Hi friends! 👋I just got back from Taiwan – and wow, I'm still buzzing from all the shopping! 😆 Whether it's beauty products, local snacks, or cute gadgets, Taiwan is truly a shopper’s paradise. But here’s something many tourists might not know: you can actually get a tax refund on many of your purchases! It’s part of Taiwan’s Tax Refund Program, and trust me, the savings really do add up.

Let me guide you through everything you need to know – from how the VAT system works to how you can claim your refund like a pro. Grab your phone or a notepad, because this guide might just save you some serious New Taiwan Dollars! 💴💡

🧾 Tax Refund and Exemption in Taiwan

In Taiwan, you’ll often see price tags that include a 5% Value-Added Tax (VAT), which is applied to most goods and services.

But here’s the good news: International tourists are eligible for a tax refund on eligible purchases made at designated Tax Refund Shops. 🙌

This means:

🍜 More budget for your next bowl of beef noodles
💆‍♀️ More skincare from Taiwanese brands like My Beauty Diary and Dr. Wu
🎁 And more adorable souvenirs to bring home for family and friends

Just look for stores displaying the “Tax Refund Shopping” logo when you shop!

💡 Value-Added Tax (VAT) in Taiwan

TAIPEI101

Taiwan’s Value-Added Tax (VAT) is currently 5%, and it applies to most retail items, including:

👗 Fashion & apparel
💻 Electronics & gadgets
💄 Beauty products & skincare
🍫 Snacks & packaged food
🧃 Non-alcoholic drinks

You might not notice it immediately, but the tax can add up quickly—especially if you’re shopping in popular areas like Ximending, Taipei Main Station, or department stores across the city.

🧠 Tip: Always check whether prices are tax-included or tax-excluded. Some stores display both, so be sure to confirm before you pay.

📜 The Current Tax Refund System – What’s Eligible in Taiwan?

Sun Moon Lake

In Taiwan, tax refunds are available to international tourists for purchases made at designated Tax Refund Shops. There are two general categories of eligible items:

1. General Goods

This includes non-consumable items such as clothing, electronics, accessories, souvenirs, and household goods.

Conditions:

  • Minimum spend of TWD 2,000 (before tax) in a single day at the same tax refund store
  • No maximum spending limit
  • Goods must be taken out of Taiwan within 90 days of purchase

2. Consumable Goods

Items like packaged food, cosmetics, personal care products, and over-the-counter health supplements.

Conditions:

  • Items must remain unopened and in original packaging
  • Goods must be carried out of Taiwan in your luggage, for personal use only
  • Some shops may pack consumables in sealed bags – do not open them before departure

⚠️ Some stores allow both general and consumable items in one tax refund form, while others may separate them. Always check with the store staff before purchasing.

✅ Tax Refund Conditions – Are You Eligible in Taiwan?

Here’s what you need to qualify for a tax refund as a tourist in Taiwan:

You must be:

  • A non-resident of Taiwan (holding a foreign passport)
  • Staying in Taiwan for no more than 183 days on a tourist or short-term visa

You must:

  • Present your original passport at the time of purchase (photocopies are not accepted)
  • Spend at least TWD 2,000 in a single day at the same Tax Refund Shopping store
  • Purchase goods for personal use only (not for resale or commercial use)
  • Leave Taiwan within 90 days of the purchase date
  • Keep consumable items sealed and unused until you exit Taiwan

✈️ Customs officers may inspect your tax-refunded goods at the airport, so keep them in their original packaging and easily accessible in your carry-on luggage.

The Howard Plaza Hotel, what a grand and auspicious name! It boasts over 40 years of history and a prime location. The Taoyuan Airport bus (Dayou bus) even has a stop right by the hotel's side entrance. We booked a family room, which was spacious and included a delicious and varied breakfast. All the staff were warm, attentive, and provided excellent service. A special thanks to the bellhop, John Huang, for his thoughtful assistance.

