Zhangjiajie for Elderly Travellers: Is It Really Suitable for Your Parents?

The short answer

Yes. With one exception.

If your parents can walk for 40 minutes, sit down, then get up and walk again, Zhangjiajie will reward them. If one needs a wheelchair, book something else: this park is built on stone stairs.

Three separate places, not one

Everyone says "Zhangjiajie" like it is one park. It is not. Wulingyuan, Tianmen Mountain and the Grand Canyon have separate gates, tickets and walking loads, and Wulingyuan sits 45 minutes from Tianmen by road.

Pick the wrong town for your hotel and your parents will spend their energy in a car.

The parts that are genuinely hard

Rain, first. The steps are stone, and from March to August it rains constantly. Wet stone plus a walking stick equals a bad afternoon.

Third, Tianmen Mountain has no hotel on it. None. Last admission is 16:00, so the whole mountain has to be finished in one day. Put it after a rest day, never before a flight.

The infrastructure is unusually kind, though. Wulingyuan's ¥236 four-day pass includes the eco-buses between viewpoints. Fog, meanwhile, does not care about your schedule.

What to skip

  • The 999 steps up to Heaven's Gate. There is an escalator inside the mountain instead.
  • The canyon slide, and the via ferrata at Qixing Mountain.
  • Buying tickets on the day. Tianmen sells out, Route A goes first, and each ticket is tied to a passport number.

What visitors actually report

Reviews say more about stamina and stairs than any brochure does. On the lifts. StefanBC rated the Bailong Elevator 5.0 and wrote: "The Bailong Elevator was a great experience and definitely one of the most unique ways to reach the mountains in Zhangjiajie. The speed, height, and incredible views as you rise between the cliffs make the ride quite impressive. It is very convenient if you are visiting Yuanjiajie, as it saves a significant amount of time and a long climb."

SOON YOONG LAN, on the Tianmen Mountain cableway: "We are so happy to visit Tianmen Mountain. We bought the ticket from Trip.com. we choose Line C. Take the bus from shuttle bus station up to the cable Car station . We have to buy extra one CNY32 escalator up to the hills for 2 ways. Thank you Trip.com." That ¥32 escalator is the most useful number here for older legs.

On pace. A visitor who rated the national forest park 5.0: "We spent the whole day in the National forest park trying to find our way out, it was beautiful even though it was foggy, I'm thankful that at the end everything cleared before we left so we could see the scenery. The Grand canyon was definitely my favorite, the view and the walking was worth every penny (although my only complaint was that the slide was very difficult to slide?). Overall great memory."

Travelling King, on the Grand Canyon glass bridge: "Its worth the visit. Nice and wash. Relaxing day. The bridge looks great from far. Trying going all the way down and walk along the stream. Other activities aswell. It you get tired of walking down, take the slide."

On the smaller stops. 曼彻斯特飞兔, rating the Ten-mile Gallery 4.0: "The miniature train is a loop line, divided into uphill and downhill sections, each costing 38 yuan. It's recommended to take the uphill section, as the scenery is on your left, near a door only waist-high, offering unobstructed views."

AlexandreCoutooo, on Baofeng Lake: "All the lake and scenario is stunning beautiful, but the history told is all in mandarim, so you have to search about the history before or only go to the view".

On Huanglong Cave, rated 5.0: "I have visited many caves around the world, but this one is truly unique; first, regarding its scale, there are many beautiful places inside where you can spend about an hour and a half, and second, the lighting makes you feel like you are not just in a cave, but in a fairy tale."

On wayfinding. An anonymous visitor rated Tianmen Mountain 4.0: "Stunning scenery despite being heavily commercialised. Routes well signposted in English with clear instructions on transport options (lifts, shuttles, etc)."

Book High-Speed Rail to Zhangjiajie

Getting there, and where to sleep

No scheduled non-stop flies Kuala Lumpur to Zhangjiajie. Fly direct to Changsha, then take the high-speed train to Zhangjiajie West: 1 hour 45 minutes, about 62 departures a day, from roughly RM32.

