Old Beijing Walking Guide: Qianmen Street, the Hutongs, Shichahai and 798 Art District on Foot

Old Beijing is not one place. It is a handful of grey-brick neighbourhoods within four metro stops of each other, plus a factory district that turned into an art quarter. Walk the old city in an afternoon, then give 798 its own morning. Bring a passport, a phone with Alipay and about RM200 in cash.

Visa-free entry: 30 days and one arrival card

Malaysians have entered China visa-free since 17 July 2025. The exemption gives 30 days per entry and 90 days inside any 180-day window, with the agreement running to 2030. Your passport needs six months left. First-time visitors give fingerprints at immigration, which takes a minute.

The China arrival card is the only form. Fill it at s.nia.gov.cn within 72 hours of landing, or take the paper card handed out on the plane. KLIA flights land at Daxing in about six hours. Beijing keeps Malaysia's clock, so there is no jet lag.

Weather and month: the eight weeks when this walk works

Beijing is dry, and January is sharp. The month averages 2.4°C by day and -8.9°C at night, while July reaches 31.8°C with 170mm of rain. October averages 19.4°C by day with 25mm of rain, which is why it wins.

Two windows suit a walking trip: mid-April to mid-May, and mid-September to mid-October. Autumn is better. Skies clear, ginkgo turns yellow, and by 26 October the sun is down at 17:20, putting the lakeshore in gold light from five. Spring dust and winter smog are the trade-offs.

Payment and apps: what works on a hutong lane

Alipay and WeChat Pay both take Malaysian Visa and Mastercard. Payments up to ¥200 carry no fee; above that the issuer takes 3%. Touch 'n Go eWallet runs through Alipay+ once you finish eKYC, and it debits ringgit directly.

The metro is simpler. Every gate has taken Visa and Mastercard since September 2024, and JCB and Amex joined in June 2025. Tap the card and skip the ticket machine; fares run ¥3 to ¥6.

Cash still matters. Plenty of hutong stalls use personal QR codes, which cannot take foreign cards by regulation. Carry ¥200 to ¥300 in small notes.

Passport as ticket: the release windows that decide your day

Beijing runs on real-name booking, and your passport is the ticket. Zhengyangmen Gate Tower reopened on 27 July 2026 at ¥20, Tuesday to Sunday, 9:00 to 17:00, closed Mondays. Tickets drop daily at 17:00 on the Central Axis WeChat account.

The Forbidden City releases tickets seven days ahead at 20:00 Beijing time. No window sells them on site. Peak price is ¥60, winter ¥40, and the palace closes every Monday. Enter at the Meridian Gate and scan the passport itself.

Tiananmen Square is free, but it wants a timed reservation one to seven days out. Qianmen, Nanluoguxiang, Shichahai and 798 need nothing. Keep Monday for those four.

Qianmen Street: 845 metres from the arrow tower to Zhushikou

Qianmen Street Beijing runs 845 metres from the Zhengyangmen Arrow Tower south to Zhushikou. The street dates to the Ming dynasty, and the pedestrian rebuild opened in 2008.

Ride the tram once. The Dangdang car costs ¥50 for a 90-second run along the whole street. It operates 08:30 to 22:00 in summer, 09:00 to 21:00 in winter. Then turn west.

Dashilan is 275 metres of narrower lane with the real old shops: Tongrentang apothecary from 1669, Ruifuxiang silk and Neiliansheng cloth shoes. Yueshengzhai, a halal beef shop, has traded since 1775. Xianyukou, east of the main street, is the snack lane. Quanjude has roasted duck at No. 30 since 1864. Entry is free, the street never closes, and Metro Line 2 or 8 puts you within 200 metres of either end.

The hutongs: Nanluoguxiang and the eight lanes either side

A beijing hutong is a lane between courtyard houses. About 1,000 named ones survive, down from more than 3,000 in the 1950s, when the city began pulling whole courtyards down for new roads. Search hutong beijing and the free lanes outnumber the ticketed courtyards.

Nanluoguxiang Beijing is the famous one. It runs 786 metres, measures 8 metres across, and was laid out in 1267. Sixteen side lanes still branch off in a fishbone, eight east and eight west, which earned it the nickname Centipede Street.

