Phuket Transportation Guide

Gambar Profil Penulis

Getting around Phuket is convenient and straightforward, with several major transportation options available for Malaysian travellers. The island is well-connected through a mix of public transport, e-hailing services, taxis, and rental vehicles, making it easy to explore popular areas such as Patong, Phuket Town, Kata, Karon, and Kamala. Travel times between these areas are generally short, although traffic can be heavier during weekends and peak holiday seasons. One of the main transport options in Phuket is the Phuket Smart Bus, which operates along the island’s west coast. It connects well-known beach destinations including Surin, Kamala, Patong, Karon, and Kata. This is a reliable and budget-friendly choice for travellers who prefer a simple and affordable way to move between beaches, though journeys may take longer due to multiple stops and fixed routes.

Tuk-tuks and local taxis are widely available throughout Phuket, especially in tourist hotspots like Patong. These offer quick and convenient rides, but fares are often higher and may vary by location or time of day. It is common to negotiate prices beforehand, as many taxis do not use meters. Malaysian travellers should confirm the rate before starting the ride to avoid misunderstandings. E-hailing services such as Grab are another popular transportation method across Phuket. Grab offers transparent pricing, cashless payment options, and door-to-door convenience, making it a preferred choice for many Malaysians. Availability is generally good in busy areas, although prices may increase during peak hours or rainy weather.

Motorbike rental is one of the most common ways to explore Phuket independently. It allows travellers to move freely and reach places that may not be accessible by bus or taxi. However, riding can be challenging during heavy traffic or wet conditions, and a valid international driving permit is required. Those unfamiliar with Phuket roads may prefer renting a car instead, which provides comfort and safety for families or groups. For Malaysian travellers who prioritise comfort, private car hire or pre-arranged transport services are excellent options. These offer a flexible schedule, spacious vehicles, and the convenience of direct travel between attractions. They are particularly useful for day trips, island-hopping transfers, or travelling with children and elderly family members.

Overall, Phuket offers a wide range of transportation choices to suit different needs and budgets. By understanding the strengths of each option—whether affordability, convenience, or flexibility so that Malaysian travellers can easily navigate the island and enjoy a smooth and enjoyable holiday experience.

Grab and Other E-Hailing Services

Source: Grab

Using Grab and other e-hailing services ( Bolt, inDrive) in Phuket is one of the easiest and most convenient ways for Malaysian travellers to get around the island. Both Grab and Bolt are widely available in popular areas such as Patong, Phuket Town, Kata, Karon, Kamala, and Cherng Talay. These services offer predictable fares and cashless payment options, which many Malaysians find especially convenient. While availability is generally high, the waiting time may be slightly longer in quieter neighbourhoods or during late-night hours.

In terms of pricing, Grab is usually more transparent compared to local taxis, which often operate without meters and require fare negotiation. Local taxis tend to charge higher rates, particularly in tourist-heavy areas like Patong. Grab and Bolt usually offer lower or moderate prices, though fares may increase during peak periods such as evenings, weekends, or rainy weather. To avoid these price spikes, travellers can plan trips during off-peak hours, walk to less busy pick-up spots, or check both Grab and Bolt to compare real-time fares.

Another benefit for Malaysian travellers is the ability to pay through cashless methods such as credit or debit cards linked to the app. This eliminates the need to carry large amounts of cash and ensures a smooth, hassle-free experience. Cash payment is still available if needed, but most travellers appreciate the convenience and security of digital transactions.

Local Taxis and Tuk-Tuks

Source: Go to Thailand

Local taxis and tuk-tuks are widely available throughout Phuket and remain a popular choice for Malaysian travellers seeking convenience and quick transportation. Phuket has both metered and unmetered taxis. Metered taxis provide transparent pricing based on distance and time, though they are less common than unmetered taxis in tourist-heavy areas. Unmetered taxis and tuk-tuks typically require passengers to negotiate the fare before starting the ride, and prices can vary significantly depending on the destination and the time of day.

Negotiating fares is especially important when using tuk-tuks in busy beach areas such as Patong. Travellers should always agree on a price before getting on, as drivers may quote higher rates to tourists unfamiliar with local prices. Understanding approximate fare ranges for common routes can help Malaysian visitors avoid being overcharged. In addition, it is advisable to be cautious of overly enthusiastic offers from drivers, who may suggest unnecessary detours or higher fares for short trips.

We had a truly wonderful stay at Patong Bay Hill Resort. The food was absolutely delicious, and the staff’s hospitality exceeded our expectations – always warm, helpful, and professional. We enjoyed our stay overall and would happily return. The property is beautiful. The breakfast buffet and Madura restaurant was excellent and very tasty, with an amazing view of the pool . The staff took good care of us throughout our stay, from check-in to check-out. They also have a gym facility and it was fun to exercise with a sea view. For improvements, we had no privacy with room 315, the staff was always in front of the villa( check my picture) and it was a messy view… I suggested to have plantation around the villa.

