowded, quiet, and offers a different experience is really not easy!!
I just went to Quzhou·Jiangshan the other day
I visited a very niche millennium-old town, which is not like the traditional water towns of the south of the Yangtze River. The ancient town is located at the junction of Zhejiang, Fujian, and Jiangxi provinces, and it integrates the architectural styles of the three provinces. There are many delicious and fun things to do, but not many people! It's very suitable for a weekend self-driving tour~
The ancient town is not big, but it has a lot of history, giving people a very quiet and simple feeling. Climbing up to Chenggong Pavilion, you can overlook the entire ancient town~ Inside, there are also Wenchang Pavilion, Dialect Surname Celebrity Hall, Echo Wall, Guandi Temple, and Gujing Bridge... suitable for a leisurely stroll and check-in.

🌈 Jiangshan Jianglang Mountain
The 'less popular' 5A scenic spot can be reached by sightseeing bus. Entrance is free from Monday to Friday, and there is a charge on weekends.
🌸 Twenty-Eight Towns Ancient Town
The ancient town, with a history of a thousand years, has every brick and tile imprinted with its glorious story in time.
☀️ Fugaishan Rafting (Open in summer)
Fugaishan Rafting, known as 'rafting across three provinces', offers both thrilling and leisurely rafting experiences.
☁️ Xianxia Pass
One of China's four ancient passes, Xianxia Pass has beautiful scenery and ancient trails winding through the mountains.
💧 Jiangshan Fun
There are many mosquitoes in the mountains, so remember to bring mosquito repellent spray.
The food in Quzhou is not all spicy, suitable for children's taste, and there are many local specialties. Quzhou duck head is worth a try.
🌈 Grandma's Private Kitchen
The shredded radish beef and braised large intestine are really amazing. I just love to heap the shredded radish beef on my rice!
💧 Jiangshan Xishan Food City
I forgot the name, but in the food city, go to the first floor, on the left side towards the middle.
🌟 Home Stir-Fry Restaurant! I rush there every year when I return. The fish, bullfrog, and beef pot are delicious, and the best is the shredded potato! But it's too much trouble to cut, so when it's busy, the lady boss always refuses me.
🌙 Momo Stir-Fry
This place probably doesn't need my introduction, many people say it's delicious. The shop is not big, so you need to make a reservation in advance, and expect to wait during meal times!
✨ Xianhong Stall
The most classic dish is the sauerkraut fish! The fish is freshly killed at the market and cooked immediately in the shop! Just don't expect it to be too fresh or too tender.
This is probably the most underrated niche travel destination in Zhejiang

Compared to Wuzhen, I prefer this lesser-known ancient town around Hangzhou
Now in March and April,
it's the perfect time to travel to the south of the Yangtze River🍵
With misty rain and a clear spring scene, tired of the hustle and bustle of the city,
why not find a quiet ancient town to stroll around?~
-
To avoid the crowds, I want to recommend these 8⃣ lesser-known and tranquil ancient towns around Hangzhou~
-
🍃Jiaxing·Puyuan Ancient Town
Right next to Wuzhen, it's lesser-known and not crowded. Sitting in a rowing boat, slowly experiencing the Jiangnan time in an ink painting.

With mountains and water, there are also snacks and old buildings from Zhejiang, Fujian, and Jiangxi provinces, simple and distinctive.

