As a Malaysian traveller in Chengdu, I was really excited to explore the Chengdu Metro. Just like the MRT in Kuala Lumpur, the metro here is busy but extremely efficient, making it one of the best ways to move around the city. What impressed me most was how convenient it is for reaching shopping districts, local food spots, and cultural attractions—all while avoiding the heavy road traffic. Using mobile apps and route planners makes getting around very simple, especially if you have a reliable eSIM for China.

In this guide, I’ll walk you through everything you need to know about the Chengdu Metro: how to buy tickets, important stations to look out for, the best routes for travellers, peak hours to avoid, and some local etiquette tips. Whether you’re heading from the airport straight to Tianfu Square or trying to figure out which line goes to Wide and Narrow Alleys, this Chengdu Metro guide has you covered. Let’s dive in!

🗺️ Overview of Chengdu Metro & Metro Lines

Jinjiang yehe

If you’re a Malaysian traveller familiar with the MRT in Kuala Lumpur, you’ll find the Chengdu Metro just as efficient—only on a larger scale. With its modern design, clean stations, and wide coverage, the metro makes exploring Chengdu smooth and stress-free. This guide will help you navigate the system with ease and confidence.

🚆 System at a Glance

The Chengdu Metro has 13 lines (and still expanding), connecting the city centre with surrounding districts and even reaching Shuangliu International Airport and Tianfu International Airport. It’s fast, affordable, and one of the easiest ways to explore Chengdu’s shopping streets, local food hubs, and cultural attractions.

🌈 Key Metro Lines

  • Line 1 (Blue): Runs north to south, connecting key spots like Tianfu Square, Sichuan Gymnasium, and South Railway Station.
  • Line 2 (Orange): Cuts across the city east to west, with access to Chunxi Road (a must-visit shopping area).
  • Line 3 (Pink): Great for tourists, linking the city to Chengdu Zoo and Chengdu East Railway Station.
  • Line 10 (Sky Blue): Directly connects Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport to the city centre.

📍 Main Transfer Points & Interchange Stations

  • Tianfu Square Station: The heart of Chengdu Metro, connecting Line 1 and Line 2, and the perfect base for exploring downtown.
  • Chunxi Road Station: A busy interchange for Line 2 and Line 3, surrounded by shopping, dining, and nightlife.
  • South Railway Station: Connects Line 1, Line 7, and high-speed trains for travel beyond Chengdu.

🧭 Traveller-Friendly Navigation Tips

The Chengdu Metro is very user-friendly, with bilingual signs in Chinese and English. Most stations are equipped with ticket machines that accept cash and mobile payments. To make your trip easier, download apps like Baidu Maps or use the Trip.com app for metro routes and real-time updates. Having a reliable eSIM also ensures you’re always connected for smooth navigation around the city.

🗺️ How to Buy Tickets, Chengdu Metro Card & Payment Methods

cara bayar metro chongqing

Getting around Chengdu with the metro is simple once you know how the ticketing system works. As a Malaysian traveller, I found it quite similar to using the MRT in Kuala Lumpur or the MRT in Singapore—straightforward, efficient, and affordable. Here’s a guide to help you pay for your metro rides with ease.

🎟️ Types of Tickets Available

  • Single-Trip Token: Best for one-way rides. These tokens can be purchased at ticket machines in every station.
  • Tourist Pass: Unlike some cities, Chengdu does not have a dedicated tourist metro pass, but single-trip tokens and rechargeable cards are more than enough for short visits.
  • Contactless Bank Cards: Most machines don’t accept foreign credit or debit cards, so it’s better to stick with tokens or a metro card.

🐼 Transit Card

  • Tianfu Tong Card: This is the main rechargeable transit card in Chengdu. It works for both metro and buses, making travel super convenient. You can avoid queues at ticket machines by simply tapping in and out.
  • Where to Buy: Available at service counters in major metro stations and some convenience stores across the city.

💸 Fares & Top-Up

  • Fare Range: Chengdu Metro fares start from around CNY 2 (RM 1.30) for short rides and can go up to about CNY 10 (RM 6.50) for longer distances.
  • Top-Up Options: You can reload your Tianfu Tong Card at metro stations. The minimum top-up is usually CNY 20 (RM 13).