Pros: Muslim Friendly Hotel as they have halal restaurants here. Nearby to Muslim Night Market. Nice pool. Superb clean. Complete amenities. Cons: Floor at room becomes wet. Maybe poor ventilation. There is smell coming out from shower’s water hole. Too many Arabs drinking alcohol here. Not sure if they’re Muslim.

Firstly, the place is absolutely beautiful — the perfect destination to relax, unwind, and truly rejuvenate. From the moment we arrived, we were surrounded by stunning scenery, a peaceful atmosphere, and a sense of calm that instantly made us feel at home. Secondly, the staff here are exceptional. Every single person we interacted with was extremely friendly, warm, and genuinely helpful. They went above and beyond to make sure our stay was comfortable and enjoyable, always greeting us with a smile and offering assistance whenever we needed it. The food was delicious and beautifully presented, and the room was spotless, comfortable, and thoughtfully designed — every detail was just perfect. I sincerely appreciate the entire team for their kindness, friendliness, and dedication. Thank you for making our stay so memorable. We will definitely be recommending this place to friends and family, and we look forward to returning in the future!

“Overall, our hotel stay was quite pleasant! The staff was cooperative and welcoming, which made a big difference. A few things could be improved — washroom slippers were not provided, only two water bottles a day for two people felt a bit insufficient, and card payment should definitely be an option. Other than that, everything was comfortable and enjoyable. The swimming pool was a plus.

Beyond my expectations, Hotel is strategically located and offers easy access to many needs. There is Restaurants and Mini Markets just outside the Hotel plus 7-11 just across the Street. You can find anything and almost everything there. Do not expect the Pool to be of Lap sized, its ok. There is Patong Beach the whole stretch about 200-300meters from the Hotel. For Muslims, this is a place where you will find many selections available. The Self-serviced Laundry is very handy for those travelling light and for a lenghty stay. Within minutes you will be right at the heart of Patong. Jungcelon Shopping Mall and Central Patong is just 10minutes walk. Place is safe and lively. No hustles. At least not for me.. We stayed 4 nights and although overall it was a good experience, we were happy to leave and move onto the next resort. The staff is very friendly and polite, however, the wait time to get clean pool towels or just toilet paper or water can be very long. For example, our pool towels didn’t dry overnight due to humidity and we called reception to bring us new ones and took over one hour. They didn’t place any more toilet paper or water when they did the room in the morning, so the next morning, we had to call reception again to ask for them. It’s obviously not a big deal as the resort is super busy so we understand there’s lot for the stuff to do, but those are basic things that are expected, especially considering the price. The buffet breakfast is ok, there’s lot of variety but the food is not exceptional, again, this is probably due to the mass production as the resort is super busy. Too many unsupervised kids, lounges too close to each other. Again, overall it’s ok but we have stayed at better resorts.

Staff at check in were more than happy to help us with our bags after a long days travelling and take us to our room. We had a pool access room and it was very clean and also nice and spacious, it had everything you would need in there. The pool was lovely and never busy, the private beach was a short walk and had a beautiful view and wasn’t busy whilst we were there. Overall our stay here was perfect I can’t fault it, I would highly recommend and would stay again myself.

This hotel has a lot of potential; however, it’s definitely not up to the standard of a 4-5 star establishment. The staff was incredibly rude, especially the restaurant staff at the Red Chopstick. We were not allowed to take food away from the restaurant, and the breakfast staff was very unprofessional. My wife was sitting sideways with one of her legs up, and a waitress touched her leg to ask her to put it down as if she were a child. This incident happened twice, which was both humiliating and extremely disrespectful. It’s disappointing because we see potential in this hotel—the rooms are simply beautiful. However, the staff lacks manners and absolutely does not know how to cater to their customers, which is not up to a 4-5 star standard. Additionally, the room access is inconvenient; they should have a shuttle service to the rooms. I personally will not be visiting this hotel again. I do hope they take our criticism seriously and make the necessary improvements.

Exceptional Service and Comfortable Stay I absolutely love this hotel! Every time we used the ”Do Not Disturb” button, the housekeeper respected our privacy and left a thoughtful note, ensuring we knew when she would return to clean the room. We never felt forgotten. The entire hotel staff was incredibly friendly, helpful, and kind. Every morning, we enjoyed a delicious breakfast. Alex, the trainee, went above and beyond to ensure we had a baby chair and utensils, always greeting us with a smile and making our stay incredibly pleasant. Special thanks to Bovwy for suggesting trips around Phuket that catered to our needs as travelers with a baby. The hotel manager was also incredibly accommodating, especially considering my husband's tendency to wake up late for breakfast. He even invited us to participate in New Year Blessings from Moncks. Overall, this hotel provided an exceptional experience, and we would highly recommend it to anyone looking for comfortable accommodations and outstanding service.

