The lovely island paradise in our home country~

How to Get to Pulau Tioman by Land

The first step to getting to Pulau Tioman is to reach one of the two main gateways to the island: Mersing or Tanjung Gemok. These are two coastal towns in Johor and Pahang states respectively, where you can catch a ferry to Pulau Tioman.

You can get to Mersing or Tanjung Gemok by bus, car, or taxi from Kuala Lumpur or Singapore. The distance from Kuala Lumpur to Mersing is about 350 km, while the distance from Kuala Lumpur to Tanjung Gemok is about 400 km. The distance from Singapore to Mersing is about 200 km, while the distance from Singapore to Tanjung Gemok is about 250 km.

The travel time from Kuala Lumpur or Singapore to Mersing or Tanjung Gemok depends on the traffic conditions and the mode of transportation. Generally speaking, it takes about 4-5 hours by bus or car, and about 3-4 hours by taxi.

But which gateway should you choose: Mersing or Tanjung Gemok? Here are some pros and cons of each option:

Mersing

- Pros: Closer to Kuala Lumpur and Singapore; more bus options; more ferry options; more accommodation options; more attractions nearby (e.g., Endau Rompin National Park)

- Cons: More crowded; more traffic jams; more affected by tides; less reliable ferry schedule; longer ferry ride

Tanjung Gemok

- Pros: Less crowded; less traffic jams; less affected by tides; more reliable ferry schedule; shorter ferry ride

- Cons: Further from Kuala Lumpur and Singapore; fewer bus options; fewer ferry options; fewer accommodation options; fewer attractions nearby

As you can see, there is no clear winner between Mersing and Tanjung Gemok. It depends on your personal preferences and budget. However, we recommend Tanjung Gemok as the better option for most travelers because it offers a smoother and faster ferry experience.

Here are some tips on how to book a bus or taxi to Mersing or Tanjung Gemok:

- You can book your bus tickets online through platforms like CatchThatBus.com or RedBus.my. You can compare prices, schedules, and reviews of different bus operators and choose the one that suits you best.

- You can book your taxi online through platforms like Grab or MyCar. You can also book a private transfer service through various online platforms.

- You can also book your bus or taxi tickets offline at various terminals or counters in Kuala Lumpur or Singapore. However, this may be more expensive and less convenient than booking online.

How to Get to Pulau Tioman by Sea

The next step to getting to Pulau Tioman is to take a ferry from Mersing or Tanjung Gemok. There are two main ferry operators that serve Pulau Tioman: Bluewater Express and Cataferry. Both operators offer fast and comfortable ferries that can accommodate up to 200 passengers.

The ferry ride from Mersing or Tanjung Gemok to Pulau Tioman takes about 1.5-2 hours, depending on the weather conditions and the number of stops. The ferry stops at several villages or resorts on the island where you can choose your destination according to your accommodation or preference.

Here are some pros and cons of each ferry operator:

Bluewater Express

- Pros: More frequent; more flexible; cheaper; more experienced

- Cons: Older; smaller; noisier; less comfortable

Cataferry

- Pros: Newer; bigger; quieter; more comfortable

- Cons: Less frequent; less flexible; more expensive; less experienced

Again, there is no clear winner between Bluewater Express and Cataferry. It depends on your personal preferences and budget. However, we recommend Cataferry as the better option for most travelers because it offers a more pleasant and spacious ferry experience.

Berjaya Air operates a small fleet of Dash 7 aircraft that can carry up to 48 passengers. The flight from Kuala Lumpur to Pulau Tioman takes about one hour, depending on the weather conditions. The flight lands at Tekek Airport, which is the only airport on the island.

We have booked a fullboard 4D3N fullboard pool view superior room stay which includes 1 lunch, 2 dinner, 3 breakfast and snorkelling trip to pulau renggis and marine park. As our stay was during the school holiday, the resort was packed with big groups of families and company trip. It was not what we imagine to be a couple retreat. Food was ok however it was the same menu daily during breakfast. This is our first trip to Paya. The room is big in size however we do have issue with the shower where the water flow is so small. We do enjoy the beach view in front of the resort and the sunset.

We came here just when its safe to be here and ferry transport is available. Unfortunately, we are at the tail of monsoon season. The place is alreafy packed with tourists, but, once mosts of them left, we had the place to ourselves. The place is old, but clean and spacious with all the amenities available. The staffs are warm, helpful and welcoming. The food has many varieties and quite palatable. Hopefully, can improve on that. Managed to eat the oxtail, wow, the senses jumped to the roof.. very very very spicy and delicious. I wished that the playground is kept well for the kids to play. Did not managed to swim, coz, it rained all day and we had swim enough in the ocean. Defitely, we will come back here and recommend others to come here as well.