It is free, open all night, and now a shopping street. Go before 10:00 or after 20:00. Then leave the main lane and walk into the quiet side hutongs for an hour. Mao'er Hutong holds the last empress's family house, and Yu'er Hutong has Qi Baishi's old courtyard. Ju'er Hutong shows the 1990s brick rebuild that won a UN award. Ignore the rickshaw men who quote ¥30 and then demand ¥300 at the end of the ride. Metro Line 6 or 8 to Nanluoguxiang, Exit E, surfaces 20 metres from the lane.

Shichahai: 147 hectares, three lakes and one silver bridge

Shichahai Beijing covers 147 hectares across three linked lakes: Qianhai, Houhai and Xihai. In the Yuan dynasty this was the northern end of the Grand Canal.

Walk west from Nanluoguxiang for 20 minutes to the Yinding Bridge, a stone arch with the best sunset view in the old city. Cross it and the Houhai bar strip begins, loud after 21:00. Two sights charge. Prince Gong's Mansion costs ¥40 from April to October, ¥30 from November to March, and closes Mondays with last entry at 16:10. The Drum and Bell Towers sell a joint ticket at ¥30, open 09:30 to 17:30 in peak season. Climb the Drum Tower for the roofscape. Metro Line 8, Shichahai Exit A.

798 Art District: the factory, the museums and the Monday trap

798 art district beijing is free and open around the clock. The site covers 640,000 square metres of the old 718 Joint Factory, built with East German help from 1954. Sawtooth roofs, north-facing windows and Bauhaus lines survived because artists moved into the empty halls around 2000, when rent in a dead factory cost almost nothing.

Most galleries open 10:00 to 18:00 and close Mondays. Search 798 museum beijing and two names come up. UCCA, at No. 4 Jiuxianqiao Road, opens Tuesday to Sunday 10:00 to 19:00 and charges about ¥100. M WOODS, at D-06, opens 11:00 to 19:00 and also shuts Monday.

Metro Line 14 to Wangjing South. Line 12 to Gaojiayuan is closer if your map shows it open. A DiDi from Shichahai takes 30 to 40 minutes.

Halal food and prayer: where to stop between the lanes

Two mosques serve this route. Qianmen Mosque hides in Qudeng Hutong, two minutes behind the street. Dongsi Mosque at No. 13 Dongsi South Street is larger, free, open 09:00 to 17:00, and holds 500 people inside a hall built in 1356. Niujie Mosque is closed for renovation until late 2027, but Niujie street, three kilometres west of Qianmen, still runs halal butchers, bakeries and restaurants.

On 26 October 2026, Beijing prayer times are Fajr 05:21, Dhuhr 11:58, Asr 14:56, Maghrib 17:20 and Isha 18:35, so plan the lakeshore walk around Maghrib and dinner after Isha. Dongsi shuts at 17:00, so Maghrib belongs to Qianmen Mosque or your hotel. Look for the green 清真 sign, not the English word. 798 has no mosque and very little halal food, so eat a proper meal before you go.

What the walk costs, in ringgit

The rate on 23 October 2026 was 1 CNY to RM0.6125, so ¥100 is about RM61. Metro rides cost RM1.80 to RM3.70. The tram is RM31, Zhengyangmen RM12, the Forbidden City RM37, the Drum and Bell Towers RM18 and Prince Gong RM25. Halal beef noodles run ¥25 to ¥35, or RM15 to RM21 a bowl. A Niujie hotpot dinner lands at RM49 to RM74. A courtyard room in the hutong belt starts near ¥250, or RM153, and passes RM300 in autumn.

Return flights from KLIA start near RM954 on AirAsia X or Malaysia Airlines. Two days of metro, tickets, food and coffee add RM350 to RM600.

The route: one afternoon in the old city, one morning in 798

Start at 08:00 at the north end of Qianmen, before shops open and tour groups arrive. Walk south, take Dashilan and Xianyukou at 10:00, and eat at 11:30.

At 13:00, ride Metro Line 8 from Qianmen to Nanluoguxiang, four stops and about 12 minutes with no transfer. Walk the lane and two side hutongs until 15:00, then head west on foot to Shichahai, 1.2 kilometres away. Reach Yinding Bridge by 16:00.

Stay for the 17:20 sunset, pray Maghrib, and eat around Houhai. Give 798 the next morning, when galleries open at 10:00. A Monday visit wastes the trip.
