Fenghua - Former Residence of Chiang Kai-shek

The Former Residence of Chiang Kai-shek is located at No. 77, Wuling West Road, Xikou Town, Fenghua District, Ningbo City, Zhejiang Province. It is the former residence of Chiang Kai-shek and Chiang Ching-kuo. The Former Residence of Chiang Kai-shek includes Yutai Salt Shop, Fenghao House, Xiaoyang House, Leting (formerly known as Wenchang Pavilion), Miaogao Terrace, and Cian Temple. The corridors, walls, and columns of Fenghao House are covered with carved paintings, all of which are based on the stories of "The Investiture of the Gods," "Romance of the Three Kingdoms," "The Complete Biography of Yue Fei," and the myth of the Eight Immortals Crossing the Sea. The characters and artistic conceptions are all vivid, reflecting the owner's wish for good luck and the superb skills of Chinese folk artists. On September 15, 1887, Chiang Kai-shek was born in Yutai Salt Shop in the Former Residence of Chiang Kai-shek. The following year, Yutai Salt Shop was destroyed by fire, and Chiang Kai-shek and his mother moved to Fenghao House. In 1924, Chiang Kai-shek entrusted his brother Jieqing to demolish and rebuild Wenchang Pavilion, which was completed the following year and renamed "Leting." He also wrote "Leting Ji" to commemorate the event. In 1927, Chiang Kai-shek built three villas and inscribed the words "Miaogao Terrace." In 1930, Xiaoyang House was built. On December 12, 1939, Leting was destroyed by Japanese bombing. In 1948, Yutai Salt Shop was infested by termites and was demolished and rebuilt again. Chiang Kai-shek inscribed the words "Original Site of Yutai Salt Shop" and signed "Zhongzheng," which was engraved on a stone and erected at the base of the gate wall. In May 1949, Xikou was liberated, and Yutai Salt Shop was taken over by the government and became Xikou Health Center and Fenghua County Third Guest House. In 1983, the government began to restore the buildings of the Former Residence of Chiang Kai-shek, such as Yutai Salt Shop, Leting, Xiaoyang House, Miaogao Terrace, and Cian Temple, according to their original appearance and layout, and partially opened them to the public.
