Phuket Transportation Guide

Gambar Profil Penulis

Getting around Phuket is convenient and straightforward, with several major transportation options available for Malaysian travellers. The island is well-connected through a mix of public transport, e-hailing services, taxis, and rental vehicles, making it easy to explore popular areas such as Patong, Phuket Town, Kata, Karon, and Kamala. Travel times between these areas are generally short, although traffic can be heavier during weekends and peak holiday seasons. One of the main transport options in Phuket is the Phuket Smart Bus, which operates along the island’s west coast. It connects well-known beach destinations including Surin, Kamala, Patong, Karon, and Kata. This is a reliable and budget-friendly choice for travellers who prefer a simple and affordable way to move between beaches, though journeys may take longer due to multiple stops and fixed routes.

Tuk-tuks and local taxis are widely available throughout Phuket, especially in tourist hotspots like Patong. These offer quick and convenient rides, but fares are often higher and may vary by location or time of day. It is common to negotiate prices beforehand, as many taxis do not use meters. Malaysian travellers should confirm the rate before starting the ride to avoid misunderstandings. E-hailing services such as Grab are another popular transportation method across Phuket. Grab offers transparent pricing, cashless payment options, and door-to-door convenience, making it a preferred choice for many Malaysians. Availability is generally good in busy areas, although prices may increase during peak hours or rainy weather.

Motorbike rental is one of the most common ways to explore Phuket independently. It allows travellers to move freely and reach places that may not be accessible by bus or taxi. However, riding can be challenging during heavy traffic or wet conditions, and a valid international driving permit is required. Those unfamiliar with Phuket roads may prefer renting a car instead, which provides comfort and safety for families or groups. For Malaysian travellers who prioritise comfort, private car hire or pre-arranged transport services are excellent options. These offer a flexible schedule, spacious vehicles, and the convenience of direct travel between attractions. They are particularly useful for day trips, island-hopping transfers, or travelling with children and elderly family members.

Overall, Phuket offers a wide range of transportation choices to suit different needs and budgets. By understanding the strengths of each option—whether affordability, convenience, or flexibility so that Malaysian travellers can easily navigate the island and enjoy a smooth and enjoyable holiday experience.

Grab and Other E-Hailing Services

Source: Grab

Using Grab and other e-hailing services ( Bolt, inDrive) in Phuket is one of the easiest and most convenient ways for Malaysian travellers to get around the island. Both Grab and Bolt are widely available in popular areas such as Patong, Phuket Town, Kata, Karon, Kamala, and Cherng Talay. These services offer predictable fares and cashless payment options, which many Malaysians find especially convenient. While availability is generally high, the waiting time may be slightly longer in quieter neighbourhoods or during late-night hours.

In terms of pricing, Grab is usually more transparent compared to local taxis, which often operate without meters and require fare negotiation. Local taxis tend to charge higher rates, particularly in tourist-heavy areas like Patong. Grab and Bolt usually offer lower or moderate prices, though fares may increase during peak periods such as evenings, weekends, or rainy weather. To avoid these price spikes, travellers can plan trips during off-peak hours, walk to less busy pick-up spots, or check both Grab and Bolt to compare real-time fares.

Another benefit for Malaysian travellers is the ability to pay through cashless methods such as credit or debit cards linked to the app. This eliminates the need to carry large amounts of cash and ensures a smooth, hassle-free experience. Cash payment is still available if needed, but most travellers appreciate the convenience and security of digital transactions.

Local Taxis and Tuk-Tuks

Source: Go to Thailand

Local taxis and tuk-tuks are widely available throughout Phuket and remain a popular choice for Malaysian travellers seeking convenience and quick transportation. Phuket has both metered and unmetered taxis. Metered taxis provide transparent pricing based on distance and time, though they are less common than unmetered taxis in tourist-heavy areas. Unmetered taxis and tuk-tuks typically require passengers to negotiate the fare before starting the ride, and prices can vary significantly depending on the destination and the time of day.

Negotiating fares is especially important when using tuk-tuks in busy beach areas such as Patong. Travellers should always agree on a price before getting on, as drivers may quote higher rates to tourists unfamiliar with local prices. Understanding approximate fare ranges for common routes can help Malaysian visitors avoid being overcharged. In addition, it is advisable to be cautious of overly enthusiastic offers from drivers, who may suggest unnecessary detours or higher fares for short trips.

The chalet is really very good: spacious, beautiful, and with an amazing view. It has all the kitchen utensils, although we didn’t use them, and it was extremely clean. I definitely recommend it. The only slightly inconvenient point is the location. The chalet is located at the top of the property, so you need to rely on the reception to arrange transportation to the main area, where the reception and beach access are located. It’s not possible to walk down, as the distance is quite far. For those who rent a motorbike, this isn’t an issue and everything becomes very easy. However, without your own transport, it can be a bit uncomfortable having to depend on the hotel’s shuttle whenever you want to go down to the beach or leave the hotel.