Excellent and very friendly service throughout my entire stay from doorman to concierge to front desk to housekeeping to restaurant to gym. Great location next to Shandao temple MRT and within walking distance to Taipei station, nice restaurants, cafes and the famed Fuhang soy milk. I also enjoyed the excellent lunch buffer at the hotel restaurant Kitchen 12 at incredibly reasonable price. But please note that Marriott Bonvoy platinum elite or higher tier members do not receive the usual executive lounge access or free breakfast if you book via Trip.com (you need to book directly with Marriott to enjoy the benefits).

As a 5-star hotel, I don't think they should be promoting self check-in kiosks. A 5-star hotel should provide the expected service, not tell me to use a self check-in machine – I might as well book a 3-star hotel then. And if the self check-in machine wasn't bad enough, it even had problems. Check-in was supposed to start at 3 PM, but when I arrived at 4 PM, it said my room wasn't ready yet? Then I had to go back to the front desk to sort it out. If the machines are so unreliable, why not just let guests check in at the front desk? Furthermore, before checking in, I specifically requested a high floor, and the hotel even replied that for my room type, the highest floor available was the 29th, which shows they saw my note. Yet, upon check-in, I was assigned the lowest available floor, the 12th. I had to request a change again to get moved to the 18th floor – it's just speechless. And to top it off, I can overlook the lack of toothbrushes and toothpaste, but shouldn't a room at least come with two bottles of mineral water as standard? I know there's a water dispenser on every floor, but I'm a tourist. Do you expect me to carry a bottle around everywhere? There's a limit to how 'eco-friendly' one can be.

Fantastic hotel! I thoroughly enjoyed my stay here during my trip to Taipei. A fun little bonus was being able to grab candy from the snack shop next door every day. The room was really smart, and I loved having a square bathtub and bath salts. Highly recommend!

We had a wonderful stay at the Grand Hotel. If possible, I highly recommend booking a window-side room in the main building. The view is amazing—you can watch planes taking off and landing at Songshan Airport while also enjoying a beautiful view of Taipei 101. It was a unique and memorable experience, especially during the evening. The hotel itself is beautiful, and the combination of the historic architecture and the stunning city view made our stay even more enjoyable.

The service was pretty good; I didn't touch my luggage after getting out of the car. However, I didn't have many needs or encounter much service to begin with. There were a lot of Japanese staff members... both times I checked in and out, they were Japanese women, and I struggled to understand their Chinese. Maybe they should stick to speaking Japanese... The room was a bit old but perfectly fine, standard for a five-star hotel. Two large brass keys offered the ultimate vintage experience. They're still practicing 'eco-friendliness' by shifting costs to guests, providing a sanitary bag which was genuinely inconvenient since I was on my period. The bathtub wasn't great; at 1.72m, I just barely fit in, it wasn't spacious at all, and it only had one faucet, no adjustment. No slippers or disposables, but I loved the scent of the three bath products. The welcome fruit was a bit of a joke; the welcome pastries, however, surprised me at first, coming in such a large wooden box. But then I thought, how is this different from being handed a random pile of wedding candies? I couldn't eat it all anyway. It was annoying that there wasn't a three-pin socket by the bed to charge my phone's dual Type-C ports; only the desk had two, one 110V and one 220V. Directly opposite the window was just a regular vintage residential building, but there was a distant view of Taipei 101, which was a pleasant surprise. The public areas exuded old money charm... The underground Regent Galleria is a high-end mall... I'd never seen one inside a hotel before, quite an experience. There were also many dessert shops. For me, zero appeal, zero shopping capability. The design of the restaurant or banquet hall near the lobby was a bit poor, with many steps and no accessibility facilities, still very vintage. There was a piano and cello performance in the pool at the bottom of the building in the evening. P12-15 The good reviews for this place really come down to nostalgia and food, I guess. I hadn't booked breakfast, but after seeing so many positive reviews, I quickly added it. It was $968 per person. Open from 6:30 AM to 10:00 AM, with the last seating at 9:30 AM. I went at 9 AM, and it was mostly full, so it's clearly very popular. The variety was indeed rich, with many ********* specialties, and the taste was decent, though not amazing. Apart from the service and breakfast being standard, my personal experience felt more like 4.5 stars.