📲 Digital Payment

  • Mobile Apps: Alipay and WeChat Pay are the most common payment methods in Chengdu. However, they often require a local bank account. For Malaysian travellers, the Tianfu Tong Card is the easiest option unless you’ve already set up these apps.

Best Option for Travellers

For short stays, getting a Tianfu Tong Card is the most practical choice. Loading around CNY 100 (RM 65) should cover several days of metro travel without the hassle of queuing for single-trip tokens each time.

⚠️ Things to Note

  • Rush Hour Crowds: Expect packed trains during peak hours, especially around Tianfu Square and Chunxi Road stations.
  • Foreign Bank Cards: Ticket machines don’t usually accept them, so it’s best to carry some cash for top-ups.
  • Refund Policy: The Tianfu Tong Card can be returned for a refund, but policies vary, so check at the service desk when you purchase it.

🗺️ Tips, Etiquette & Local Insights – Chengdu Metro

chengdu metro

Source: Wikiwand

As a Malaysian traveller in Chengdu, I noticed that the metro system is not just efficient, but also highly organised. Following local habits and etiquette really helps make the experience smoother and more enjoyable.

🚶 Platform & Boarding Etiquette

When waiting for the Chengdu Metro, always stand behind the yellow safety line and queue up properly. Let passengers exit before you board—this is something locals follow strictly. If you need to get off quickly, stand near the doors, but avoid blocking others. Priority seats are respected here, so do give them up for the elderly, pregnant women, or anyone in need.

📵 Etiquette Inside the Train

Keep your phone on silent and use earphones if you’re watching videos or listening to music. Conversations should be soft and polite. Eating and drinking are not allowed inside the metro, so it’s best to finish your snacks before boarding. If you’re carrying luggage, keep it close by and out of the way, especially during busy hours.

💡 Local Tips & Tricks

  • The best time to ride is outside of peak hours—late morning or early afternoon is more comfortable.
  • For sightseeing, Line 3 is very useful as it connects to Chengdu Zoo and East Railway Station. Line 10 is great if you’re heading to the airport.
  • At big interchange stations like Tianfu Square or Chunxi Road, crowds can be heavy—try to plan your transfers a bit earlier or later to avoid the rush.
  • A small hack: at Tianfu Square, the exits can get confusing, so check the station map before leaving to save time.

🛑 Common Mistakes by Travellers

  • Forgetting to tap out with your metro card—this can cause extra charges.
  • Trying to hold train doors open, which is discouraged and may delay services.
  • Assuming cash is accepted—tickets and top-ups usually require a metro card or digital payment.

🧭 Local Habits

Chengdu locals rely on apps like Baidu Maps or the official Chengdu Metro app for route planning and real-time train updates. Many people also top up their Tianfu Tong Card during quieter times to skip queues. Another thing I noticed is that locals respect personal space and avoid pushing, even when the trains are crowded—something I found very refreshing compared to other busy cities.

Booked this hotel for a company training, and it's super convenient – right by Chunxi Road, and the subway exit is practically at the hotel entrance. The front desk manager was amazing, I wish I knew her name! I'd booked a 399 RMB room, but they upgraded me to a deluxe executive king room, probably because they were short on standard rooms. The room itself was fantastic after I checked in! And the breakfast selection was incredible! Seriously, so many choices it was dizzying and overwhelming in the best way possible. Full marks! Highly recommend! Plus, you get a beautiful night view! It was stunning!

A very satisfying stay! We brought our child from Chongqing to Chengdu to see the giant pandas. Xiao Qin at the front desk and Xiao Yi from housekeeping were incredibly warm and attentive. When checking in, the front desk gave us direct bus tickets to the Panda Breeding Research Base, which was super convenient. The next morning at 8:30 AM, there was a bus right outside the hotel that took us directly there. Given the recent heatwave warning, they thoughtfully provided extra water, showing concern for our well-being. Due to our itinerary, on the third morning, we took our child to the Chengdu Museum, and afterwards, we planned to take them to Guanghan to see the Sanxingdui site. They proactively asked if we needed a late check-out or wanted to extend our stay, which really took the stress out of worrying about check-out times. The free panda bus tickets were a nice touch. The hotel's location is excellent, very close to Wangfujing Mall, Chunxi Road, IFC, and Taikoo Li. Highly recommend! It will definitely be my first choice for future stays! I didn't take many photos, so I can only piece together what I have. The second picture is the hotel's second-floor afternoon tea and breakfast restaurant.

