How to Get to Pulau Tioman by Land

The first step to getting to Pulau Tioman is to reach one of the two main gateways to the island: Mersing or Tanjung Gemok. These are two coastal towns in Johor and Pahang states respectively, where you can catch a ferry to Pulau Tioman.

You can get to Mersing or Tanjung Gemok by bus, car, or taxi from Kuala Lumpur or Singapore. The distance from Kuala Lumpur to Mersing is about 350 km, while the distance from Kuala Lumpur to Tanjung Gemok is about 400 km. The distance from Singapore to Mersing is about 200 km, while the distance from Singapore to Tanjung Gemok is about 250 km.

The travel time from Kuala Lumpur or Singapore to Mersing or Tanjung Gemok depends on the traffic conditions and the mode of transportation. Generally speaking, it takes about 4-5 hours by bus or car, and about 3-4 hours by taxi.

But which gateway should you choose: Mersing or Tanjung Gemok? Here are some pros and cons of each option:

Mersing

- Pros: Closer to Kuala Lumpur and Singapore; more bus options; more ferry options; more accommodation options; more attractions nearby (e.g., Endau Rompin National Park)

- Cons: More crowded; more traffic jams; more affected by tides; less reliable ferry schedule; longer ferry ride

Tanjung Gemok

- Pros: Less crowded; less traffic jams; less affected by tides; more reliable ferry schedule; shorter ferry ride

- Cons: Further from Kuala Lumpur and Singapore; fewer bus options; fewer ferry options; fewer accommodation options; fewer attractions nearby

As you can see, there is no clear winner between Mersing and Tanjung Gemok. It depends on your personal preferences and budget. However, we recommend Tanjung Gemok as the better option for most travelers because it offers a smoother and faster ferry experience.

Here are some tips on how to book a bus or taxi to Mersing or Tanjung Gemok:

- You can book your bus tickets online through platforms like CatchThatBus.com or RedBus.my. You can compare prices, schedules, and reviews of different bus operators and choose the one that suits you best.

- You can book your taxi online through platforms like Grab or MyCar. You can also book a private transfer service through various online platforms.

The next step to getting to Pulau Tioman is to take a ferry from Mersing or Tanjung Gemok. There are two main ferry operators that serve Pulau Tioman: Bluewater Express and Cataferry. Both operators offer fast and comfortable ferries that can accommodate up to 200 passengers.

The ferry ride from Mersing or Tanjung Gemok to Pulau Tioman takes about 1.5-2 hours, depending on the weather conditions and the number of stops. The ferry stops at several villages or resorts on the island where you can choose your destination according to your accommodation or preference.

Here are some pros and cons of each ferry operator:

Bluewater Express

- Pros: More frequent; more flexible; cheaper; more experienced

- Cons: Older; smaller; noisier; less comfortable

Cataferry

- Pros: Newer; bigger; quieter; more comfortable

- Cons: Less frequent; less flexible; more expensive; less experienced

Again, there is no clear winner between Bluewater Express and Cataferry. It depends on your personal preferences and budget. However, we recommend Cataferry as the better option for most travelers because it offers a more pleasant and spacious ferry experience.

The resort has everything you need — meal options are buffet, grill, BBQ, and fried dishes with excellent wok hei. It also offers a spa, dive centre, mini mart, and an activity centre that arranges snorkeling, trekking, kayaking, and more. Right in front of the resort is a clean, beautiful beach, and Tomok Island is just a short walk away for snorkeling.

We chose Japamala Tioman for our wedding anniversary and this boutique resort did not disappoint. Service was impeccable from the time we were picked up at the ferry terminal at Kampung Genting until the time we left. Kudos to the manger Kenny and his team for their hospitality in making our anniversary memorable. Food was in general above average (dessert was fantastic) and some dishes were a bit salty as we don’t consume too salty food in our diet. We gave feedback and to our surprise the staff took it seriously as our subsequent dishes served weren’t as salty. The rooms are clean and the sea view fantastic, allowing us to take in the magnificent sunset views every evening. Not much to do, as this resort is more for guest to disconnect. Hiking to Batu Permata and to Kampung Genting was doable. Canoeing and snorkelling by the resort was great. Overall we enjoyed our stay there. Thanks Japamala!