Great service and location, but an absolute nightmare of a stay Rating: 1/5 I booked this hotel for a one-night trip to Taipei for a concert—just me, alone, excited to see my idol. Unfortunately, the stay itself was a total nightmare. Let me start with the positives: the service is excellent—knowledgeable, quick, and polite. The location is also perfect, with a direct path from the Taipei MRT station to the hotel, and you can reach Taoyuan Airport in under an hour. There's even a water machine in the corridor, which was handy for getting hot water. But that's where the good ends. The hotel is shockingly old—worse than any dilapidated hotel in Hong Kong at a third of the price. For what I paid, I did not expect this level of neglect. I couldn't book a single or double room, so they gave me a room with three beds. I lay down on the first bed furthest from the window and soon felt itchy—I suspect bed lice. The other two beds near the window seemed fine, but that's already unacceptable. And the blankets were so thin I felt completely insecure—like there was nothing protecting me. The bathroom was a disaster. Hair on the wall, a small dark spot in the bathtub, and no hairdryer. The toilet barely flushed—I had to press the button multiple times, and the toilet paper just wouldn't go away. As for the shower—I've never seen anything like this in 40 years of traveling. Not even in mainland China hotels I visited as a kid with my grandparents. The knob was super loose and barely functional. Turning it to the hot water side did nothing—no water came out. Slightly turning the other way (still on the red hot side) gave only cold water. I could not get hot water at all. At breakfast, I overheard Japanese ladies complaining about the exact same issue. Unbelievable. There were also zero amenities. They hide behind ”eco-friendly,” but in Japan, you can still ask for supplies. Here, I didn't even have tissue paper in the room—I had to go back to the toilet to get toilet paper. I couldn't take a proper shower. I feel so dirty and uncomfortable. Truly a nightmare. I would never recommend this place to anyone.

The hotel is located near to the Zhongxiao Dunhua station (exit 3) and walking distance from Ming Yao Department Store, Taipei Dome, Songshan Cultural and Creative Park and National Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall. There are also many convenience stores within the vicinity and famous donut stores nearby. During our stay, we travelled by foot from the hotel to Pokemon Center Taipei, Taipei 101 and even to Linjiang Night Market.  The room is spacious. There are bathtub and shower in our room, but due to the law in Taiwan, please prepare your own toothbrush and toothpaste. There are also luggage weighing machine and coin-laundry machines in a small room on the floor where they serve breakfast. While not to expect a widespread of choices, I think their breakfast selection is a decent combination of local dishes and western options. Special mention that their pineapples are very sweet! If you are interested, you may also check out over the counter on the selection of local products that can be ordered and delivered to the hotel. It may save you trouble to locate some of the famous brands in Taipei. Overall, we enjoyed our stay at Green World Zhongxiao.

The location of this hotel is perfect, situated right next to 101. A short walk across the footbridge and you have access to a number of restaurants and food court. The room itself is sufficient but a bit old and dated. The lobby is big and full of people, almost like a tourist attraction. With the doors constantly opening and closing, any cold air tends to escaping resulting in quite a warm and uncomfortable lobby.

The Hollywood King Room had a really big and comfortable bed! We stayed for three nights. The toilet was a TOTO, and the wet/dry separation was a big plus! The hotel's location is super convenient, very close to Ximending Pedestrian Area. The only issue was on the first night, we had no cell signal, which led us to take a wrong turn after exiting the subway. The closest subway exit is the Underground Street - X6, and exit X5 has an escalator. We ended up having to take a taxi. The hotel's name is also hard to spot at night. Breakfast was plentiful, and the staff were incredibly diligent, constantly clearing plates. Overall, the service was excellent, and it offered great value for money.

