Meknes: an Imperial City 🇲🇦

Meknes, also known as Mequinez, is a captivating city in Morocco. Its name traces back to the Berber tribe that founded it, known as the Miknasa. Situated approximately 138 kilometers east of Rabat and 60 kilometers west of Fez, Meknes boasts a rich history and cultural significance. Founded in the 11th century by the Almoravids, Meknes began as a military settlement. However, it truly flourished during the reign of Sultan Moulay Ismaïl (1672–1727), who transformed it into the capital of Morocco. Under his rule, Meknes witnessed the creation of a massive imperial palace complex, extensive fortifications, and grand gates. Today, Meknes stands as one of the four Imperial cities of Morocco, nestled in the northern central region. Its historic medina, ancient mosques, and impressive architecture continue to enchant visitors, making it a must-visit destination for those seeking a glimpse into Morocco’s past and present. #dreamvoyage
