The Gansu Provincial Museum gathers precious cultural relics from Gansu from ancient times to the modern era, with a collection of over 80,000 precious historical artifacts and natural specimens (sets). It is particularly known for its Gansu painted pottery from the Neolithic age, Han Dynasty bamboo slips and wooden tablets, treasures from the Silk Road during the Han and Tang dynasties, Buddhist art treasures, and ancient biological fossils. The predecessor of the Gansu Provincial Museum was the Gansu Science Education Hall, established in 1939. It was renamed the Northwest People's Science Museum in 1950, and then renamed the Gansu Provincial Museum in 1956. In 2012, the Gansu Provincial Museum was promoted to a national first-class museum. The Gansu Provincial Museum is a central position and important place for Gansu's propaganda, education, culture, tourism, and foreign affairs activities. It has been selected as a national patriotic education base, a national science popularization education base, a reserve national defense education base, and a Gansu provincial patriotic education base.