Then sleep in two places: two or three nights in Wulingyuan town, then one or two in Zhangjiajie city near the cableway station. Check for a lift, air-conditioning, breakfast and a low floor. Riverside guesthouses photograph beautifully and are often stairs-only.

This hotel offers incredible value for money, even more economical than some domestic chain hotels at the same time – quite surprising! I initially booked for two nights, had a great stay, and extended for another night in the same room. My child didn't want to leave and spent every day playing with other kids at the pool. Overall, it's an established five-star hotel. I booked a 2.7-meter king-size bed, which is perfect for families with children. The breakfast was plentiful, with everything you'd expect. While having breakfast, I noticed almost half the guests were foreigners, either families with kids or couples. There are plenty of restaurants right across the street, making dining very convenient. The 'Charming Xiangxi' theater is right next door, but we weren't interested in that type of show and didn't go – but it might appeal to others. We walked back to the hotel from the Landmark Gate (East Gate) once, and it was a bit far, so I'd recommend taking a taxi. Choosing Pullman this time was a very wise decision; it's an older hotel but very well-managed overall. Highly recommended! Friends can consider it based on their own circumstances.

Staying at Wotianju this trip was a delightful surprise! It's incredibly close to all the attractions, basically within ten minutes. We drove there ourselves, and the hotel itself is unbelievably huge – you even need to drive to get around inside! The front desk also gave us a free room upgrade, which made us really not want to leave. The hotel pays attention to details everywhere: the butler service is super responsive and on-call, the welcome fruit was chilled, and even a simple blanched lettuce at the Chinese restaurant was delicious. You can tell the chef really knows their stuff – it was fresh and not greasy. You could easily just stay at the hotel for all your eating, drinking, and entertainment needs. There's a huge lawn, and reading a book and having tea by the river under the trees was just incredibly relaxing; time just seemed to slow down. After dinner, we'd go swimming and then soak in the hot springs. Honestly, even though it's an outdoor hot spring, the cleanliness was excellent. Back where we're from, a hot spring of this quality for two people would cost about the same as a night's stay! I forgot my facial cleanser when we left, and the butler even arranged for SF Express to send it home – absolutely perfect! You can tell the owner put a lot of effort into the hotel's construction, design, and staff management. I would definitely come back to Zhangjiajie just for this hotel again. A hundred points!

Overall, my stay was fantastic. Check-in was efficient and the front desk staff were very friendly, even offering us a room upgrade. The room was clean and tidy, the bedding was soft, and the soundproofing was good, so I had a really peaceful night's sleep. The bathroom had a separate wet and dry area, strong water pressure, and a full range of amenities. Breakfast had a wide variety of options, including hot dishes, fruits, and local specialties, all of which tasted great. The hotel's location is convenient, with plenty of amenities nearby. The service was attentive, it's close to Tianmen Mountain, and there's parking available. I would definitely choose to stay here again.

We had a fantastic stay at Forest Homestay at Sunrise and would highly recommend it to anyone visiting Zhangjiajie National Forest Park. The room was spacious, comfortable and spotlessly clean, with beautiful views of the surrounding mountains. Waking up to the scenery each morning was a real highlight of our stay. The food in the restaurant was excellent. We ate there multiple times and everything we ordered was fresh, delicious and very reasonably priced. It was a lovely place to relax after a long day exploring the park. What really made our stay exceptional, however, was the staff. They were incredibly kind, patient and helpful from start to finish. Before we arrived, they helped organise our transfers to and from the hotel, making the journey completely stress-free. They also took the time to plan our itinerary for Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, explaining the different routes and helping us make the most of our time there. Thanks to their advice, we managed to avoid the long queues and see all of the major highlights efficiently, making our visit far more enjoyable. The genuine warmth and hospitality of everyone at the hotel made us feel very welcome. We would happily stay here again and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to anyone visiting Zhangjiajie National Forest Park.

