As a Malaysian traveller in Chengdu, I was really excited to explore the Chengdu Metro. Just like the MRT in Kuala Lumpur, the metro here is busy but extremely efficient, making it one of the best ways to move around the city. What impressed me most was how convenient it is for reaching shopping districts, local food spots, and cultural attractions—all while avoiding the heavy road traffic. Using mobile apps and route planners makes getting around very simple, especially if you have a reliable eSIM for China.

In this guide, I’ll walk you through everything you need to know about the Chengdu Metro: how to buy tickets, important stations to look out for, the best routes for travellers, peak hours to avoid, and some local etiquette tips. Whether you’re heading from the airport straight to Tianfu Square or trying to figure out which line goes to Wide and Narrow Alleys, this Chengdu Metro guide has you covered. Let’s dive in!

🗺️ Overview of Chengdu Metro & Metro Lines

Jinjiang yehe

If you’re a Malaysian traveller familiar with the MRT in Kuala Lumpur, you’ll find the Chengdu Metro just as efficient—only on a larger scale. With its modern design, clean stations, and wide coverage, the metro makes exploring Chengdu smooth and stress-free. This guide will help you navigate the system with ease and confidence.

🚆 System at a Glance

The Chengdu Metro has 13 lines (and still expanding), connecting the city centre with surrounding districts and even reaching Shuangliu International Airport and Tianfu International Airport. It’s fast, affordable, and one of the easiest ways to explore Chengdu’s shopping streets, local food hubs, and cultural attractions.

🌈 Key Metro Lines

  • Line 1 (Blue): Runs north to south, connecting key spots like Tianfu Square, Sichuan Gymnasium, and South Railway Station.
  • Line 2 (Orange): Cuts across the city east to west, with access to Chunxi Road (a must-visit shopping area).
  • Line 3 (Pink): Great for tourists, linking the city to Chengdu Zoo and Chengdu East Railway Station.
  • Line 10 (Sky Blue): Directly connects Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport to the city centre.

📍 Main Transfer Points & Interchange Stations

  • Tianfu Square Station: The heart of Chengdu Metro, connecting Line 1 and Line 2, and the perfect base for exploring downtown.
  • Chunxi Road Station: A busy interchange for Line 2 and Line 3, surrounded by shopping, dining, and nightlife.
  • South Railway Station: Connects Line 1, Line 7, and high-speed trains for travel beyond Chengdu.

🧭 Traveller-Friendly Navigation Tips

The Chengdu Metro is very user-friendly, with bilingual signs in Chinese and English. Most stations are equipped with ticket machines that accept cash and mobile payments. To make your trip easier, download apps like Baidu Maps or use the Trip.com app for metro routes and real-time updates. Having a reliable eSIM also ensures you’re always connected for smooth navigation around the city.

🗺️ How to Buy Tickets, Chengdu Metro Card & Payment Methods

cara bayar metro chongqing

Getting around Chengdu with the metro is simple once you know how the ticketing system works. As a Malaysian traveller, I found it quite similar to using the MRT in Kuala Lumpur or the MRT in Singapore—straightforward, efficient, and affordable. Here’s a guide to help you pay for your metro rides with ease.

🎟️ Types of Tickets Available

  • Single-Trip Token: Best for one-way rides. These tokens can be purchased at ticket machines in every station.
  • Tourist Pass: Unlike some cities, Chengdu does not have a dedicated tourist metro pass, but single-trip tokens and rechargeable cards are more than enough for short visits.
  • Contactless Bank Cards: Most machines don’t accept foreign credit or debit cards, so it’s better to stick with tokens or a metro card.

🐼 Transit Card

  • Tianfu Tong Card: This is the main rechargeable transit card in Chengdu. It works for both metro and buses, making travel super convenient. You can avoid queues at ticket machines by simply tapping in and out.
  • Where to Buy: Available at service counters in major metro stations and some convenience stores across the city.

💸 Fares & Top-Up

  • Fare Range: Chengdu Metro fares start from around CNY 2 (RM 1.30) for short rides and can go up to about CNY 10 (RM 6.50) for longer distances.
  • Top-Up Options: You can reload your Tianfu Tong Card at metro stations. The minimum top-up is usually CNY 20 (RM 13).

