As a Malaysian traveller in Chengdu, I was really excited to explore the Chengdu Metro. Just like the MRT in Kuala Lumpur, the metro here is busy but extremely efficient, making it one of the best ways to move around the city. What impressed me most was how convenient it is for reaching shopping districts, local food spots, and cultural attractions—all while avoiding the heavy road traffic. Using mobile apps and route planners makes getting around very simple, especially if you have a reliable eSIM for China.

In this guide, I’ll walk you through everything you need to know about the Chengdu Metro: how to buy tickets, important stations to look out for, the best routes for travellers, peak hours to avoid, and some local etiquette tips. Whether you’re heading from the airport straight to Tianfu Square or trying to figure out which line goes to Wide and Narrow Alleys, this Chengdu Metro guide has you covered. Let’s dive in!

🗺️ Overview of Chengdu Metro & Metro Lines

Jinjiang yehe

If you’re a Malaysian traveller familiar with the MRT in Kuala Lumpur, you’ll find the Chengdu Metro just as efficient—only on a larger scale. With its modern design, clean stations, and wide coverage, the metro makes exploring Chengdu smooth and stress-free. This guide will help you navigate the system with ease and confidence.

🚆 System at a Glance

The Chengdu Metro has 13 lines (and still expanding), connecting the city centre with surrounding districts and even reaching Shuangliu International Airport and Tianfu International Airport. It’s fast, affordable, and one of the easiest ways to explore Chengdu’s shopping streets, local food hubs, and cultural attractions.

🌈 Key Metro Lines

  • Line 1 (Blue): Runs north to south, connecting key spots like Tianfu Square, Sichuan Gymnasium, and South Railway Station.
  • Line 2 (Orange): Cuts across the city east to west, with access to Chunxi Road (a must-visit shopping area).
  • Line 3 (Pink): Great for tourists, linking the city to Chengdu Zoo and Chengdu East Railway Station.
  • Line 10 (Sky Blue): Directly connects Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport to the city centre.

📍 Main Transfer Points & Interchange Stations

  • Tianfu Square Station: The heart of Chengdu Metro, connecting Line 1 and Line 2, and the perfect base for exploring downtown.
  • Chunxi Road Station: A busy interchange for Line 2 and Line 3, surrounded by shopping, dining, and nightlife.
  • South Railway Station: Connects Line 1, Line 7, and high-speed trains for travel beyond Chengdu.

🧭 Traveller-Friendly Navigation Tips

The Chengdu Metro is very user-friendly, with bilingual signs in Chinese and English. Most stations are equipped with ticket machines that accept cash and mobile payments. To make your trip easier, download apps like Baidu Maps or use the Trip.com app for metro routes and real-time updates. Having a reliable eSIM also ensures you’re always connected for smooth navigation around the city.

🗺️ How to Buy Tickets, Chengdu Metro Card & Payment Methods

cara bayar metro chongqing

Getting around Chengdu with the metro is simple once you know how the ticketing system works. As a Malaysian traveller, I found it quite similar to using the MRT in Kuala Lumpur or the MRT in Singapore—straightforward, efficient, and affordable. Here’s a guide to help you pay for your metro rides with ease.

🎟️ Types of Tickets Available

  • Single-Trip Token: Best for one-way rides. These tokens can be purchased at ticket machines in every station.
  • Tourist Pass: Unlike some cities, Chengdu does not have a dedicated tourist metro pass, but single-trip tokens and rechargeable cards are more than enough for short visits.
  • Contactless Bank Cards: Most machines don’t accept foreign credit or debit cards, so it’s better to stick with tokens or a metro card.

🐼 Transit Card

  • Tianfu Tong Card: This is the main rechargeable transit card in Chengdu. It works for both metro and buses, making travel super convenient. You can avoid queues at ticket machines by simply tapping in and out.
  • Where to Buy: Available at service counters in major metro stations and some convenience stores across the city.