This is by far the best hotel I've stayed at in Zhangjiajie, no contest! Absolutely delightful. The pool water was super clean, and there were several lifeguards – it's the most responsible setup I've ever seen. The room was spacious with a balcony, which I loved. Before this, we'd been hopping from hotel to hotel. The ones near the scenic spots were either ridiculously expensive if they were decent, or felt like we were fleeing for our lives rather than vacationing if they were cheap. Not a single one made us feel at ease until this place. Before we even checked in, the hotel called to confirm our arrival time. When we got there, a butler even opened our car door and helped with our luggage – truly five-star service! And we only paid around 400 yuan. The lobby decor is incredibly luxurious and grand, and the rooms are beautifully decorated too. The service is top-notch! The breakfast is simply unbeatable – great ambiance, excellent hygiene, and a wide variety of dishes. In short, this is a hotel that genuinely cares about hospitality. They put a lot of effort into everything, and I highly recommend them. We'll definitely be back. Don't let the distance from the scenic area deter you; it's only about a 10-minute taxi ride. We used to think booking hotels close to the attractions was better, but that's what made our trips feel like an escape. It wasn't until we stayed here that we truly understood what a Zhangjiajie vacation should be like!

The hotel kindly upgraded my room upon check-in, and the room was spacious, airy, clean, and very comfortable. The hotel also helps guests book tickets for Tianmen Mountain and Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, offering exclusive discounts that save the hassle of buying tickets yourself. The hotel is quite large, with grand and open public areas. The breakfast selection is incredibly rich, and with multiple dining areas, there’s no crowded queuing, which is great for guests heading out to attractions early. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Absolutely wonderful stay – highly recommended! I had a fantastic experience at Hampton by Hilton Zhangjiajie Tianmen Mountain. From the moment I arrived, the staff were incredibly welcoming, kind and genuinely helpful. Travelling through China as a foreign visitor can occasionally come with little language challenges, but here I felt completely looked after. The hotel itself is modern, exceptionally clean and very comfortable. My room was spacious, beautifully maintained and a wonderful place to come back to after a long day exploring Zhangjiajie. The bed was extremely comfortable, everything worked perfectly, and the overall standard of the hotel exceeded my expectations. The location is also excellent, particularly if you are visiting Tianmen Mountain. Being right across the cable car It made sightseeing so much easier and took a lot of the stress out of planning the day. What really made the stay memorable, though, was the hospitality. The staff went out of their way to assist whenever I needed something, despite the language difference, and always did so with patience and a smile. That kind of genuine service makes an enormous difference when you are travelling alone in another country. I have stayed in many hotels during my travels, and this was one of those places where I felt both comfortable and genuinely cared for. Excellent value, excellent service and a hotel I would happily choose again. We had a wonderful stay at Manyuan Hotel. The view from the hotel was absolutely amazing, and the location is very convenient, especially being close to the East Gate of Zhangjiajie National Park. What really stood out was their warm hospitality. Since we had an early morning train to catch, the hotel kindly arranged breakfast for us as early as 5:00 AM. This thoughtful gesture truly made our stay even more special. Highly recommended for the beautiful views, convenient location, and genuinely caring service.

If I had to describe this hotel in one word, it would be 'comfortable.' It's located across from the Hilton and has parking. The only downsides are that the decor is a bit dated. However, the cleanliness is impeccable. Plus, the newly renovated hotel across the street also belongs to them! 😄 The owner is absolutely fantastic! 🔝 He gave us a very detailed explanation of the tour routes, and he even helped us book tickets for Tianmen Mountain and the Forest Park, which saved us money and hassle. I also highly recommend the hotel's restaurant. The food is delicious and affordable. The 98 RMB 'three pot' set meal has generous portions – too much for two people to finish. Finally, the breakfast buffet is great. I felt like the two of us easily got 50 RMB worth of value back from our stay just from breakfast. This place comes highly recommended!