I booked family room which is actually 2 rooms with connecting room. Room is clean, big and spacious. The swimming pool overlooks the hill which is nice. Service is good. The area doesn’t have restaurants within walking distance, though it’s not a problem as we drove. About 10 mins drive to Central shopping mall, which has plenty of options in terms of restaurants and retail shops.

A truly noteworthy stay! The hotel's courtyard boasts a beautiful green environment with a wide variety of plants. The pool water was also clean, with staff clearing fallen leaves first thing in the morning. There's a rich array of activities available at the hotel. In front of the hotel is a private white sand beach, which is very clean, and you can even go clamming during low tide. Breakfast offered a fantastic selection! However, the room's environment was a real letdown. The wooden structure inside gathered a lot of dust. The exhaust vent above the towel rack in the bathroom was completely caked with dust – it clearly hadn't been cleaned, which was quite disgusting. I can understand the yellowish water, given its hillside location, so I wasn't too picky about that. The TV was broken, but they quickly came to replace the screen.

Location: very convenient and easy to get to from the HKT airport, it’s about 10mins ride. Since it’s closer to the airport you would hear airplane sounds all the time but it’s fun to watch it time to time when you are at the beach! Room: very nice spacious room with a kitchen and balcony. We were able to relax at bathtub too. However we had many problems for our room. Shower and bathtub water wasn’t working and safety box too. Then phone kept ringing every few minutes, for some reason customers call came to our room which was super annoying. So we had to deal with them at the first night and we were not able to relax at all…but a manager dealt with sincere attitude and engineers came rough away and fixed shower problem which was nice. Reception manager called Narn was kind and nice he dealt the situation kindly and showed us a gesture of kindness. So we felt our stay was still lovely. Breakfast: There are great variety of foods including pastries, fruits and drinks. What I really like was that they change their menu everyday so we were able to tasty different type of food. We enjoyed it to the full and satisfied. Service: very nice stuffs with gentle smile and sincere and warm hospitality. They are all polite and kind. One time at the beach bar a girl kept telling me that I cannot order in room food service from our room so she kept telling me to come back and pay at the restaurant or bat which I did. But when I went back other stuffs told me I was able and order from our room..,that was quite inconvenient since it takes about 10mins walk from our room to the beach…so hope they can inform correct information to customers… But over all our stay was lovely with beautiful environment and clean ocean so we would love to come back here again if there is a chance!

Hotel conveniently located in Patong area.  Walking distance to main local attractions. Nice pool and gym  on the seventh floor.  Only downside is that window is not very well soundproof. Traffic is heavy almost all day and you could hear the noise through the night. Luckily, I passed out and could hear nothing..

Coconut Village is an old favorite of ours in Patong Beach. Clean rooms and it's cheaper because it's not right on the beach but only a short walk to get there. Breakfasts are pretty good as is the pool and the little cafe attached. Get anywhere in Patong from here for 134 baht by Bolt which is cheaper than a tuk tuk and has air conditioned comfort. Desk staff friendly and attentive. It is a three-star -bordering on 4-star accommodation that is unbeatable for the price. Ten minutes walk to beautiful sunsets, water sports, restaurants and more.

The resort has 2 pools, and most rooms are pool-access. The price before Chinese New Year was 440 a night, which is decent value for money. It's very close to Rawai Beach, with a 7-Eleven and sea-view restaurants right outside. Now for the downsides: 1. No clothes rack in the room, so no way to wash and dry clothes. 2. The hotel doesn't offer breakfast. 3. For a family of three, there's an extra charge of 150 THB for the child, but no extra bed is provided. 4. I subtly got the feeling that Chinese guests aren't particularly welcome. This is just my personal feeling and for reference only.

Very nice big hotel. We choose it because it seemed to be close to the beach but, the straight road that goes there ends up with the gate of kinda National Park and they require you to pay 200 bath per person! Hotel has the free transfer to the beach, so we just used it. By the way, if you’re ok with a little walk you can go to the beach with the airplanes from there (to avoid paying for the ticket or taxi around the airport ). Also you can enter the “park” freely after 5pm. Breakfast is ok, consists of the western and thai cuisine. Nice swimming pool on the rooftop. Free transfer from and to airport. The area compared to Patong or Karon beaches is a bit boring, but to me that was even the advantage, because the beach was not packed.

The hotel is clean and well-maintained, and the location is very convenient. However, the service did not meet expectations. The staff were not particularly welcoming and could benefit from improving their courtesy and customer service skills. I was given brunch vouchers stating that brunch starts at 10:30. When I arrived at that time, I was asked to wait while the staff made several calls and discussed the voucher among themselves. The situation felt disorganized and uncomfortable, and unfortunately, it affected my overall experience. I hope the hotel can improve its service to match the quality of its facilities

The rooms are individual bungalows nestled in the jungle, offering a fantastic environment with excellent privacy, separated from neighboring bungalows by trees. The resort's surroundings are incredibly beautiful and perfect for taking photos. The pool is open during the day, and there's a bar next to it where you can order drinks. You can walk directly from the resort to the nearby beach, which tends to be quite crowded. The package includes daily breakfast from 8 AM to 11 AM, as well as a choice of either lunch or dinner from 2 PM to 10 PM. The food quality is decent, and there are plenty of options to choose from.