Hotel was in a relatively good location. Within walking distance there are malls and food stalls. Opposite hotel was the Sichuan opera theatre. Recommended to watch at least once. Hotel is able to get the tickets at cheaper rates. For the two bedroom suite, it is suitable for family of 5 with 1 child inclusive. There is one master bedroom which is directly linked to the toilet with a bathtub. Other room and second toilet is separated. Kitchen is fully equipped with cutlery etc. detergent is also provided for the washer. Refrigerator has normal and freezer compartment. Balcony is locked but you can sign an indemnity form to open it. Slippers provided are of good quality and house keeping is good. Only downside is the different little issues for different room we stayed in like hot water tap not working. hotel is connected to a mall, the HK cafe there is recommended. Food is good. Also the bakery sells really good chocolate bun. You can find it right after u enter the mall through hotel lobby. The best thing of course was Tina, who always served with a smiling face and takes the initiative to add you on WeChat to cater to your queries whenever you need. she was also the one who helped to provide breakfast for our child whose breakfast was not included. The other lady who served us on the first night told us we had to pay. It was a very nice gesture from Tina. look for Tina if u stay here, she will be a great help. For the breakfast,it is not the most fanciful but sufficient. Food changes daily but some food type stays the same. They have a paper where you can order noodles, egg omelette, pancakes and waffles. It will be served to you directly so thats a nice touch. They even provide disposable cups for the coffee machine with lids so that you can bring it out if you are in hurry or needed more drink. On weekday and weekend breakfast, the crowd was just nice unlike some hotels where it feels overwhelming and overcrowded due to the huge influx of tourists and there is no need to worry about food running out. Only downside for us is we can’t differentiate the type of meat. We don’t eat beef but it doesn’t state on the labels so we had to ask each time we wanted to take meat or dishes with meat. It is easy to call for DIDI (their taxis) from the hotel. If you have 4 pax or less, hotel can call for you but more than that, you have to arrange yourself. Overall I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone who wants a comfortable stay. Definitely you can’t compare the price to a cheaper hotel. You are paying for quality over here.

This was my first time in Chengdu, and I chose the Ritz-Carlton as my initial stop. I didn't want to run around, just wanted to relax at the hotel, so I booked an executive room. After my stay, all I can say is it was absolutely worth every penny! Everyone should go for the executive room! The lounge food is incredibly delicious. For lunch and dinner, there are two different main courses every day, along with many hot dishes and exceptionally tasty small cakes! In the evening, there's also a period for cocktails, and all drinks are free-flowing. It wasn't crowded at all, so I even got to try making my own cocktails for the first time. A big thank you to Ms. Eara Li for her patient guidance and active cooperation – she was truly wonderful, and the cocktails she helped me make were fantastic! Breakfast maintained the usual high standard of the Ritz-Carlton, with a wide variety and many Sichuan specialty breakfast items. There were also plenty of seats, so no waiting even during peak hours. Overall, the hotel opened a while ago, so the decor might feel a bit dated, but I would definitely come back for the service alone!

The hotel lobby is quite small. When checking in, we were greeted with a champagne welcome ceremony, and the lobby manager was very enthusiastic. The 'Panda Family Room' we booked was essentially a regular king room with an extra bed. The bedding in the room had panda elements, and the children's toiletries also featured panda branding. If you're just looking for an extra bed for an older child, a king room with an added bed might be more suitable. Overall, the service wasn't particularly special. When I asked if they had any laundry soap or detergent to clean my accidentally dirtied shoes, the answer was no. The check-out process was noticeably less enthusiastic than check-in, though they did offer two bottles of water for the road. Regarding the Florence Village package and similar offerings, these were never proactively introduced from check-in to check-out. The breakfast selection was rich, but during peak hours, you had to go to the bar next door, which was across the hallway and inconvenient. On the first day, we received a very cute panda mousse, which was the only five-star highlight. On the second day, there was none, nor was there any fruit.

The hotel is located near the IFS building and can be reached on foot in about 10 minutes. There are plenty of food options around the hotel, including street food, local restaurants, and shopping malls with food courts. The hotel staff were friendly and service-minded. Although communication was mainly through a translation app, they were helpful and willing to assist. The room was clean and free of any cigarette smell. However, the bathroom had a musty odor, and there was a bag or covering placed over a drain pipe, although I was not sure of its purpose. This could be improved to enhance the overall guest experience.