💸 Fares & Top-Up

  • Fare Range: Chengdu Metro fares start from around CNY 2 (RM 1.30) for short rides and can go up to about CNY 10 (RM 6.50) for longer distances.
  • Top-Up Options: You can reload your Tianfu Tong Card at metro stations. The minimum top-up is usually CNY 20 (RM 13).

📲 Digital Payment

  • Mobile Apps: Alipay and WeChat Pay are the most common payment methods in Chengdu. However, they often require a local bank account. For Malaysian travellers, the Tianfu Tong Card is the easiest option unless you’ve already set up these apps.

Best Option for Travellers

For short stays, getting a Tianfu Tong Card is the most practical choice. Loading around CNY 100 (RM 65) should cover several days of metro travel without the hassle of queuing for single-trip tokens each time.

⚠️ Things to Note

  • Rush Hour Crowds: Expect packed trains during peak hours, especially around Tianfu Square and Chunxi Road stations.
  • Foreign Bank Cards: Ticket machines don’t usually accept them, so it’s best to carry some cash for top-ups.
  • Refund Policy: The Tianfu Tong Card can be returned for a refund, but policies vary, so check at the service desk when you purchase it.

🗺️ Tips, Etiquette & Local Insights – Chengdu Metro

chengdu metro

Source: Wikiwand

As a Malaysian traveller in Chengdu, I noticed that the metro system is not just efficient, but also highly organised. Following local habits and etiquette really helps make the experience smoother and more enjoyable.

🚶 Platform & Boarding Etiquette

When waiting for the Chengdu Metro, always stand behind the yellow safety line and queue up properly. Let passengers exit before you board—this is something locals follow strictly. If you need to get off quickly, stand near the doors, but avoid blocking others. Priority seats are respected here, so do give them up for the elderly, pregnant women, or anyone in need.

📵 Etiquette Inside the Train

Keep your phone on silent and use earphones if you’re watching videos or listening to music. Conversations should be soft and polite. Eating and drinking are not allowed inside the metro, so it’s best to finish your snacks before boarding. If you’re carrying luggage, keep it close by and out of the way, especially during busy hours.

💡 Local Tips & Tricks

  • The best time to ride is outside of peak hours—late morning or early afternoon is more comfortable.
  • For sightseeing, Line 3 is very useful as it connects to Chengdu Zoo and East Railway Station. Line 10 is great if you’re heading to the airport.
  • At big interchange stations like Tianfu Square or Chunxi Road, crowds can be heavy—try to plan your transfers a bit earlier or later to avoid the rush.
  • A small hack: at Tianfu Square, the exits can get confusing, so check the station map before leaving to save time.

🛑 Common Mistakes by Travellers

  • Forgetting to tap out with your metro card—this can cause extra charges.
  • Trying to hold train doors open, which is discouraged and may delay services.
  • Assuming cash is accepted—tickets and top-ups usually require a metro card or digital payment.

🧭 Local Habits

Chengdu locals rely on apps like Baidu Maps or the official Chengdu Metro app for route planning and real-time train updates. Many people also top up their Tianfu Tong Card during quieter times to skip queues. Another thing I noticed is that locals respect personal space and avoid pushing, even when the trains are crowded—something I found very refreshing compared to other busy cities.

As a husband and a father, I don’t just look for comfort—I look for peace of mind. This hotel delivered both. Service was fast, thoughtful, and genuinely warm. Everything was clean, organized, and effortless, which matters when you’re traveling with family. The environment feels premium yet welcoming, not stiff. My family felt safe, relaxed, and well taken care of from the moment we arrived. Location is a huge win—surrounded by some of the best food Chengdu has to offer, with easy access everywhere. This isn’t just a place to sleep. It’s a place where a family can truly rest. Classy, reliable, and worth every cent.

Originally planned one night at the Crowne Plaza. A big shout-out to front desk staff member Xiao Qu for checking my IHG membership and upgrading me to a high-floor king room, which was a lovely experience. They even provided hand warmers and a coffee voucher upon check-in. The room was bright and comfortable. I ended up extending my entire 3-day stay at the Crowne Plaza! Hotel staff member Xiao Yi even personally delivered a fruit platter, and the online concierge service was incredibly efficient!