Artritis reumatoid

I initially tried to book a package over 3mths in advance via their website unsuccessfully. I had to book via *********** which offered no packages hence, I had to pay more for my stay. The day before my check in I tried to arrange a pickup from Telek Marina jetty. Tried the number on Google no good. Tried the number on their website no good. Tried messaging via ***********. They received my messages but I wasn't able to read their text replies. Fortunately, Tioman Dive Resort messaged them via Whatsapp (which I don't use) and successfully arranged a pickup for me. They forewent the minimum 2pax pickup rule so credit there. The reception staff were friendly and helpful. They arranged my transfer to the jetty as well as my boat ticket. I don't think I was done any favours on my roon allocation even though I had booked over 3mths in advance. I was shown to my room and I asked does the tv work and she replied yes. My room was large and clean with a sofa, hanging space and plenty of shelving to lay clothes etc. The aircon, ceiling fan, fridge and tv all worked fine. Though with the tv I could only get no signal. A walk back to reception to be told there are no channels and given a box loaded with movies to plug in to the back of the tv. The bed had clean linens and provided a confortable sleep. With so many rooms in close proximity I was invariably woken by loud mouth people. The toilet and the shower were two seperate rooms each with their own basin. The shower had hot water and good pressure. The porch had a table and two chairs. Room cleaning was upon request. The restaurant food was okay. Some say a bit expensive but prices on any island a more expensive than on the mainland. Concerned people should do what most Malays do and cart your own food to an island then you won't have to whine. I did find getting the attention of service staff rather challenging. The food came in good time but then there were few customers. They offer activities luke boat trips etc. Also have a desk for spa services which are the most expensive in SEA. For example, in Thailand where I live I pay the equivalent of MYR42 for a 1 hour body massage. At The Barat this same service is MYR169. I did indulge myself to a 30min foot massage for MYR60 as I really needed it. I did not use the pool but it looked well maintained. It is also used for diver training. Sunloungers on the beach with shade constructions. Overall, putting aside my booking and communication frustrations I enjoyed my stay at The Barat.

Though it was my second visit barely after a month, I'm disappointed with the service rendered. Firstly during reservations requested to assist for the room on the first floor however this was not given. Secondly no housekeeping throughout the stay. But felt at least have a change of towels. But housekeeping was just too busy. Thirdly, the sound proofing of the resort is poor. U can literally hear footsteps and conversation when your next door neighbour walks and speaks Fourthly, Resort wanted to charge for a misplaced key card. Though it is RM20 but I do not feel this is necessary. Most of the hotels would even encourage the guest to keep the key card as a memento/souvenir as it promotes the hotel's branding Lastly was charged for bedsheets laundry. As mentioned no housekeeping service for four days, definitely the bedsheets were not changed and will be dirty. Resort claim my bedsheets have some stains which I am unsure if it was from the previous guests. Anyway I do not wish to argue and pay for the cleaning charges. I would not be returning to Aman Resort Tioman again. I just felt that the hotel is finding ways to make guests pay extra to make additional revenue. Besides the service and hardware of the resort, nothing impressive From Dissatisfied Guest

I have asthma, it's been hell. 1. I'm staying in the Deluxe Ocean View Room, and it fills with the smoke and the smell of burning trash and melting plastic every evening after 7, and continues until perhaps 1 AM. The building is sat at the lowest point on the beach in front of a sort of trash-filled depression that flows into the ocean at monsoon season (check the photo), and all the resorts burn their trash close by, and all the smoke pools into this room because the air conditioner has a big hole through to the outside wall, and the sliding glass doors have big whistling gaps. The small bathroom box fan does not help. I've already had a serious asthma attack, it's literally dangerous. 2. I had to leave the snorkeling tour early because despite asking multiple times how many people were going (they said 4; it was 20) and if it was nonsmoking (they said yes, it's nonsmoking when i bought the ticket, and again before i stepped on the boat), 3/3 staff members unapologetically smoked or vaped in my face the entire time, and taking their cue as permission, 3 guests started vaping and another 3 smoking, making it miserable for me, so i demanded to be dropped off at the next jetty. 3. A nonsmoking room just means you personally happen to not be smoking in it at this very moment. All the rooms are smoking, and almost all the customers here smoke, many of them the incredibly strong local stuff that's illegal in other countries and makes anyone in a 300m circumference think there's a brush fire nearby. instead of trying to curb this damage to their property (not to mention health hazard), they sell a large variety of these cigs at their minimart. just one kind of fruit per day, but 12 types of cigs! the garden is littered with literally thousands of cigarette butts they've never cleaned, again, just check the photo- that was just the 2 square meters in front of my cottage, multiply it by 20,000 . . . I have spent 5 years traveling in SE Asia, I realize people here don't believe air pollution, secondhand smoke, and lung disease are real. I always travel with 2 air purifiers, I'm always upfront about finding solutions with hotel staff . . . this place was hell and their constant gaslighting abominable.