This hotel has a great atmosphere, and even features a pool, though it's only open from 3 PM to 9 PM. The most stunning feature is the rooftop observation deck, offering panoramic views of Wulingyuan and the surrounding mountains. However, the rooms themselves leave a lot to be desired; the hotel is definitely in need of a renovation and interior updates. Some rooms face the pool, while others, like mine, just look out onto the staircase leading to the upper floors. The room appeared larger in the photos than it was in reality. The hotel breakfasts are decent; you can grab a bite from 7 AM to 9 AM before heading out for a hike in the mountains. The location isn't ideal for the East Gate, though, as you'll have to walk almost entirely through the town for 15-20 minutes or take a taxi. On the bright side, the hotel is surrounded by plenty of shops and restaurants.

An exceptional stay from start to finish. The room featured the largest, most comfortable bed I have ever experienced — the quality of rest alone made this hotel stand out. Breakfast was outstanding, with an extensive range of options to suit every preference. The hospitality was truly first-class; the hosts were attentive and gracious, going so far as to launder my clothes without hesitation. I was generously upgraded to the largest room, and while it did not offer a view, every other aspect of the experience was faultless. My only minor observation — offered as feedback rather than criticism — is that the in-room Bluetooth was not functional; had it been, the room would have been flawless. A remarkable stay overall, and one I will not hesitate to book again.

I had such a lovely stay here! It’s a shame that I only stayed for one night. I was able to check in early, which was great after an early train ride and was greeted by friendly staff and a welcome package of snacks, toiletries and homemade glutinous rice wrapped in bamboo leaves! It was so thoughtful and kind of them. The location is perfect with the lower cable way station for Tianmen Mountain just a couple minutes walk away. There are also plenty of shops and restaurants nearby. The room was perfectly clean and had everything I needed. I would absolutely recommend staying here!

The room was spacious, clean, and incredibly comfortable! The airport pick-up and drop-off were also very prompt! My child loved it! Outside the hotel, there's a food street with all sorts of delicious options, and some restaurants have extremely high ratings. I tried a few, and they were indeed excellent. The hotel is not far from Tianmen Mountain Cableway, Hehua Airport, High-Speed Rail West Station, and Tianmen Fox Fairy Grand Theater, making it extremely convenient to get around! I'll definitely stay here again if I have the chance!

If you want a quiet place with exceptional service, this is the place to stay. We spent 5 nights here. They provide personalised trip planning, discount ticket booking for all attractions in the Zhangjiajie area, and a free shuttle to the South gate entrance. The shuttle is free back and forth (up to 3km one way) for any reason - dinners near the gate, for example. The breakfast is served to you and was delicious, they also accommodated my vegetarian requests. This is a small hotel - but with a homestay or B&B vibe. A lot of care and detail has been put into the design of the entire facility. There is an elevator. There is a natural spring with a dipper in the lower level - excellent drinking water! We refilled our water bottles there several times. Our room had the forest view with a terrace. It was great to have the extra space to relax in. This comes up as a Didi location, so it was easy to schedule our rides to and from the airport and train station. We took a Didi back from the east gate one day - so crazy there and noisy in that area! If you like huge hotels and a party atmosphere, stay there. Otherwise, choose the Qiquan.

Excellent | Surprisingly Convenient and Peaceful This stay far exceeded my expectations! The hotel's location is truly unbeatable. I timed it myself: about 20 minutes to the high-speed rail station, 15 minutes to the airport, and only about 10 minutes to the bus/train station. Getting a ride was super easy, making it a true gem for business travelers or anyone needing to catch a train/flight. What was most surprising is that despite such a convenient location, the hotel's surroundings were exceptionally quiet, completely undisturbed by traffic noise. I slept incredibly soundly at night and could even hear birds chirping in the morning. The service was also very friendly. I highly recommend this hotel to travelers who value both convenient transportation and a peaceful environment for rest! I will definitely choose to stay here again next time.

