Located in the central part of the former Yugoslavia, the country has a total area of 51,200 square kilometers and a population of 3.5 million: Bosniaks account for approximately 50.11%; Serbs account for approximately 30.78%; Croats account for approximately 15.43%. 50.7% of the population are Muslim, 30.75% are Orthodox Christians, 15.19% are Catholics. 52.86% speak Bosnian, 30.76% speak Serbian, 14.6% speak Croatian. This has resulted in the country's leadership being composed of three individuals, with each ethnic group electing a president for a four-year term, during which each person takes turns serving as the chair of the presidency for eight months! The region was occupied by the Roman Empire in 168 BC. In 455, the Ostrogoths took over the area, and the Avars began their invasions in the 6th and 7th centuries, with Slavs also entering the Balkan Peninsula. In 1377, an independent Kingdom of Bosnia was established, but in 1463 it was invaded by the Ottoman Empire, and Bosnia was annexed. It later became a territory of the Ottoman Empire. In 1908, it was annexed by the Austro-Hungarian Empire. In 1918, it joined the Kingdom of Serbia-Croatia-Slovenia, which was renamed the Kingdom of Yugoslavia in 1929. In 1945, it became one of the constituent republics of the Federal People's Republic of Yugoslavia, and declared independence in 1992. The capital, Sarajevo, is located in the eastern part of BiH on the upper course of the Bosna River, surrounded by mountains, with a mild climate. Founded in 1263, it became the trigger for World War I in 1914, and was involved in the Bosnian War from 1992 to 1996.