This stay at the ParcVue Hotel Chengdu was exceptional in every way. I reserved two rooms, and both were handled with the same level of precision, care, and attention to detail that defines truly great hospitality. This room was a Deluxe King Room, and it was spacious, quiet, and impeccably maintained, with a layout and comfort level that made it easy to truly relax. Lucas once again stood out as a defining part of the experience. His professionalism, attentiveness, and genuine care ensured that everything across both rooms was perfectly coordinated. He has a rare ability to make service feel personal rather than procedural, and his presence elevated the entire stay in a way that is immediately noticeable. What impressed me most was the consistency throughout the hotel. From housekeeping to the front desk, every interaction reflected pride, warmth, and intention. The service was intuitive rather than reactive, and the overall experience felt effortless. This stay further confirmed that the ParcVue is not just a luxury hotel, but a place that truly understands hospitality. I would choose it again without hesitation.

This is my umpteenth stay at the Ritz-Carlton Chengdu, and the standards are consistently excellent. During check-in, a friendly young man named Luca brought me some herbal tea. After a brief chat, he later delivered a thoughtful, handwritten welcome card to my room before dinner. Of all the five-star and ultra-five-star hotels I've stayed at in Chengdu, the Ritz-Carlton's Executive Lounge offers the most attentive service. From breakfast at 6:30 AM right through to evening desserts at 10 PM, they continuously provide a wonderful array of thoughtful services. I've included some photos of the breakfast and dinner spreads – they're incredibly rich and varied. Plus, for both lunch and dinner, they offer two freshly prepared dishes, like duck breast and pasta, made to order. Every staff member I encountered in the Executive Lounge was exceptionally warm, attentive, proactive, and anticipated my needs. Of course, breakfast is also available at the main restaurant in the lobby on the 25th floor. The variety there is truly astounding; just the noodle bar alone offers six different options (as shown in the pictures). I ate so much that morning, I didn't want to leave. All in all, this is the best hotel experience I've had in Chengdu. Honestly, the price isn't even that high, making it excellent value for money. I will definitely choose to stay here again.

In my opinion, this is the best hotel in Chengdu. 1. The St. Regis, as a long-standing luxury hotel chain, generally has high prices, but the Chengdu St. Regis offers some of the lowest rates worldwide, while still providing excellent service and top-notch in-room facilities (you can control the curtains from the bedside table…). 2. The location is superb. St. Regis hotels are very selective about their locations, and Chengdu is no exception. This hotel is right in the city center, just a 15-minute walk to Chunxi Road and Taikoo Li. Downstairs, there are countless local snacks and specialty shops. 3. The overall room experience is very good. The facilities are complete and generally high-end. The space is large and very comfortable. They even provide postcards, corkscrews, and more. The design is very strong, visually relaxing yet retaining an 'old money' elegance. 4. The public facilities are excellent. I didn't dine at the restaurant, so I can't comment, but it looked good overall. The lobby layout changes frequently, with the ambiance varying greatly throughout the year, but always imbued with character, fresh and elegant. 5. The service is exceptional. Butler service is a St. Regis forte, available 24 hours a day. One night, I called for black tea and milk, and they even brought snow crisp pastries! The turndown service every evening is very thoughtful and comfortable. The doorman and front desk service are also excellent. 6. You absolutely must experience the sabrage ritual for opening champagne in the evening~~ (The champagne was delicious; an elderly foreign lady sitting next to me even specifically asked for the brand).

My stay at the Junkun Hotel on Chunxi Road was an absolute delight from start to finish. This hotel expertly blends modern design with warm hospitality, creating an ideal base for exploring Chengdu. The location is simply unbeatable. Being steps away from the iconic Taikoo Li and Chunxi Road pedestrian area means you're at the epicenter of Chengdu's fashion, dining, and entertainment. You can effortlessly explore chic boutiques, sip coffee at trendy cafes, and sample incredible Sichuan cuisine, all within a few minutes' walk. The convenience is a major highlight.

