In-depth look at Mottainai Flea Market, a community initiative promoting environmental stewardship and sustainable practices Inspired by activist legend Wangari Maathai, the first African woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize for her outstanding environmental and political work, the Mottainai movement urges everyone to embrace the four principles of reduce, reuse, recycle and respect the environment. Held at various locations across Tokyo on select dates, the flea market features a variety of booths reflecting Mottainai’s philosophy. Here, you’ll find stalls stocked with clothing, DVDs, toys, books and more, all speaking out against waste and extravagance. Dates and venues: November 19, 23, 26 and December 3 and 10 in Kichijoji; November 25, 26 and December 17 in Nakano.