Great environment. Relaxing and doable. Great Sunrise except for occasional overcast. The beach is white. The size of the room is comfortable. Beds are big. The deluxe room has a small balcony which leads to the swimming pool and dining hall. The room is not the cleanest. Saw some baby cockroaches running around the bathroom. The pillows are way too soft. The Aircon power is very weak Occasional power trips. There are a few dive shops along the way. Good selection for divers who wants different experience diving around Juara. Food prices are average. There is a roti canai shop mia cafe. Which sells out out very quickly. Be on time at 7am if you want to try it.

The hotel owner is Chinese, so domestic friends don’t have to worry about language communication problems. The hotel environment is very good. I personally like nature and virgin forests. This hotel meets my requirements. It’s the most primitive feeling when you come out to play. The cabins are unique and I like it very much. It’s not far from the pier. There is a duty-free shop at the end of the pier. Similar to small shops in China, Tioman Island is duty-free Island, you can book a BBQ with the hotel owner. Breakfast is toast, nasi lemak, tea, and coffee. The hotel is not a five-star hotel. Those who mind are careful

A Great Stay at Berjaya Tioman Resort We had a wonderful experience during our stay at Berjaya Tioman Resort. We booked two rooms and were pleasantly surprised to receive connecting rooms, which made our stay much more convenient and comfortable especially for families. The rooms were spacious, clean, and well-maintained, offering a relaxing atmosphere after a day of exploring the island. One unexpected perk was that can drinks in the hotel were complimentary, which was a nice touch and added to the overall value of the stay. Breakfast offered a variety of food selections, catering to different tastes. While the spread was decent, the taste could be improved to better match the quality of the rest of the resort experience. Overall, Berjaya Tioman Resort provided a comfortable and enjoyable stay, and we would definitely consider returning in the future.

Amma make this one short, The place is nice, staff were amazing, food could be alot better i mean depedns its almost all Asian. For all coming to visit, this place is more like a romantic trip than a family vacay. The beach is very bad TBH its all rocky, no beach front that you can actually lay on and enjoy the dash o'water The closest lets say snorkelling requires a package purchase or if you know a sea taxi, as relying on this beach's marine life its sad, dead coral everywhere.

My family had a nice stay at TDR. It lived up to our expectations and MORE. I am writing because I would like to commend the resort for their help in locating my missing backpack (left at the ferry jetty). When we realised we were missing an important bag (dont ask how, things happen i guess) we called the resort and asked the help from the staff to check if we did leave our bag at the jetty which was a 10 minutes-walk away from the resort. They immediately went to check but the bag was not there. It seemed that TDR didn’t just leave the matter at that, and I dont know how they managed it, but 6.5 hrs later they called to inform me that the bag was on another ferry on its way to a different jetty 30 minutes away from us on the mainland. Kudos to the Bluewater ferry service for picking up the abandoned bag and sent it to their office albeit at a different nearby location. Again, I dont know how but i am so glad that TDR was able to get that information and relayed it back to us. After more than 8 hours of despair, with God’s will, we got back our bag with the help of the staff of the resort, the staff of the Bluewater ferry service and possibly the networking within the small island. Thank you so much for the help TDR. Thank you for making this a really memorable trip with a happy ending.

On September 22, we checked in at Juara Ocean Chalet around 2 p.m. and spent a relaxing afternoon by the beach, enjoying the peaceful island atmosphere. In the evening, we had a delicious seafood dinner at a local restaurant, featuring fresh fish and prawns. The next morning, my child and I joined an exciting boat trip covering five snorkeling spots, where we saw colorful coral reefs and tropical fish. After returning to shore, we enjoyed a simple yet flavorful Malay lunch and relaxed by the sea for the rest of the day.

If you think to take a hotel or not, take it without thinking! Very welcoming staff, everything will tell, will show. Good breakfast on the type of Swedish table. To the ocean 1 minute. Harbour in step availability. If you want to snorkelling, go to the left to the stones and study the underwater world. The hosts gave a kayaking at a very attractive price for a day. The houses are comfortable with air conditioning. The bed is comfortable. But there are no glasses in the windows in the houses. Only wooden stands. Accordingly, they are not open with the air conditioner without which it is very hot. Prepare to live with the light on constantly. There was a tree over the house, from which occasionally something fell on the roof with a thunder. But it was rare. And so it was very much like!
