Namsangol Hanok Village: From Defense Command to Stunning Attraction

Nestled at the foot of Namsan Mountain, the spectacular cluster of traditional Korean houses, known as hanoks, stands in Namsangol Hanok Village. Unlike Bukchon Hanok Village, which has grown organically, Namsan was once home to the Governor-General's office during the Japanese occupation. After the war, it became the Capital Defense Command. Later, due to extensive urban development, many hanoks were demolished. The government acquired this area and relocated five hanoks from other places to create Namsangol Hanok Village. The village showcases a range of residences, from the grand house of Min Yeong-hwi, a distant relative of Empress Myeongseong, in Jongno, to the homes of the Five Guards in Samcheong-dong, and the house of a carpenter in Samgak-dong. The size of the eaves and the decorations on the wooden beams reflect the social class differences of the time.
