2024 Shanghai Travel Guide: Must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transportation routes (updated in November)
In Shanghai, known as the “Paris of the East,” the cultures from East and West are intertwined to create the city’s cosmopolitan style. What was once the ten-mile Shanghai International Settlement, established by the British in conjunction with Americans and French living along the Huangpu River in present-day Puxi, the metropolis currently develops and changes every day. There are historical and cultural architectural wonders lining the Bund and Xintiandi, as well as fashionable attractions in Pudong, such as the Oriental Pearl TV Tower and Shanghai Disneyland Resort. Young creative souls can go to the Former French Concession’s Tianzifang and 1933 Laoyangfang (a former slaughterhouse turned into unique shops and art galleries) to experience what the area was once like centuries ago. The fashionable can walk up and down Nanjing Xi Shopping Street to their hearts’ content. Foodies can go to the Chenghuang (City God) Temple in the Yu Garden complex to try Shanghai delicacies. Shanghai is a multifaceted place no one will regret visiting.

Shanghai: Easy and Affordable
This was my first time traveling to Shanghai, another city in China. I used the Trip.com app to book everything, including flights, hotels, Disneyland tickets, train tickets, and entry passes to various attractions.
Shanghai is a very livable city with a relatively low cost of living. The atmosphere is fantastic, and the overall environment is picturesque. I must say, spending a week in Shanghai doesn't cost much at all. 🇨🇳📍Location: Shanghai
Shanghai City: Exploring Yu Yuan Old Street 🇨🇳
#shioksightseeing #100waysoftravel
Yu Yuan Old Street is a vibrant tapestry of culture and flavor in Shanghai.
As I strolled along the bustling lanes, the aromas of street food wafted through the air, beckoning all to try local delights. The vibrant shops, offering everything from traditional handicrafts to souvenirs, add to the lively atmosphere.
The beautifully restored architecture transports everyone back in time, making it a feast for the senses. Yu Yuan Old Street is truly a must-visit for anyone looking to experience the heart and soul of Shanghai.
My rating: 4 ⭐️ out of 5!
A Sea of Flowers Like Poetry: Wandering Through the Spring Memories of Shanghai Chenshan Botanical Garden
Stepping into Shanghai Chenshan Botanical Garden feels like entering a fairyland adorned with blooming flowers. The warm and gentle spring sunlight reflects off the colorful sea of flowers, making each bloom appear exceptionally vibrant. Various flowers bloom in succession, from delicate cherry blossoms to elegant tulips, swaying gently in the breeze and emitting a subtle fragrance that is intoxicating.
I wandered leisurely along the flower-lined paths, bending down to closely observe the posture of each flower, marveling at their beauty and vitality. In the distance, the lake and mountain scenery complement each other, adding a layer of tranquility to the sea of flowers. Visitors, in small groups, either take photos in front of the flowers or rest on the grass, with laughter and floral scents intertwining, filling the entire garden with vitality.
Every step here is full of surprises, making it hard to leave. The sea of flowers in Chenshan Botanical Garden is not only a gift from nature but also a dream meticulously woven by spring for people.
Shanghai: A Journey Through Time and Space
Shanghai: A Walk Through a City of Prosperity and Charm
Shanghai is an international metropolis that blends history and modernity, full of charm. The European-style buildings on the Bund contrast sharply with the skyscrapers in Lujiazui on the opposite bank, symbolizing the city's prosperous development. Shopping on Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street allows you to experience Shanghai's fashionable atmosphere, while the snacks at the City God Temple give you a taste of authentic Shanghai flavors. At night, you can take a cruise on the Huangpu River to enjoy the dazzling night view. Whether it's the historical culture or modern life, Shanghai is a place that leaves people lingering and longing for more.
The Rockbund: A must visit spot in Shanghai!
I'm not into touristy places but the Rockbund is different, especially if you visit this place in a sunny day. I instantly love its vibe the moment I stepped foot here. It's the modern version of The bund with a bunch of cafes and bakeries.
If you go here, you must try %Arabica. It's the best %Arabica in the world (personally opinion)