Xinjinliang Hotel is a prominent, standalone high-rise building located on one of the busiest and most convenient streets. It's an established four-star hotel, and at just over 200 yuan a night, it offers great value. My room faced the alley, so it was quiet, and the space was generous. The twin beds were also quite wide. The air conditioning was practically silent. Breakfast was varied and good, priced at 35 yuan per person, which isn't expensive. Downstairs, there are several snack shops, including Yulongxuan. If you're coming from Chunxi Road, make sure to cross the street early and stay to the left, otherwise, you'll have to use the pedestrian overpass to reach the hotel. The hotel lobby has a four-step staircase, but there's a ramp next to it for luggage and accessing the elevator. One minor inconvenience is that even if you set your pick-up location at the lobby, ride-sharing apps will only stop at Minsheng Bank on the street outside the corridor, they won't drive into the hotel entrance. This means you have to drag your luggage about 40 meters when checking in or out. However, the hotel does offer late check-out, so overall, I'm satisfied.

The room was a decent size, clean and tidy, with comprehensive amenities and a high standard of furnishings: bathrobes, face towels, hand towels, bath towels, and a safe. Bottled water was supplied unlimitedly. This room faced a residential area, so it was quite quiet, and the window could be partially opened. The breakfast was good, with a decent variety of options, better than what you'd find at other budget chain hotels. The front desk service was professional and enthusiastic. The hotel is about 500-600 meters from a Line 4 metro station. There are also quite a few small supermarkets and restaurants right outside the hotel, which is very convenient. I highly recommend it for independent travelers and business trippers.

The location is great, very close to Tongzilin subway station. Line 1 goes directly to Wenshu Monastery and Chengdu South Station, which is super convenient. The hotel has a constant-temperature swimming pool and a warm-water soaking pool. I went twice and had them almost to myself, which was fantastic for a family of three who love to swim. The room isn't huge, but it's clean and sufficient, and the TV supports screen mirroring, which is very handy. There are two minor points that aren't exactly flaws: 1. The hallway scent in the hotel is a bit too strong. 2. Even with the AC/heater off, the duvet was still too warm; taking it off made it cold, which was a bit awkward.

Having been thoroughly impressed by the food and service at the Horizon Club of Shangri-La Hotel on my last visit, I didn't hesitate to choose Shangri-La Chengdu again for this trip. Firstly, a big thank you to Ms. Lu, who was previously the Horizon Club manager and has now been promoted to Front Office Manager. Her warmth and helpfulness in securing a satisfactory room for us, along with complimentary fruit and local Sichuan snacks, and arranging a late check-out, set a wonderful tone for our entire journey. Strategically located near Jiuyan Bridge and the famous Lan Kwai Fong bar street, the hotel boasts a vibrant atmosphere and unbeatable night views. However, it's a bit of a distance from the nearest metro station. The Horizon Club's 'Happy Hour' offerings are incredibly diverse and plentiful, almost like a mini-buffet, with the cakes and desserts being particularly delightful. On the other hand, breakfast was relatively simple with fewer options. My beloved handmade steamed buns weren't as tasty as before, and they felt cold, possibly having sat out for too long, which affected the texture. I'm not sure why the brown sugar glutinous rice cakes (hongtang ciba) were soft throughout, lacking their usual crispy exterior. The Eggs Benedict were inconsistent; on the second morning, the egg was overcooked with no runny yolk, just a solid egg yolk, and the accompanying bread was unappetizing. Furthermore, the egg tarts were cold and not kept under a heat lamp, and the bread station seemed to lack even basic items like muffins, which felt a bit perfunctory. Restaurant management might need some improvement; during breakfast, I noticed a whole stack of plates still had water marks, indicating they hadn't been dried properly. Nevertheless, the service staff at the Horizon Club were excellent – friendly, courteous, quick to clear dishes, attentive to guests' needs, and particularly Ms. Liu Chun, the current Horizon Club manager, who was constantly busy, very dedicated and responsible. I also checked out the coffee shop on the ground floor. While the selection of dishes was indeed more extensive, it was also very crowded and noisy. The staff member who greeted us was still very enthusiastic despite knowing we were just looking around, though some other staff members appeared cold and unresponsive. Room service was excellent – very responsive and quick to fulfill requests. When they learned we needed to air out clothes, they thoughtfully brought a drying rack, which was a very considerate touch! Room maintenance was also good, with an automatic toilet and a Dyson hairdryer. The gym isn't open 24 hours; it closes after 11 PM, and guests cannot access it with their room cards after hours, which felt a bit restrictive for those wanting to work out later. In summary, this stay brought both joy and disappointment. I hope the hotel continues to improve and enhance its services, ensuring its long-term success and continued excellence.