Enjoyed our stay at Miramar - room was clean and big with most facilities we needed (toiletries not provided due to them being more sustainable but was told you can purchase/request from front desk); the shampoo, bath soap and conditioner provided was one of the best I’ve tried for hotels. The gym although felt a bit cramped was decently equipped (had a smith machine too) and while I didn’t use it, there was an onsen bath as well with good facilities and 2 separate pools. Buffet breakfast had a good range of cuisines, a noodle/omelette station that’s made to order; especially enjoyed the variations in some of the dishes provided across the days. I didn’t mind the 10 minute walk away from the nearest mrt station much and liked that there was also a free entry to the art museum directly opposite from the hotel as well.

🔁 Tax Refund Procedures – How to Claim It in Taiwan

Source: City News Service

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to claim your tax refund in Taiwan:

🛍️ At the Store:

  • Shop as usual at a designated Tax Refund Shopping store (look for the “Tax Refund” logo).
  • Inform the cashier that you would like to apply for a tax refund.
  • Present your original passport during checkout. The store will provide a Tax Refund Application Form along with the official receipt.
  • Some stores offer instant tax refunds at the counter, while others require you to complete the process at the airport.
  • Keep all documents and purchases well-organized—I used a small folder to hold my receipts and forms.

🛫 At the Airport:

  • Arrive at the airport at least 3 hours before your flight.
  • Head to the Tax Refund Service Counter located before security or immigration.
  • Present your passport, tax refund forms, receipts, and the purchased goods.
  • In some cases, customs officers may inspect your goods, especially if they are high-value items or sealed consumables.
  • Once approved, your refund will be issued in cash (TWD) or to your credit card, depending on the method available.

🧠 Tip: Some airports have automated kiosks for small refunds, but for larger amounts, go directly to the staffed counter. Always double-check the location and operating hours of the refund counter in advance.

🏪 Duty-Free Shops in Taiwan – Where to Go?

Here are some popular spots for tax-free shopping in Taiwan that many tourists love:

👜 Eslite Spectrum – A lifestyle department store offering books, fashion, homeware, and local designer goods
📷 Nova / Guanghua Digital Plaza (Taipei) – Great for electronics, gadgets, and tech accessories
💄 Cosmed / Watsons – Popular pharmacy chains with beauty products, skincare, and supplements
👗 Uniqlo / NET / iROO – Affordable and stylish fashion, including local and international brands
🎁 Taiwan Handicraft Promotion Center / souvenir shops in Ximending – Perfect for traditional crafts, tea, and local gifts

🧠 Tip: Look for signs that say “Tax Refund Available” or “退稅” at the entrance or cashier. Always confirm with the staff if the store participates in Taiwan’s tax refund program.

🔥 Taiwan Tax Refund Tips

Source: Premia TNC

Here are a few things I wish I knew before my trip—learn from my experience! 👇

🔖 Keep Your Passport Handy

You’ll need to present your original passport at the cashier when making tax-free purchases, so don’t bury it deep in your bag.

🗃️ Stay Organised

Keep all your receipts, tax refund forms, and purchases together. I used a simple folder to avoid losing any important documents.

🛍️ Plan Your Purchases

Instead of making small purchases across different shops, try to buy from one store to meet the TWD 2,000 minimum required for a tax refund.

Don’t Open Your Purchases

If you’ve bought consumables, make sure they stay sealed and unused. Customs officers may inspect your items at the airport.

📍 Use the Airport Refund Counter

If the store doesn’t offer an instant refund, you can claim it at the airport before departure. Just be sure to arrive early and know where the counter is located.

📱 Use Translation Apps

Some store staff may not speak fluent English, so apps like Google Translate can help make communication easier.

💳 Use a Credit Card with No Foreign Transaction Fees

Using a card with zero FX fees helps you get better exchange rates and makes it easier to keep track of your expenses.