📲 Digital Payment

  • Mobile Apps: Alipay and WeChat Pay are the most common payment methods in Chengdu. However, they often require a local bank account. For Malaysian travellers, the Tianfu Tong Card is the easiest option unless you’ve already set up these apps.

Best Option for Travellers

For short stays, getting a Tianfu Tong Card is the most practical choice. Loading around CNY 100 (RM 65) should cover several days of metro travel without the hassle of queuing for single-trip tokens each time.

⚠️ Things to Note

  • Rush Hour Crowds: Expect packed trains during peak hours, especially around Tianfu Square and Chunxi Road stations.
  • Foreign Bank Cards: Ticket machines don’t usually accept them, so it’s best to carry some cash for top-ups.
  • Refund Policy: The Tianfu Tong Card can be returned for a refund, but policies vary, so check at the service desk when you purchase it.

🗺️ Tips, Etiquette & Local Insights – Chengdu Metro

chengdu metro

Source: Wikiwand

As a Malaysian traveller in Chengdu, I noticed that the metro system is not just efficient, but also highly organised. Following local habits and etiquette really helps make the experience smoother and more enjoyable.

🚶 Platform & Boarding Etiquette

When waiting for the Chengdu Metro, always stand behind the yellow safety line and queue up properly. Let passengers exit before you board—this is something locals follow strictly. If you need to get off quickly, stand near the doors, but avoid blocking others. Priority seats are respected here, so do give them up for the elderly, pregnant women, or anyone in need.

📵 Etiquette Inside the Train

Keep your phone on silent and use earphones if you’re watching videos or listening to music. Conversations should be soft and polite. Eating and drinking are not allowed inside the metro, so it’s best to finish your snacks before boarding. If you’re carrying luggage, keep it close by and out of the way, especially during busy hours.

💡 Local Tips & Tricks

  • The best time to ride is outside of peak hours—late morning or early afternoon is more comfortable.
  • For sightseeing, Line 3 is very useful as it connects to Chengdu Zoo and East Railway Station. Line 10 is great if you’re heading to the airport.
  • At big interchange stations like Tianfu Square or Chunxi Road, crowds can be heavy—try to plan your transfers a bit earlier or later to avoid the rush.
  • A small hack: at Tianfu Square, the exits can get confusing, so check the station map before leaving to save time.

🛑 Common Mistakes by Travellers

  • Forgetting to tap out with your metro card—this can cause extra charges.
  • Trying to hold train doors open, which is discouraged and may delay services.
  • Assuming cash is accepted—tickets and top-ups usually require a metro card or digital payment.

🧭 Local Habits

Chengdu locals rely on apps like Baidu Maps or the official Chengdu Metro app for route planning and real-time train updates. Many people also top up their Tianfu Tong Card during quieter times to skip queues. Another thing I noticed is that locals respect personal space and avoid pushing, even when the trains are crowded—something I found very refreshing compared to other busy cities.

The hotel staff, from the front desk to the cleaning crew, provided excellent and enthusiastic service. Knowing I was traveling with a child and staying for several days, they thoughtfully upgraded my room. The hotel's underground parking is convenient for both parking and charging. Plus, it's super easy to get around as the hotel is right at the entrance of Luomashi Metro Station.

The location is excellent, right next to Chunxi Road, just across the skywalk. The hotel exterior is grand, and the hygiene is very good. Since it's a 1996 hotel, the rooms are a bit smaller compared to other five-star hotels. The breakfast selection isn't extensive, but it's a good mix of Chinese and Western options, covering the basics. For the price, it offers great value for money! The staff's service was super good; they upgraded our room, and my parents were very satisfied.

Lena and Queena Li Dan's service saved the day, but the dinner experience was still absurd. Check-in: Five stars for Lena Yan. I arrived at 3 PM, and Lena at the front desk immediately recognized me as a regular. Check-in was done in 3 minutes, it was incredibly heartwarming. Duty Manager: Five stars for Queena Li Dan. I brought up the restaurant issues with her, and she immediately explained and empathized with me. Very satisfied. Dinner: I don't even want to give one star. At 7:30 PM, I followed the signs to the 7th-floor restaurant. The entrance was empty, not even a host stand was staffed. I walked in and after dozens of seconds, I finally found a server who told me, 'No tables available, please wait next door.' Then they directed me to a small, dimly lit room on the left, where I couldn't see anything. After waiting 10 minutes and being completely ignored, I just went back to my room and ordered takeout. The management level of your restaurant is like night and day compared to the front desk. Summary: For Lena and Queena Li Dan, I might stay here again. But unless the restaurant undergoes a complete overhaul, I will absolutely not step foot on the 7th floor again.

