Route A, B or C? The Tianmen Mountain Cable Car Guide Malaysians Need Right Now

Gambar Profil Penulis

On 13 October 2026 the Tianmen Mountain cableway stopped carrying passengers. The 7,455 m line that lifted people from downtown Zhangjiajie into the clouds is closed for a rebuild, and one route now serves the whole mountain. Every itinerary written before October is wrong.

What changed at Tianmen Mountain on 13 October 2026

A scenic area notice dated 10 October 2026 says the full cableway stops carrying passengers from 13 October, with the work tied to the new lower-station complex. Route C, the round-trip line, stays open.

The free shuttle between the downtown lower station and the mountain gate still runs, and the lower station keeps its ticket window and service desk. Sales start at 07:30, the first cabins move at 08:00, and the gate closes to new arrivals at 16:00.

Routes A, B and the one-way lines 1 and 2 are suspended, and no reopening date has been published. Call 0744-8366666 on the day you travel.

Route A vs route B vs route C: the comparison that matters

Every route costs ¥288. The difference was the order of the transport, and in peak season that order decided whether you spent the morning on the mountain or in a queue.

Route

Status

Down the mountain

Who it suited

A

Suspended

Cableway to mid-station, shuttle up the 99 bends

B

C

Route C is the mountain now. The comparison still matters, because operators keep selling A and B tickets for future dates.

Route A, step by step

Route A started with the ride people came for. You boarded downtown on Dayong Road, rode the lower half of the 7,455 m cableway to the mid-station, then took a shuttle up Tongtian Avenue.

That road is 10.77 km with 99 hairpins, and the bus takes 25 to 30 minutes. At Tianmen Cave plaza you climbed the 999 steps to the cave mouth or paid ¥32 for the five-segment lower escalator. Then came the seven-stage escalator to the summit.

You reversed that escalator after the summit loop, left by the Tianmen Cave express cableway to the mountain gate, and took a free shuttle back downtown. The morning queue there ran two to three hours in peak season.

Route B, step by step

Route B ran the same day in reverse, and it was the better half of the pair. A free shuttle moved you from the downtown lower station to the mountain gate in about 15 minutes.

You entered at the gate and rode the express cableway to Tianmen Cave, which beats the Route A morning queue at the ticket hall. The return leg gave you a choice: shuttle down the 99 bends to the mid-station and finish on the main cableway into the city, or ride the express cableway back to the gate.

Its selling point was queueing. The express cableway carries 26 people per cabin and clears crowds faster than the older line.

Route C, step by step: the route running today

This is the one to plan around. You enter at the mountain gate, ride the Tianmen Cave express cableway up in five to seven minutes, and climb the seven-stage escalator to the summit. You walk the summit, come back down the escalator, and the express cableway returns you to the gate.

The C ticket covers the express cableway and the upper seven-stage escalator in both directions. It does not cover the lower escalator beside the 999 steps. Going up, that escalator costs ¥32, and coming down it is free of charge.

Two things are missing from a Route C day. There is no ride on the long cableway, and no crossing of the 99 bends road. For the rest of 2026 that is the trade.

Glass skywalk shoe covers cost ¥5 per walkway, and the summit forest cable car is ¥25. Booking opens on the official WeChat mini program, or you can book the Tianmen Mountain ticket on Trip.com in ringgit with a foreign card.

Prices rose by ¥10 in November 2025, so ignore the ¥278 quoted online. Tickets release 15 days ahead, and the daily cap is about 35,000 people. Refunds changed for visits after 19 May 2026: the ticket dies at 17:00 on your visit day.

Getting there: city, airport and Malaysia

The downtown cableway lower station sits on Dayong Road in Yongding District. From Zhangjiajie West railway station a taxi takes 15 to 20 minutes and costs ¥15 to ¥30, and buses 4, 5 and 6 charge ¥1 to ¥2.

From Malaysia the direct route is Kuala Lumpur to Zhangjiajie Hehua on AirAsia or Batik Air, about 4 hours 45 minutes, three to four times weekly, RM600 to RM1,400 return. The fly-and-rail version goes KUL to Changsha, then Changsha to Zhangjiajie by high-speed train in about 2 hours, with second class seats from about RM32. Our Zhangjiajie hotel guide compares the areas worth sleeping in.

The China arrival card for Malaysian passports

Malaysians enter China visa-free for up to 30 days, and that has been true since 17 July 2025. Visa-free does not mean paperwork-free. Every foreign arrival, Malaysians included, files a China Digital Arrival Card before landing.

The official form sits at s.nia.gov.cn/ArrivalCardFillingPC/ and costs nothing, and the Immigration Bureau 12367 app reaches the same form. The window opens 72 hours before arrival, so fill it the day before you fly.

Have four things ready: passport details, arrival flight number, your address in China in English and Chinese, and your recent travel history. Submit it and you get a QR code, which an officer scans at immigration. Screenshot that code onto your phone.

Seven groups skip the card, including permanent resident card holders, group visa travellers, people in 24-hour direct transit who stay inside the port area, and transport crew. First-time visitors also give fingerprints at the border. The Trip.com guide to the China arrival card has the full walkthrough.

Summit routes, glass walkways and weather closures

The summit splits into a west loop of about 4 km, an east loop of about 3.5 km and a central area of about 1 km. Walk west first, because the Coiling Dragon Cliff skywalk and Ghost Valley plank road sit there.

The 100 m Coiling Dragon walkway hangs 1.5 m wide over the 99 bends road. Three glass walkways exist, each needing a ¥5 cover.

The 999 steps climb from the cave plaza at 1,050 m to Tianmen Cave at 1,170 m. That is 218 vertical metres over five flatter sections and four steep ones, and going down takes 20 to 30 minutes while the climb up runs 30 to 45.

Ice or heavy rain changes everything. The park can shut the shuttle between the mid-station and Tianmen Cave, and it announces those decisions by 08:00. Spring and autumn give the clearest skies, and the summit runs 5 to 8°C colder than Zhangjiajie city

The bottom line

Route C is the only bookable route until the cableway reopens, and the ¥288 ticket still buys the cave, the 999 steps, the escalators and the glass walkways. Our Tianmen Mountain travel guide covers the summit in more depth.
