Hotel Riu Cabo Verde - All Inclusive Adults Only

All in all a nice week in the sun at a resort where you need to manage your expectations. Who this is good for: those looking for some sunshine, good beach, nice pool, and a no hassle/frills all inclusive break. Who this is not so good for: those who want a quieter resort, more relaxed, and finer dining experiences. (Generally we prefer this option) Some of the good points: the staff are friendly, kind and helpful; it’s a nice place to get some sun - the pool is nice (but busy) as is the beach (quieter in places but loungers tired and some broken); the food has a good variety (including for veggies) though mixed quality, drinks variety good; the entertainment is a little hit and miss - the white night was good fun - but note children from the adjoining hotel are welcome; there are places to enjoy a quieter drink but these spots can also be quite popular. The rooms are not grand but they are clean and the shower is good - we can’t complain about the service here with room service several times a day; the spa treatment was nice and we made the most of the weekly offer they had available; there are also some good activities offsite at a reasonable charge if you want to mix things up. A few things to improve: flies and wasps at steakhouse; better segregation between smoking and non-smoking would be welcome; some of the facilities are tired but they function; the tv in the room didn’t have the best sound / reception; the beach loungers need an upgrade as many are tired / broken; a few quieter areas and activities through the day (away from the pool) would be nice as the grounds are large and well kept. A few hints and tips if you visit: The pool gets busy so you need your get a bed early; remember to book the restaurants early in your stay; dining at the main restaurant during the day is nicer than the steakhouse; if you want to use the spa remember to book; eat later to avoid the mad rush; remember your white outfit if you want to join in white night; pop to the beach (though not adults only) as the bar there is nice and a welcome mix up from the more popular pool area.

We had 1 weeks holiday here; of course you can always improve but overall we cannot find anything of note to complain about, just goes to show with some of the reviews it’s nigh impossible to decide where to choose to stay and sometimes you just need to go for it. Top of the most liked was the staff, all very efficient, friendly and hard working. You can’t help but admire them as it cannot be an easy life in a relatively low income country with surely not a lot of opportunities. It’s an amazing feat re food preparation, quality and quantity throughout all the restaurants that everything is seamless especially as we’re led to believe Cabo Verde is mostly reliant on imports. Another very good aspect was the internet, you would have thought with all the guests there would be issues, we experienced very few. There are of course those who get up at the crack of dawn and put their towels on loungers around the pools, I don’t know why, yet again no issues here, we found plenty of loungers in good locations no matter what time we went to the pool so can only assume for those lounge reservers it’s a holiday hobby more than anything else. The hotel location is great, nice beach at one end of the hotel, a turtle hatchery 10 minute walk (when in season) and Santa Maria maybe 30 in the opposite direction. Our suggestion for walking there if you don’t want a hard walk on the beach is a walk on the road to the Hilton and then cut down the road right before the Hilton where you will find a walk way on the beach all the way to the centre. When you arrive at the centre beware of the congregated individuals, they will look at your hotel wrist band and say they work at that hotel and do you want to go to the local market, this is all a bit of a con to get you to a shop related to them in some manner.

The complex are blocks of apartments that are mainly for self catering. It was quite a distance from airport costing 20 euros by taxi. Check in was a lengthy process with little info on the resort surrounding area, apart from shuttle bus time table. There was no local public bus information regarding destination and timetable, which would have helped us a lot. We were very impressed with the spacious suite of 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, fully equipped kitchen and through lounge with large balcony to the rear, overlooking the pool and another large balcony to the front. Ironing board and iron, hairdryer, showers were effective with good temperature control, air conditioning units. Everything spotless, clean towels when needed, towels for pool supplied. Free shuttlebus service to town, capital city or the beach. There is a bank on site as well as a supermarket, coffee shop, restaurant and small bar. We were half board basis and were very disappointed with the choices of the buffet dinner each night plus the food was cold. We did report this after our first meal but nothing was done - still cold each night!. Breakfast had the same choices each morning but was ok. Staff were friendly and helpful throughout. Overall, our stay was enjoyable with impressive suite of rooms but was marred by the dining experience.
Sol Dunas

Spent a week here with my mum and my 4 year old son in the Easter holidays. We booked to stay in the Sol Dunas but think we were staying in the Melia Dunas part. Its impossible to tell where one hotel ends and the other begins, it just feels like one big resort Top tip: soon as you arrive find out how to book your evening a la carte restaurants (when we were here you had to go to Odessy piano bar (inside) from 10.30am). They get booked up quickly. We only dinned in Atlantis and Sahel and both were great Childrens entertainment was excellent. Lollo and Bernie (plus Astrid and the other kids club staff) really made our holiday. My son loved them. The 5.30pm mini disco was a huge hit. I understand this (Lollo and Bernie program of events) has now all finished for the season although the hotel also had kids club facilities. Food and drink. ”Spices” is the buffet restaurant and ”Mosiac” (they are in the same building) is the part open for snacks outside of main meal times . We enjoyed the food. Ate salads all week and some of the meat. Did feel a bit samey at times but we could always find something to eat. You can also have lunch at Aqua which is pizza and pasta and is table service. So nice to mix it up and go there. The a la carte restaurants for evening meals also help provide variety. Coffee is best ordered at the bars, it doesnt taste nice out of the machine in Spices. We were also happy with the selection of drinks served in the various pool/beach bars Kids splash pool was another big hit and we spent almost all of our time here. There are some building works happening next to it but they do not disturb you Our room was large and clean. The houskeeping staff did a great job. Only issues (we did not raise this with the hotel at the time so they ve had no opportunity to address this and it didnt really bother us that much) the safe was temperamental it would lock but then sometimes wouldnt open! The plug in our bathroom sink was also a bit problematic, it would get stuck. If u were not careful the shower also flooded the bathroom. Had to be very careful to angle it away from the shower screen (that had a gap at the bottom). Overall we loved our holiday here and we are already discussing booking for next year (as long as Lollo and Bernie are there!!!) Biggest bit of feedback to the hotel would be: you need to make it easier to find out some of the information on restaurants, meal times, events, etc. The QR codes didnt really give enough. A sheet in the room or information pack would be helpful Thanks for a great holiday!

Have stayed before and gave in 4* Was bit disappointed this time Paid extra for pool view as last time was kept awake by Pirate disco. Were initially shown to top floor room directly opposite disco. We asked to be moved and were given a room by the pool. This smelt of damp and there was a large patch of mould on the wall. The toilet leaked water from the back. There was not hot water for the full week. The sunbeds were all reserved by 8am-luckily few guests knew about the upstairs terrace which was great. Breakfast was very good but chaotic constantly running out of everything. The evening meal was ok but service was terribly slow-the poor water was rushed off his feet doing everything. We ate out the other nights and there are loads of good restaurants in 2 mins walk Its basically a decent value hotel with great staff and a fab location 3mins from pier and beach--would I go again ?? --probably. If you want 5* you can probably get in an AI out of town --but you will miss so much.

One of the best hotels we’ve stayed in. True family hotel with roots in the community stretching back generations. The restaurant was fantastic (breakfast did get busy) but the staff were brilliant. The beach bar was so chilled out. The live music was a real treat and each night was live and felt very special. But the setting….omg. I challenge anyone to sit in the bar / restaurant and look around you and not be in love with your surroundings….. There are some really Kak reviews on here about this place. If you like your big corporates with rows of deck chairs, expensive restaurants and looking down your nose then don’t bother. On the other hand, if your a lover of trying quality local food, kicking back with a view to die for and feeling the vibe of ‘no stress’ around the pools then try it….