The breakfast was absolutely perfect 💯, really making up for the hotel's shortcomings in other areas. It's an older hotel, an established brand, so I guess the Ritz-Carlton Chengdu is a stark reminder to anyone hoping for a budget-friendly luxury stay. Being an older property, the decor and design are definitely dated and outmoded. The fact that the lobby is on the 25th floor already tells you the hotel's overall scale won't offer many surprises. The lobby and bar are on the same floor, which naturally lends a quieter atmosphere. The opulent decor feels out of step with current mainstream styles, creating a rather odd vibe. The room was standard for a five-star, with all the expected amenities. You could still see the signature Ritz royal flair, but the signs of age and the worn-out feel prevented me from truly appreciating the brand's concept. As for the pool and gym… let's just say I won't be commenting on them. The real highlight was breakfast: incredibly rich, professional, enticing, and thoughtfully prepared. All in all, for around 800 RMB a night at the Ritz, this is pretty much what you get. It's unrealistic to expect a 2000 RMB experience at that price point. However, it seems many five-star hotels across Chengdu suffer from similar issues of being old and dated, so I don't blame the hotel itself too much.

A St. Regis for a three-digit price per night is incredible value for money! Even though it's been open for over 10 years, the room amenities are still top-notch: a smart toilet, screen-mirroring TV, capsule coffee machine, electric curtains, and a spacious 60sqm room with a walk-in closet and a 2-meter king-size bed – everything you need. The butler service is very attentive; they proactively contacted me via WeChat the day before check-in to inform me about complimentary services, hotel restaurants, and fitness facilities. The snowflake shortbread served during turn-down service every night was absolutely delicious, and my butler, knowing I loved it, even made sure to leave extra in my room daily. After staying at the JW Marriott Chengdu Maoye, Grand Hyatt Chengdu, Hyatt Centric Chengdu, Shangri-La, and The Ritz-Carlton, the St. Regis still remains my top choice.

Coming back from Nepal, I got caught in Chengdu during the Sugar and Wine Fair, and all the hotels were fully booked. I couldn't even reserve a room at Jinjiang or Minshan, so I opted for this older four-star hotel. I honestly didn't have high expectations, but it turned out to be much better than I anticipated! The room was super spacious, the bedding was incredibly comfortable, and housekeeping was prompt. All the little details were well taken care of, and the service was absolutely top-notch. A special shout-out to Lobby Attendant #677 for their professional and thoughtful service. The breakfast was also fantastic – after eight days of just getting by with food in Nepal, it was such a relief to finally have a proper meal!

The rooms are spotlessly clean. It was really heartwarming to be greeted so warmly by the cleaning staff in the hallway every time – it genuinely felt like a home away from home. The front desk team was also incredibly thoughtful. They even offer a laundry service, washing and drying clothes if you're too busy sightseeing, and folded everything neatly in a basket – a truly thoughtful touch. FAQs: Chengdu Metro

  • What are the operating hours of the Chengdu Metro? ⏰

The Chengdu Metro generally runs from about 6:00 AM to 11:30 PM. However, operating hours may vary slightly by line, so it’s always a good idea to check the schedule in advance—especially if you’re catching an early flight or heading out late at night.
  • How do I buy tickets for the Chengdu Metro? 🎟️

Tickets can be purchased easily from vending machines at all metro stations. For greater convenience, I recommend getting a Tianfu Tong Card, which is a rechargeable transit card that works on both metro and buses. It saves you from queuing for single-trip tokens each time.
  • Is there a mobile app to help navigate the Chengdu Metro? 📱

Yes! The official Chengdu Metro app provides route planning, live train updates, and service notices. Baidu Maps is also very reliable for local navigation, although it’s mostly in Chinese. For Malaysian travellers, having a reliable eSIM makes it much easier to use these apps on the go.
