Tai'erzhuang Ancient City Scenic Area (3): Tai'erzhuang Battle Relics Park

Tai'erzhuang Ancient City, the largest ancient city in China, along with the capital of Poland, Warsaw, is one of the only two cities in the world that were rebuilt as 'World Cultural Heritage' sites after being destroyed by the artillery fire of World War II. As early as 1938, the famous war correspondent Robert Capa published photos of the battlefield in Tai'erzhuang in the American magazine 'Life', commenting: 'There are many small towns in history that have been turning points: Waterloo, Verdun... and today a new name is added - Tai'erzhuang. A town too small to be any smaller, a town through which the Grand Canal from Beijing to Hangzhou passes, a victory has made it the most famous village in China.' The great victory at Tai'erzhuang, through the bloody battle of the Chinese army, ended in a tragic victory, annihilating nearly 20,000 enemies while suffering over 50,000 casualties. Zhou Enlai commented: 'Its significance lies in influencing the overall situation of the resistance war, affecting the whole country, the enemy, and the world.' Visiting Tai'erzhuang Ancient City, seeing the displays, pictures in the Tai'erzhuang Battle Relics Park, looking at the bullet marks on the walls, witnessing the heroic deeds of the martyrs, and exposing the war crimes of the Japanese army invading China, reminds us: never forget history, cherish peace.