Hidden in the bamboo sea terraces, the secluded ancient village | Ruoshan Village
| Ruoshan Village.
Ruoshan Village,
A secluded ancient village surrounded by bamboo seas and terraced fields
The village is all rammed earth houses,
The Xipo Homestay is located here,
Adhering to the Xipo's site selection principle—taking from nature.
This time I encountered a rainy day, I thought the experience would be diminished, but it turned out to be a different flavor, a pleasant surprise!
The mountain is shrouded in water vapor, with clouds and mist,
Waterfalls, streams, small bridges, greenery covering the sky, I saw the most real portrayal of a fairyland on earth. The shutter never stopped.
The place is not big,
In summer, come here to play in the water, breathe oxygen, and lie down to watch the rice fields; in spring, come to see the rapeseed flower terraces; in autumn, watch the golden rice; in winter, admire the deep mountain snow scenery, it must be great!
Fragments of Tenderness from Xipo's Landscape.
After the rain, nature mingles with the scent of the earth, and the lush green moss seems to be concocting a springtime exclusive. Adornments of bright yellow osmanthus and a backdrop of time-worn mottled walls are visible, with the shadows of trees frolicking in the wind and sunlight. The late spring and early summer of Xipo's landscape evoke a warmth and anticipation in one's heart. The woods are wrapped in the sight of sprouting greenery, and each visit to Xipo turns one unconsciously into a 'plant growth observer': heart-shaped grass, large stones covered with moss beside the stream...
Distant mountains with rising smoke, dogs and the wilderness, days in the woods seem to forget time. The palpitations of the heart cannot be hidden, and through the courtyard's skylight, one looks up to a brilliant starry sky. If you also like to tread on the shattered starlight accompanied by the moon, then you must come to Xipo, sink into the soft grass, and wander through tenderness and the distance.
Above the terraced fields, below the clouds, Xipo's landscape is a place that never tires, no matter how many times one visits. The natural revelry, the cycle of life, and the earth's praise are all answers to life that time bestows upon us. In the ordinary days of daily meals, you understand nature, and nature understands you more. Xipo, this home, has many more beautiful places worth your joy.
Off-the-Beaten-Path Getaways in Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Shanghai | Xipo Jiangshan
Xipo Jiangshan. Escape the hustle and bustle of the city and embark on a spontaneous trip with friends this spring. It's about a 3-4 hour drive from Hangzhou or Shanghai to reach Xipo Jiangshan Resort B&B.
Photo credit - mia, thank you!
Spring has arrived at Xipo
Escape the city for a short while and find the openness and tranquility in your heart amidst the mountains. In the clusters of quiet woods, the sound of pine trees is gentle, the rice fields are vast, birds chirp flying through the valley to the branches, and as you descend the steps, you enter a dwelling surrounded by the mountain forest.
Xipo's rivers and mountains are the imagined mountain cabin you can find, one side with rammed earth yellow walls returning to the simplicity of nature, the other side with the deep and clear beauty of layers of dyed forest.

Checked in at Fugai Mountain
The scenery in Jiangshan City, Zhejiang Province is truly beautiful. As the car travels on the highway, mountain peaks rise one after another on both sides of the road, with clouds and mist swirling around the summits. The car shuttles through a group of tunnels, creating a picturesque scene. Fugai Mountain has a Lotus Cave, which is very narrow and steep. I didn't manage to take photos at the thrilling spots because I was afraid of dropping my phone. The dad, who prefers the road less traveled, encourages the kids to go on adventures.
The caves in this valley are almost vertical, and it feels almost like drilling straight up to the top of the mountain from its belly. Those with claustrophobia and poor coordination should probably not participate, haha.
Fugai Mountain is located along the Xianxia Ancient Trail and has a profound historical background. It boasts both the ingenious works of nature and the ancient people's conquest of natural barriers.