I have stayed in Indigo Wireless Road Bangkok so was expecting a similar experience. I booked a suite as I had an operation the following day. I was unaware that Patong is a mini-Pattaya and Indigo Phuket is a party hotel. When I told reception that I couldn’t sleep because of the noise - see the attached sleep chart, they shrugged. I had booked and paid for two nights. I left after one. Reception happily informed me there could be no refund. Lesson learned. The Indigo Patong brand is a poor reflection of the hotel in BKK and the IHG brand. Avoid if you’re not going to be partying all night. They don’t care whether you can sleep.

I had an amazing stay at this hotel in Phuket! From the moment I arrived, the staff was warm, welcoming, and always ready to help with anything I needed. The room was clean, spacious, and beautifully decorated, with all the amenities to make my stay comfortable. The location was perfect—right on a wonderful beach and there were few good restaurants around. The breakfast offered a great variety of fresh and delicious options every morning. I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Phuket, and I’m definitely looking forward to staying here again in the future!

Renting Motorbikes and Cars

our shop at phuket airport

Renting a motorbike is one of the most popular ways for Malaysian travellers to explore Phuket independently. To rent a motorbike legally, an international driving permit (IDP) is required, along with a valid Malaysian driving license. Motorbikes provide the freedom to access beaches, markets, and scenic spots that may not be easily reached by public transport, but riders must exercise caution on Phuket’s busy roads. Traffic can be heavy, particularly in tourist areas such as Patong, Kata, and Karon, and road conditions may be unfamiliar to visitors. Wearing a helmet at all times and driving defensively is strongly recommended to ensure safety.

Below is a table summarising estimated rental rates for motorbikes and cars, along with approximate costs for common routes around Phuket. Prices are shown in Malaysian Ringgit (MYR) for convenience.

Motorbike rental rates in Phuket are generally affordable, with daily rates varying based on engine size, model, and rental duration. Many rental shops also offer insurance options for added security, though travellers should carefully read the terms to understand coverage for accidents or theft. For those who are not comfortable riding a motorbike or are travelling with family, renting a car is a safer and more comfortable alternative. Car rentals provide air-conditioned comfort, secure storage for luggage, and the ability to travel longer distances around the island with ease. Cars are especially suitable for groups or families visiting multiple beaches or attractions in a single day.

Private Transfers and Day Tours

Phuket Private Airport Transfer Service

Private transfers are one of the most comfortable and convenient transportation options for Malaysian travellers visiting Phuket. They provide door-to-door service and are especially suitable for families, groups, or travellers with large amounts of luggage. Unlike public transport or taxis, private transfers offer a fixed schedule and direct routes to hotels, resorts, or attractions, ensuring a stress-free journey. They are also ideal for early morning departures or late-night arrivals when other transport options may be limited.

In addition to private airport or hotel transfers, many companies offer day tours with private vehicles. These tours allow travellers to explore Phuket’s beaches, viewpoints, cultural landmarks, and nearby islands such as Phi Phi or James Bond Island at their own pace. Private tours are flexible and can be customised according to individual preferences, making them particularly appealing for Malaysian travellers who value comfort, convenience, and a personalised itinerary.

Money and Payments in Phuket

Source: Wise

Managing money in Phuket is straightforward, and Malaysian travellers will find a variety of payment options to suit their needs. The Thai Baht (THB) is the official currency, and it is recommended to carry a mix of cash and cards for convenience. Cash is widely accepted in markets, small shops, local restaurants, tuk-tuks, and Songthaews, while credit and debit cards are commonly used in hotels, larger restaurants, shopping malls, and for e-hailing services such as Grab and Bolt.

ATMs are readily available throughout Phuket, particularly in tourist areas such as Patong, Phuket Town, Kata, and Karon. Most ATMs accept Malaysian bank cards, but travellers should check for foreign transaction fees and ensure their card is enabled for international withdrawals. Currency exchange services are also abundant, and rates at reputable exchange counters or banks are generally more favourable than at smaller roadside booths. It is advisable to compare rates and avoid exchanging money in unregulated locations to prevent being short-changed.

For Malaysian travellers, cashless payment options offer added convenience and security. Many taxis, e-hailing services, hotels, and shopping outlets accept debit or credit cards, and some restaurants also support mobile payment apps. Carrying some small-denomination cash is recommended for minor purchases, tips, or transport fares where card payment is not possible.

Finally, it is wise to keep an emergency supply of cash in a safe place and to avoid carrying large amounts at once. By combining cash, cards, and mobile payments, Malaysian travellers can enjoy a smooth and worry-free experience while exploring Phuket.