My stay here was excellent. The lobby is spacious, and the hotel environment is very pleasant. My stay was great! I booked this hotel online and it exceeded my expectations. The location is easy to find and very convenient for getting around; there's a bus stop right outside. Dining and shopping options nearby are also plentiful. The hotel itself is clean and tidy, and the public areas are fresh and comfortable. The room was spacious, especially the large, comfortable floor-to-ceiling window, which provided excellent light and ventilation. All the facilities and amenities were complete and in good working order. The bedding was very comfortable, making for a worry-free stay. Overall, it offered great value for money.

I traveled with my family and chose this hotel. The accommodation experience was absolutely amazing. I have to give it a five-star rating! The moment you step into the hotel, you will be infected by its elegant and grand atmosphere. When checking in, the staff was not only extremely efficient, but also patiently answered our various questions about nearby tours. Their attitude was as friendly as old friends who had not seen each other for a long time. The room is very warmly decorated, spacious and bright, with great lighting. As soon as you open the window, you can see the beautiful city view, and your mood will instantly improve. The bed was clean and comfortable, and even the pillows were at just the right height, allowing my family and I to have a good night's sleep. The bathroom is also very user-friendly, and they provide toiletries specifically for children, which is very thoughtful. The hotel's supporting facilities are also quite complete, and the children had a lot of fun. The equipment in the gym is new and diverse, meeting my daily exercise needs. The catering is even better. The breakfast is rich and varied, from local snacks to Western cakes, each one is delicious. The restaurant environment is also very elegant, the waiters are warm and polite, and the dining experience is excellent. This stay left us with a deep and wonderful impression, both in terms of service and facilities. Next time we travel, this hotel will definitely be our first choice, and we also recommend it to friends who are looking for high-quality accommodation!

Tucked away on the hillside of Baofeng Mountain, this guesthouse truly lives up to its name as a secluded mountain retreat, occupying its own valley, completely free from the hustle and bustle of traffic and crowds. The overall design is rustic and natural, with the architecture seamlessly blending into the mountain landscape, devoid of any overly commercialized, deliberate embellishments. The owner, a designer who returned from Shanghai, runs the guesthouse with a relaxed and laid-back aesthetic, not driven by a commercial mindset. Every corner reveals subtle artistic touches, and the entire place exudes a strong personal warmth. I had a long, in-depth conversation with the owner late into the night about spatial design and the philosophy behind creating a mountain retreat. It offered profound insights that went far beyond a typical accommodation experience. The guest rooms boast large open-air viewing balconies that open up to an endless expanse of the Wuling Mountains, offering direct, breathtaking panoramic views of Tianzi Mountain. The room was quiet and healing, and the tranquil mountain atmosphere allowed me to completely shed the tension of city life. It truly is a rare therapeutic space where one can find emotional solace. The meals are authentic Tujia local flavors. I highly recommend the bamboo shoot stew with cured pork. The cured pork was generous in portion and quality, with a pure and genuine smoky flavor. All ingredients tasted as if they were fresh from the mountains. The owner even gifted us a few extra local home-style dishes, which perfectly suited our taste – simple yet thoughtfully prepared. At 6:30 AM, I set off from the guesthouse to hike up to the Baofeng Mountain temple. The empty mountain was serene, allowing me to slowly experience inner cultivation and a state of mind free from external pursuits. The spiritual gains from this mountain retreat far surpassed the beauty of the scenery itself. In Zhangjiajie, where formulaic, 'influencer-style' guesthouses are ubiquitous, Dayong Secluded Haven is one of the very few that stays true to its essence, offering a top-tier experience with both aesthetic appeal and genuine warmth. It's not just a place to stay; it's more like a spiritual sanctuary nestled in the mountains, a refuge from worldly noise that truly allows you to quiet your mind and converse with yourself. This trip was truly unforgettable, and I will definitely return.