SHANGHAI DISNEYLAND 🎉🎡🎢
One day in "SHANGHAI DISNEYLAND"
🎫 Early Entry Ticket
Early Entry

3. Soaring Over the Horizon (100/10) :

10. Slinky Dog Spin (2/10) :

Pink Tamburins newly opened in Shanghai.
Tamburins tamburins
In Shanghai, hausnowhere Nudake, Gentle Monster, and Tamburins are in one building where I shopped, but now Tamburins has its own standalone building. The concept of this Tamburins building is Pink Rose.
📍Location: No. 1 Nanjing West Road Station
10-minute walk from Exit 1 of Nanjing West Road Station
⏰Operating hours: Daily 11:00-21:00
✔They sell perfumes, body washes, hand creams, and candles.
The body products don't have a wide variety of scents.

AWESOME SHANGHAI NIGHT LIFE & Food - The Bund & Nanjing Road
#nightlife
The Bund (上海滩)is famous for its grand, Western-style buildings that were built in the late 19th and early 20th Centuries. Both day and night have spectacular view. A MUST VISIT when in Shanghai.
Recommended to try the RIVIERA松鹤楼外滩店 which serves nice shanghai cuisine and has spectacular bund view. Upfront reservation needed to get good seat with nice scenery view.
Nanjing Road (南京路) is a road in Shanghai, the eastern part of which is the main shopping district of Shanghai. It is one of the world's busiest shopping streets, along with Fifth Avenue, Oxford Street, Orchard Road, Takeshita Street and the Champs-Élysées. If lazy or tired to walk the whole shopping street about 2-3km long, there is option to ride the train which only costs RMB10/pax for one way🙂.

Shanghai Cultural and Creative Park EKA·Tianwu: A Convergence of Art and Creativity
Apart from Tianzifang, Shanghai boasts numerous cultural and creative parks. Located on Jinqiao Road in Pudong New Area, the EKA·Tianwu Cultural and Creative Park 🏙️ is steeped in rich history 📜. This site was once home to the Shanghai Marine Instrument Factory, with its origins tracing back to the Old Customs Pudong Factory in 1869. Over time, this historic location has been transformed into a park brimming with creativity and artistic atmosphere ✨.
Stepping into EKA·Tianwu, you'll find unique buildings 🏛️, each with its own distinctive design and color. The architectural styles blend exotic elements with whimsical ideas, making visitors feel as if they are in a dreamlike art world 🌈.
The park hosts various art exhibitions 🖼️ and creative studios 🎨, along with cultural events and markets 🛍️, providing a platform for artists and creative individuals to exchange ideas and showcase their work. Whether you are an art-loving tourist 👩🎨 or a creative professional seeking inspiration 🖌️, this is an ideal destination.
Once the most famous of Shanghai's four ancient towns, now the least visited.
🎈In Shanghai, there is a low-key and primitive ancient town—Luodian Ancient Town.
🏠It was built in the Zhizheng period of the Yuan dynasty and has a history of over 600 years. 😃Unlike other bustling ancient towns, Luodian is relatively unknown and not overly commercialized.
✨It has the charm of a Jiangnan water town, known as the "Three Bays, Nine Streets, and Eighteen Alleys." The streets connect to alleys, alleys connect to bridges, and bridges connect to rivers. Walking through the alleys, you can savor the ancient and legendary atmosphere. 💦The white walls and black tiles of the Huizhou-style buildings, combined with the small bridges and flowing water, showcase the traditional Jiangnan water town style.
🏠The town is small, with shops that seem to have stopped in the 1980s. The stone-paved roads are empty, and old-fashioned barber shops evoke memories. 🚶♂️Strolling through the mottled alleys is a unique experience.
💯Visit Luodian Ancient Town on a weekend outing. Here, there is no hustle and bustle of the city center, only tranquility. 🌳Relax and enjoy the peace and beauty of the Jiangnan water town.
📍Address: 50 meters north of the intersection of Xinqiao Street and Luosheng Road, Baoshan District, Shanghai.