Xianxia Pass
Xianxia Pass, formerly known as Guquan Mountain, Quanling Mountain, and Baoquan Mountain, is an ancient Chinese pass. The ancients called it 'the lock and key of both Zhejiang provinces, the throat of entering Fujian,' and it has always been a place of strategic military importance, ranking alongside Jianmen Pass, Hangu Pass, and Yanmen Pass as one of the four great ancient passes of China.
Xianxia Pass is located to the southwest of Bao'an Township, Jiangshan City, Zhejiang Province, at the junction of the three provinces of Fujian, Zhejiang, and Jiangxi, and has historically been a critical juncture for traffic between Zhejiang and Fujian. During the fifth year of the Qianfu era of the Tang Dynasty, the rebel army of Huang Chao advanced into Fujian, cutting a path 700 li straight to Jianzhou, thus creating a strategic route. The area around the route is surrounded by high mountains and deep valleys within a hundred li, with treacherous terrain that is easy to defend and difficult to attack.
During the Shaoxing years of the Southern Song Dynasty, Shi Hao recruited people to build a stone-paved road along the path.
The pass began to be built during the Qiandao era. Although roads were built along the mountains during the Tang and Song dynasties, no defensive facilities were constructed.
During the Ming and Qing dynasties, there were frequent wars in this area, and the strategic importance of the route became increasingly apparent. The defenders then built passes and checkpoints at Anmin, Erdu, Mucheng, Huangwo, Liushi, and other places near Xianxia Ridge, within a radius of nearly a hundred li, collectively known as the Six Passes with Xianxia. Each location had two gateways, all constructed of strip stones with arched tops. The gate of Xianxia Pass is 3.2 meters high and 2.4 meters wide, built against the mountain with 5-meter-thick walls on both sides. On the left side, there is a plaque of Xianxia Pass, and on the right side stands a stele that records the history of the ridge pass, making it the most dangerous pass among the Six Passes. At the end of the Ming and the beginning of the Qing dynasty, Zhu Yujian, the Prince of Tang, proclaimed himself emperor in Fuzhou, intending to use the strategic location of Xianxia to resist the Qing troops. However, due to the secret surrender of the Ming general Zheng Zhilong to the Qing, the Qing army entered Fujian through Zhejiang and overthrew the Southern Ming Longwu regime.
Xianxia Pass is one of the four great ancient passes in China
Xianxia Pass, where the light of swords and shadows of blades travel the ancient path.
China has four great ancient passes: Jianmen Pass, Hangu Pass, Yanmen Pass, and Xianxia Pass.
Xianxia Pass is located on the ancient Xianxia trail. At the end of the Tang Dynasty, the army led by Huang Chao entered Fujian from Zhejiang, carving out this mountain-crossing and ridge-traversing route that stretches over 300 li from Jiangshan in Zhejiang to Pucheng in Fujian.
Thereafter, it became an important land transportation route for the maritime Silk Road.
Silks, porcelains, and teas produced in Zhejiang, Fujian, and Jiangxi were transported through the ancient Xianxia trail to the southeastern coastal ports. This place also served as a vital traffic route between Zhejiang and Fujian, known as the 'throat of Zhejiang and Fujian'.
Xianxia Pass is built at the narrow pass between two steep mountains, with two stone gates in the middle of the perilous pass. In the event of an enemy attack, once the stone gates were sealed, it would be impossible to pass, embodying the saying 'One man guards the pass, ten thousand are unable to open it'.
The entire Xianxia Ridge still has four gates today, from north to south: the first, second, third, and fourth gates, with a distance of 1500 meters between them. The ancient path between the first and second gates is the steepest, and the distance between the second and third gates is only about a hundred meters.
The first gate is Xianxia Pass, which is 40 meters long, 7 meters high, and 5 meters thick, with gate doors 3.6 meters high and 2.6 meters wide. The walls of the pass are entirely built with rough and strip stones.

Jianglang Mountain Scenic Area Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in Jun)
Experience the ancient charm of a thousand years, and visit the low-key sacred land of Southern Confucianism, Quzhou
In the many cities of Zhejiang, Quzhou is a rather low-key place. However, in reality, it is an out-and-out historical and cultural city, with a history of over 1,800 years of city establishment!
Quzhou is located to the west of Zhejiang, and due to its special geographical position as 'the thoroughfare to four provinces and the head of five routes,' it is also one of the centers for the spread of Confucian culture in the south of the Yangtze River, earning the reputation of 'the sacred land of Southern Confucianism.' Quzhou still retains well-preserved ancient state-level city structures such as the Quzhou Prefecture City and ancient city walls, which are worth spending half a day wandering and exploring!
👍Most recommended:
The essence of scenic spots is the Shuitingmen Historical and Cultural District, located in the western corner of Quzhou city. Here, temples, city towers, historical sites, and clusters of traditional residences are scattered, making it the most representative district of the ancient city's style, known as 'a museum without walls.'
