The Northern Venice is a nickname for Saint Petersburg, Russia. Saint Petersburg is the second largest city in Russia, located on the eastern shore of the Gulf of Finland in the Baltic Sea, at the mouth of the Neva River. It covers an area of 1,350 square kilometers and has a current population of 5 million. The entire city is composed of over 100 islands, connected by more than 700 bridges. Due to its numerous canals and scattered islands, along with its picturesque scenery, it is known as the 'Northern Venice.' The main architectural complexes include the Peter and Paul Fortress and Peter and Paul Cathedral (the burial site of Peter the Great), Smolny Palace, and the Winter Palace. Saint Petersburg is also a renowned cultural city, boasting more than 50 museums, earning it the title of 'Museum City.' The suburban palaces are magnificent, including the Peterhof Palace, known as the 'Russian Versailles,' the Pavlovsk Palace area, and the Tsarskoye Selo, the summer residence of the Tsars.