This was a very relaxing and enjoyable four-day trip, and Xiya Hotel really added to the experience. Among all the accommodations in Zhangjiajie, Xiya was by far the most satisfying. The guesthouse is ideally located, very close to the South Gate of the Forest Park, making access to the scenic area incredibly convenient. The rooms are clean, spacious, and very comfortable. The window view overlooks the mountains of Zhangjiajie, and it’s especially beautiful to see the clouds and mist in the mornings and evenings. The owner and staff are exceptionally warm and welcoming. They proactively helped with arrangements and provided detailed information both before and after check-in, including very clear directions to the scenic spots. This was especially helpful for first-time visitors to Zhangjiajie. Their advice during our days of touring was incredibly practical and saved us a lot of time on planning. The owner even created a personalized tour map and itinerary, which clearly shows their dedication. The breakfast was also good, and the overall service felt very warm and genuine, not commercialized at all. After a long day of sightseeing, returning to the guesthouse and sitting in the courtyard, admiring the mountain views and feeling the breeze, was truly relaxing. After staying in Zhangjiajie for several days, Xiya definitely stood out as an excellent choice. If I return to Zhangjiajie in the future, I would likely choose to stay here again. Highly recommended!

We stayed for 4 days , our room was clean and very comfortable. We had not organised ourselves very well , but Tim organised and book our tickets for the Forest park , the Tianamen mts and the Canyon. We were given good advice when to start our day . The hotel has a great breakfast and laundry . We had a sl problem with a Didi payment and Robert immediately sorted the payment . It was great to have so many English speaking staff. Chelsea from the front desk was helpful with everything right down to providing umbrellas. The proximity to the park and peaceful surrounds makes this hotel feel like a home away from home . A phone call to the hotel was answered by Tim and my request to book my tickets was done even before we arrived. Service at that level is priceless. We thank the team for making our stay soo comfortable. The score I give is 20 out of ten .we requested a tour guide for the day and Sasa was the English speaking guide excellent knowledge .

This was our first stop in Zhangjiajie, and the hotel's location is super convenient, right on Wuling Road, very close to the East Gate – just a few minutes away. There are plenty of restaurants and supermarkets behind and to the left of the hotel, offering a great selection of local specialties. Across the road is a river, perfect for a stroll along the bank in the mornings and evenings; the gentle breeze is really pleasant. At night, the lights along the river are beautiful, and sometimes there are drone shows, which you can even see from the hotel. All the rooms have balconies with plenty of hangers, so you can easily dry clothes or just relax and sit outside. The hotel staff are very service-oriented; if you call the front desk for water or towels, they respond really quickly. All the front desk staff are very friendly, especially a young man surnamed Li – he's very clever and has a great attitude. It's definitely worth coming back here again.

Miss Wendy (who is the front desk manager and looks like the only one who spoke English) was exceptional—friendly, attentive, and incredibly proactive. Wendy anticipated our needs, provided helpful local recommendations, allowed us to choose the room we preferred, and even helped us to select tickets to the national park without any hassle. The room had a fantastic view of the mountains, which made the stay feel very special. Breakfast was outstanding—easily a 10/10—with a wide selection and a beautiful view from the restaurant. The location is also a major plus: very close to the train station and extremely convenient for both the airport and train stations. As an added bonus, there is restaurants nearby, creating a lively and enjoyable atmosphere in the evenings. We would absolutely stay here again and highly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Zhangjiajie. Because of the Wendy we extended our trip in this hotel for another week.

The service was amazing, they offer to take you to and to bring you back from the park for free, additionally to the airport free drop off. The room was clean and in a mountain-style with exposed beams. Breakfast was so-so, but they do their best to accommodate guests. Noodles are custom made. Overall good value for money in a very busy touristy place.
