Kagawa / Kotohira Shrine

Kotohira Shrine is a shrine located on Mount Zozu in Kagawa Prefecture. Since ancient times, it has been worshipped as the god of agriculture, production, medicine, and the protection of the sea. In the precincts, priests and shrine maidens who serve the gods hold various festivals and rituals throughout the year. Famous attractions include the gold coins at the main shrine, the "yellow amulets of happiness," the "Otojin-sama" at the annual festival, the sliding screen paintings by Maruyama Okyo in the Shoin (an important cultural property), kemari (a prefectural intangible folk cultural property), and the 785 stone steps from the temple town to the main shrine, the "Konpira dog." At the 1,368th stone step, in the mountains, it's quite a climb, but you'll find Ikutama Shrine (Okusha), where Ikutamahiko-no-Mikoto is worshiped!