I've stayed at the Ruicheng Celebrity Hotel many times, and my overall experience has always been exceptionally satisfying. The hotel is located in the heart of Luomashi, just a few minutes' walk from Wenshuyuan subway station, making it incredibly convenient to get to popular attractions like Tianfu Square, Chunxi Road, and Kuanzhai Alley. It saves a lot of time and hassle when getting around. The rooms are spotless and tidy, with attention paid to every detail, and the bedding is soft and comfortable, ensuring a peaceful night's sleep. The front desk staff are efficient and quick with check-ins, offering thoughtful and attentive service, and they even provided helpful tips for exploring the local area. The buffet breakfast offers a wide variety of choices, including local Sichuan snacks, as well as Chinese and Western dishes. Additionally, there's a free laundry room and parking. If you get a good room, you can see the IFS climbing panda right outside your window. The hotel is located right on Chunxi Road Pedestrian Street, and it's only about 100 meters from the subway station – super convenient! We arrived at 11 PM, and unfortunately, our room had a leaky shower seal, so water spilled out. Since I was with my elderly parents and child, and the staff confirmed they couldn't fix it right away, the hotel promptly upgraded us to a better room for one night. The hotel breakfast was a highlight, and the Chunxi Balcony design outside was very exquisite. Even my Canadian-born Chinese (CBC) son said he was satisfied 👍. At checkout, the front desk gentleman, Hua Shao, even gave him some chilled sweet shrimp. It was my son's first time back in China seeing such a bustling night view, and he was so impressed by how friendly the people in Chengdu are. Thank you!

Stepping into the hotel from the scorching heat outside, we were met with cool comfort and that familiar, pleasant scent. Our river-view room offered an unobstructed view of the stunning scenery outside. The room itself was clean, comfortable, spacious, and bright, and we were even treated to welcome fruits and local snacks – truly wonderful! Although the hotel is a bit older, the service and maintenance are still top-notch. The dinner buffet even includes hot pot, and guests get a discount. The food was delicious, with à la carte options, roast duck, and local specialties like Qiaojiao beef. There was a great selection of drinks, including white and red wines, and refreshing ice cream. I don't understand why no one comment on the door for the toilet and washroom. It is open at the top, cold air free to flow in. The carpet was obviously tilted and appear as eyesore to me. The lift can be access by anyone without the room card to any floor. The hotel lied to me it is only access ible by guest on the particular floor. Location wise, it is not ideal enough if you are expecting real close to subway. Better look for other hotel. Came for a weekend stay with the little one, and it was surprisingly good! The restaurant has a cozy ambiance with warm lighting and greenery, making meals very pleasant. The buffet breakfast ingredients were visibly fresh, the cold dishes and salads were crisp and refreshing, and there was a great variety of good quality bread. After a hearty meal, we went for a swim. The pool was large and clean, and the evening lighting created a wonderful atmosphere. Lounging by the pool instantly gave us that 'holiday' feeling. The biggest plus was the kids' play area; my child absolutely loved the slide and we couldn't get them to leave, which completely freed up the adults' hands. This Home Inn I booked for my trip to Chengdu was easily the best I've ever stayed at; the experience was truly fantastic. The moment I stepped in, I was greeted by a lovely fragrance, which was incredibly pleasant. The front desk staff were also very warm and attentive during check-in, always greeting guests with a smile. Their service was impeccable – always available but never intrusive. The hotel's overall decor has a distinctly British feel, and both the staff's attire and the interior design were excellent. The environment is quiet despite being in a bustling area; the whole place felt very peaceful. The hotel breakfast was quite good, offering local Chengdu specialties like 'xiaomian' (noodles), 'chaoshou' (wontons), and 'douhua' (tofu pudding). The cleaning staff were also very friendly; the 'auntie' cleaning our room even brought us extra bottles of water when tidying our room during our extended stay. The hotel is conveniently located in the city center near Xinnanmen Metro Station, just a 150m walk away. Having the metro so close made getting around and visiting attractions incredibly easy. Chunxi Road is just one metro stop away, and popular spots like Kuanzhai Alley and Wenshu Monastery are also easily accessible. There are plenty of dining options nearby, including 'chuan'er' (skewer) and hot pot restaurants. Just a short walk down University Road, you'll find even more local snacks.