Beautiful Photo Spots in Shanghai
This spot is incredibly beautiful, located on the north side of The Bund. I followed a review to get there, and there weren't many people in line, but it was truly stunning. Then, I moved on to another trendy area. This neighborhood is very chic and artsy, with delicious tea that I absolutely loved, especially the jasmine tea. I think about it all the time. I really like this area a lot. It's clean, has plenty of shops, and lots of food options.
Stop going to the Bund! Come and see the blue hour by the Huangpu River in Shanghai.
Blue hour
A limited romantic moment that only lasts for 20 minutes a day
The sun has already set below the horizon
The sky no longer has a single focus
It's also the best time to take pictures of Shanghai's skyline
-
📍Address: Pudong New Area, Shanghai - Tangqiao Ferry Terminal
🚇Transportation: Subway Line 4 - Tangqiao Station Exit 3 - Walk about 800 meters
📸Photo: Nikon z50/16-50
🕘Time: Taken at 6-7 pm
-
🌃Blue hour shooting tips:
1⃣️Arrive at the shooting location in advance
The blue hour is very short, usually only about 20 minutes
You can check the blue hour time on the phone app
2⃣️Use a tripod
At this time, the sky is already dark, the camera shutter speed is slower, and the tripod can avoid the screen shaking caused by holding the camera.
3⃣️Increase the contrast of warm and cold
The "blue hour" is an excellent shooting time for photographers. The light is relatively soft, and it is easy to take pictures with the city lights to form a warm and cold contrast.
-
After the sunset, the sky slowly turns red
Then slowly dissipate and become a quiet blue
Many people like to sit by the Huangpu River in Shanghai and enjoy the evening breeze
Watching the sunset and the moon rise
I love this free and romantic atmosphere
I didn't want to leave after staying for one night.
1️⃣ The room has an unbeatable view. Whether it's day or night, I could look at it for hours.
2️⃣ The 47th floor Italian restaurant IIRistorante has great views and food. If you're talking about the world's most popular chefs, Italy's Niko Romito is definitely one of them. His restaurant Reale in southern Italy has three Michelin stars and is ranked 19th in the world's 50 best restaurants. The sea urchin pasta and Angus beef sirloin with almond sauce are excellent. The Italian desserts are also not to be missed.
3️⃣ 24-hour breakfast. This is a special service at every Bulgari hotel. Breakfast is available 24 hours a day, so you can order "breakfast" in your room even late at night. You can also order stir-fried beef ho fun and Wagyu fried rice for breakfast.
4️⃣ The two Michelin-starred restaurant Bao Li Xuan. Located in the century-old Shanghai General Chamber of Commerce building, it specializes in exquisite Cantonese cuisine, with some dishes adjusted to suit the tastes of diners in Shanghai and the Jiangsu and Zhejiang regions. It focuses on seasonal and local ingredients. The bamboo fungus and conch soup with fish maw, bitter gourd and gluten pot with eel, M9 Wagyu beef with sand ginger and crispy garlic, and abalone pastry are all good.
Shanghai. Wu Kang Road, a popular spot for trendsetters.
As an international metropolis, Shanghai has many popular check-in spots. Here are some of them:
1. Oriental Pearl Radio & TV Tower: As a landmark of Shanghai, the tower has a space capsule, revolving restaurant, Shanghai City History Development Exhibition Hall, and other attractions and facilities. It is one of the must-visit attractions for tourists.
2. 1192 Lane Old Shanghai Style Street: Here reproduces the style of old Shanghai. The mottled Shikumen, old record player, tram and other elements make people feel as if they have traveled back to old Shanghai.
3. Xintiandi: Based on Shanghai's unique Shikumen old building area, it has been transformed into a leisure pedestrian street integrating catering, commerce, entertainment, and culture. It is a place to experience the combination of old and new Shanghai.
4. Tianzifang: This is a gathering place for literary youths. There are many gourmet snack shops and literary shops. It is known as "Xintiandi No. 2".
5. Shanghai Museum of Glass: The first industry museum in Asia that comprehensively displays glass art. The outer wall is inlaid with more than 4,800 transparent glass bricks, which is particularly beautiful under the night light.
6. The Bund: One of the most representative attractions in Shanghai, there are 52 classical revival buildings with different styles. The Bund has recently upgraded its lights and has become an excellent place for check-in and photography.
7. Shanghai Disneyland: Disneyland is not only a paradise for children, but also a place for adults to find their childhood. The fireworks show at night is not to be missed.
8. Shanghai Ocean Aquarium: An internationally first-class modern large-scale ocean aquarium, exhibiting rare fish from all over the world, and one of the longest underwater tunnels in the world.
9. Wu Kang Road: Known as the "celebrity road that condenses Shanghai's modern history for nearly a hundred years", there are many excellent historical buildings, which is a good place to go shopping in late autumn.
10. 1933 Old Millfun: Originally a slaughterhouse of the Ministry of Industry, it has now been transformed into a well-known art park in Shanghai, gathering artist galleries, concert halls, restaurants, shops, etc.
These places not only have unique historical and cultural values, but also represent the modern Shanghai fashion trend, which is very suitable for taking pictures and check-in. 📸👣🚶🏻♂️➡️🍹👍