Renting Motorbikes and Cars

our shop at phuket airport

Renting a motorbike is one of the most popular ways for Malaysian travellers to explore Phuket independently. To rent a motorbike legally, an international driving permit (IDP) is required, along with a valid Malaysian driving license. Motorbikes provide the freedom to access beaches, markets, and scenic spots that may not be easily reached by public transport, but riders must exercise caution on Phuket’s busy roads. Traffic can be heavy, particularly in tourist areas such as Patong, Kata, and Karon, and road conditions may be unfamiliar to visitors. Wearing a helmet at all times and driving defensively is strongly recommended to ensure safety.

Below is a table summarising estimated rental rates for motorbikes and cars, along with approximate costs for common routes around Phuket. Prices are shown in Malaysian Ringgit (MYR) for convenience.

Motorbike rental rates in Phuket are generally affordable, with daily rates varying based on engine size, model, and rental duration. Many rental shops also offer insurance options for added security, though travellers should carefully read the terms to understand coverage for accidents or theft. For those who are not comfortable riding a motorbike or are travelling with family, renting a car is a safer and more comfortable alternative. Car rentals provide air-conditioned comfort, secure storage for luggage, and the ability to travel longer distances around the island with ease. Cars are especially suitable for groups or families visiting multiple beaches or attractions in a single day.

Songthaews, also known as local blue buses, are a traditional and affordable way to travel between Phuket Town and the island’s popular beaches. They are easily recognisable by their blue paint and open-air seating, offering a unique local experience for Malaysian travellers. While these buses are slower than taxis or Grab due to frequent stops and flexible routes, they are ideal for budget-conscious visitors who are not in a hurry and wish to travel like locals.

Fares for Songthaews are generally low, making them one of the cheapest options for getting around Phuket. Passengers usually pay in cash directly to the driver, and the exact fare often depends on the distance travelled. Although the buses do not follow strict schedules, they run regularly throughout the day, connecting key locations such as Phuket Town, Patong, Karon, Kata, and Kamala.

Private Transfers and Day Tours

Phuket Private Airport Transfer Service

Private transfers are one of the most comfortable and convenient transportation options for Malaysian travellers visiting Phuket. They provide door-to-door service and are especially suitable for families, groups, or travellers with large amounts of luggage. Unlike public transport or taxis, private transfers offer a fixed schedule and direct routes to hotels, resorts, or attractions, ensuring a stress-free journey. They are also ideal for early morning departures or late-night arrivals when other transport options may be limited.

In addition to private airport or hotel transfers, many companies offer day tours with private vehicles. These tours allow travellers to explore Phuket’s beaches, viewpoints, cultural landmarks, and nearby islands such as Phi Phi or James Bond Island at their own pace. Private tours are flexible and can be customised according to individual preferences, making them particularly appealing for Malaysian travellers who value comfort, convenience, and a personalised itinerary.

Compared to taxis or e-hailing services for long distances, private transfers offer better comfort and reliability, albeit at a higher cost.

Money and Payments in Phuket

Source: Wise

Managing money in Phuket is straightforward, and Malaysian travellers will find a variety of payment options to suit their needs. The Thai Baht (THB) is the official currency, and it is recommended to carry a mix of cash and cards for convenience. Cash is widely accepted in markets, small shops, local restaurants, tuk-tuks, and Songthaews, while credit and debit cards are commonly used in hotels, larger restaurants, shopping malls, and for e-hailing services such as Grab and Bolt.

ATMs are readily available throughout Phuket, particularly in tourist areas such as Patong, Phuket Town, Kata, and Karon. Most ATMs accept Malaysian bank cards, but travellers should check for foreign transaction fees and ensure their card is enabled for international withdrawals. Currency exchange services are also abundant, and rates at reputable exchange counters or banks are generally more favourable than at smaller roadside booths. It is advisable to compare rates and avoid exchanging money in unregulated locations to prevent being short-changed.

For Malaysian travellers, cashless payment options offer added convenience and security. Many taxis, e-hailing services, hotels, and shopping outlets accept debit or credit cards, and some restaurants also support mobile payment apps. Carrying some small-denomination cash is recommended for minor purchases, tips, or transport fares where card payment is not possible.

Finally, it is wise to keep an emergency supply of cash in a safe place and to avoid carrying large amounts at once. By combining cash, cards, and mobile payments, Malaysian travellers can enjoy a smooth and worry-free experience while exploring Phuket.