Our last night before leaving Chengdu, and the location was fantastic. It was super convenient to stroll along the Jinjiang River in the evening, hit the bar street, and explore the night market for snacks. However, the facilities felt a bit dated, like a hotel from ten years ago. The toilet wasn't smart and had old scratch marks, the bathroom was cramped, and all the drinks and snacks in the mini-fridge were chargeable. Since we booked through Trip.com, we received a complimentary afternoon tea and welcome fruit. The lounge in the lobby was great for chatting or business discussions, giving the whole place a more business-oriented feel.

The room view was a delightful surprise – I could see cute panda bottoms right from the window, which really amplified the Chengdu experience! Booked this place based on a recommendation from a friend, and honestly, everything was pretty good for our two-night stay. My only minor complaint was the kettle; it had a lot of dust inside when I went to use it. Perhaps it's not frequently used by guests, but it still needs to be cleaned. During our stay, we accidentally stained the sheets and a chair, and someone came very quickly to take care of it, and we were promptly informed of the outcome – excellent service. Even though we stayed for two consecutive nights, the cleaning staff were very quick to respond when they saw the 'Please clean' sign. Thumbs up!

I booked this hotel for my trip, and the location is fantastic – right in the city center with tons of dining options nearby. There's even a decent hotpot place right by the subway entrance. The staff here are incredibly thoughtful and responsible. As someone new to the area, they were always ready to answer any questions I had, making for a truly wonderful experience. The rooms are spotlessly clean. It was really heartwarming to be greeted so warmly by the cleaning staff in the hallway every time – it genuinely felt like a home away from home. The front desk team was also incredibly thoughtful. They even offer a laundry service, washing and drying clothes if you're too busy sightseeing, and folded everything neatly in a basket – a truly thoughtful touch. There's also complimentary self-service freshly ground coffee in the lobby, and a cup before heading out in the morning is just what you need to feel refreshed. All in all, I had a very comfortable stay, and I'll definitely choose this hotel again on my next visit to Chengdu.

Must give the hotel's service and sincerity a big praise! The basic room originally booked was upgraded to the view room by Xiao Yang at the front desk after arriving at the store. The oversized windows can directly enjoy the city's beauty and instantly heal the fatigue of the journey. The room facilities are complete and new, intelligent temperature control, dry and wet separation bathroom are very practical, cleaned spotlessly, even the corners are not missed. The whole service is warm and not disturbed, from check-in to check-out are very smooth, such a treasure hotel is worth unlimited repurchase!

FAQs: Chengdu Metro

  • What are the operating hours of the Chengdu Metro? ⏰

The Chengdu Metro generally runs from about 6:00 AM to 11:30 PM. However, operating hours may vary slightly by line, so it’s always a good idea to check the schedule in advance—especially if you’re catching an early flight or heading out late at night.
  • How do I buy tickets for the Chengdu Metro? 🎟️

Tickets can be purchased easily from vending machines at all metro stations. For greater convenience, I recommend getting a Tianfu Tong Card, which is a rechargeable transit card that works on both metro and buses. It saves you from queuing for single-trip tokens each time.
  • Is there a mobile app to help navigate the Chengdu Metro? 📱

Yes! The official Chengdu Metro app provides route planning, live train updates, and service notices. Baidu Maps is also very reliable for local navigation, although it’s mostly in Chinese. For Malaysian travellers, having a reliable eSIM makes it much easier to use these apps on the go.