Shanghai Disneyland
This time, I took my daughter to Shanghai Disneyland mainly for the Zootopia theme. Since it was a weekday, there weren't too many people; the longest wait time for any ride was only 30 minutes. We entered the park at 10 AM and managed to enjoy over 70% of the attractions, including Zootopia's Hot Pursuit, Seven Dwarfs Mine Train (which she rode multiple times as a single rider), Buzz Lightyear Planet Rescue, Peter Pan's Flight, Slinky Dog Spin, Soaring Over the Horizon, Explorer Canoes, Voyage to the Crystal Grotto, Frozen: A Sing-Along Celebration, and Alice in Wonderland Maze. My daughter was very satisfied and mentioned how rare it was to enjoy so many of her favorite rides. We had two meals in the park because our tickets included a 100 RMB meal voucher, which was really worth it! The nighttime Ignite the Dream: A Nighttime Spectacular of Magic and Light show was very special, not only featuring fireworks but also moving water in the pool and animations projected onto the Enchanted Storybook Castle. Both my daughter and I were very satisfied.

🚶My Route:
East Gate Entrance➡️Metasequoia Forest➡️Calendula➡️Flower Valley➡️Small Wooden House➡️Allium➡️Field Flower Sea➡️Chongyuan Garden
📸Recommended Attractions
1️⃣Flower Valley (P1-P9)
For self-driving, it is recommended to enter from the East Gate and go straight to the Flower Valley's large slope flower sea. It will be very far if you enter from the North Gate!
The flower sea here is large, with hills and ups and downs, which is very good for taking photos. There are special paths for flower viewing, so you can walk and take photos in the flower sea without stepping on the flowers.
✅There are many people, it is recommended to take photos from below to avoid the crowd, and use flowers as a foreground to blur the background.
✅Large swathes of Pink Muhly Grass flower sea, using hills and water surfaces to create a staggered feeling.
✅There is a small wooden house by the water, the windows are very photogenic, and the bridge is also a good place to take panoramic photos.
⚠️The sunset at dusk is even more beautiful, like a fairy tale world.
2️⃣Field Flower Sea (P10-P18)
Pink Muhly Grass is mainly distributed around the Flower Valley. The field flower sea is less crowded and the flower sea is not fenced, making it easier to take photos!
There are several patches of Pink Muhly Grass and Calendula, with fewer people. The dirt road is covered with turf, full of rural atmosphere.
