Kyoto Daitokuji Temple

Daitokuji Temple, one of the most prestigious temples in northern Kyoto, is the head temple of the Daitokuji school of the Rinzai sect. Although much of the temple complex was destroyed during the Onin War, it was later restored by Zen master Ikkyu. During the Azuchi-Momoyama period, the temple flourished greatly as Toyotomi Hideyoshi and other feudal lords contributed to the construction of the temple buildings. Daitokuji is one of Kyoto's largest Zen temples. It has over 20 sub-temples, including many historically significant national treasures such as the main hall and gardens, as well as numerous important cultural properties. Access Take the city bus to 'Daitokuji-mae' and walk for 5 minutes.
