Gambar Profil Penulis

Hi geng! 👋 It’s your fellow Malaysian here, and I just got back from an unforgettable trip to Taiwan – and I have to share my first travel tip with you: Use the MRT! 🚆

Whether you’re heading to Taipei for bubble tea, street food and shopping 🛍️, or exploring the chilled coastal vibes of Kaohsiung 🌊, the Taiwan MRT map will be your best travel companion. Seriously, it saved me so much time, money, and legwork.

I used the MRT to:

  • Sip bubble tea in Ximending 🍹
  • Catch sunsets at Tamsui Old Street 🌅
  • Soak in hot springs at Beitou ♨️
  • Zoom straight from Taoyuan Airport to Taipei (no traffic jam, syokkk!)
  • Chill by the beach in Kaohsiung’s Sizihwan Bay 🏖️

And the best part? MRT rides are super clean, affordable, and tourist-friendly. Plus, I could pay with just one EasyCard that works across most cities!

If you're planning your first trip (or even your 5th trip!) to Taiwan, this guide to the Taiwan MRT Map will help you travel like a local – and makan like a pro. 🍜😋 I’ll walk you through everything from MRT lines to ticket tips, operating hours, and real routes I used myself.

🏙️ Introduction to the Taiwan MRT

The Taiwan MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) is mainly based in Taipei and Kaohsiung, and it’s honestly one of the easiest ways to explore the cities.

In Taipei, it’s like a well-connected underground network that takes you everywhere – from the trendy streets of Ximending, to the beautiful Taipei 101, to the cultural treasures in Beitou and Tamsui. 🏯🌉

It’s super tourist-friendly with:

  • English signage
  • Voice announcements
  • Clean stations
  • Friendly locals who don’t mind pointing you in the right direction

If you’ve used the MRT in Singapore, you’ll feel right at home here (but colder, because aircon everywhere ❄️).

🗺️ An Overview of the Taiwan MRT Lines

If you're like me (a Malaysian who loves to explore stress-free 😄), then the Taiwan MRT Map will be your new best friend. It’s the key to unlocking two of Taiwan’s most exciting cities: Taipei and Kaohsiung. Let me break it down so you know exactly what to expect and where to go.

⏰ Taiwan MRT Operating Hours

The MRT runs daily from around 6:00 AM to 12:00 AM (midnight) – enough for most tourist plans.

⏳ Trains come every 2–5 minutes during peak hours, and around every 7–10 minutes late at night.

📅 Some stations (like Taipei Main Station) have last train notices displayed on big screens – super helpful before catching your final ride.

🚨 If you're out late at night (especially after night markets), just be sure to check the last train timing from your station.

📍 Final Travel Tips for Malaysians:

  • Don’t forget to tap in and out with your EasyCard
  • Try to avoid peak hours (7–9 AM, 5–7 PM) if you don’t like crowds
  • Use Google Maps or the Taipei MRT app for real-time directions
  • Always stand on the right side of the escalator – Taiwan punya etiquette, ok 😄
  • Take the Airport MRT if you’re arriving or departing via Taoyuan ✈️ – fast and super convenient!

💳 EasyCard – The Malaysian Must-Have! 😍

If you're coming to Taiwan, please get an EasyCard. Seriously, don’t waste time buying single trip tokens lah. 😅

You can buy one at:

  • MRT stations
  • Convenience stores (7-Eleven, FamilyMart)
  • Taoyuan Airport

💵 Price:

  • Card costs TWD 100 (non-refundable)
  • Top up as you go (minimum TWD 100)

🎁 Extra Bonus: EasyCard also works for:

  • City buses 🚌
  • YouBike (Taipei's rental bicycle system 🚲)
  • Convenience stores 🏪
  • Some attractions and vending machines!

🧠 Tip:

Hold onto it for your next trip – it doesn’t expire for years!

👀 Don’t forget to pre-purchase an eSIM or Taiwan travel SIM card so you’re connected the moment you land!

We stayed for a week this time, and every day we had to ask housekeeping for extra large towels because we showered twice a day. It wasn't until the last day that housekeeping asked if we needed extra towels. Also, when we checked in, the shampoo and conditioner were empty, and they hadn't replaced them. We had to call for them to be refilled. This is our third stay at this hotel, don't they keep records of guest preferences?

Wonderful service with very friendly and helpful staff. The view is great, but unfortunately we couldn’t fully enjoy it due to cloudy weather. Otherwise, we would likely have caught the sunrise. The location is convenient if you’re taking public transport. We drove instead, and the car park was quite difficult to navigate. It required a sharp right U-turn, and Google Maps kept re-routing us. That said, the staff were extremely helpful and even accompanied us to show us the correct way. The hotel is clean, but we noticed some cooking smells in the morning and a sewage smell late at night. The staff promptly provided an air purifier, and the situation improved after a while.

The hotel was spacious. However, the cleanliness of the room can be improved. Furthermore, it was really unacceptable that the table beside the bed had a bible book. It really creeps us out and there were even knocking sounds on the wall. Hope the management will read this and sort this out.

They have kindly upgraded us to rooms next to elevator with balcony for better ventilation. Even at lower level the view of Taipei is unbeatable. We like the wooden floor much better. Because of renovation at the separate bldg, they’ve used strong aroma to cover the smell. That side has carpet floor which will suit some of the travellers. A few boutiques at main bldg, selling special fashion & accessories. Hope we could stay for longer next time to read the exhibition at V floor. Those are precious history of how the hotel has developed since 1940s. Buses to Jiantan only operates on weekends- we as Japanese cannot read the sign & waited in the wind for 10+ min. Luckily a lady asked the concierge & figured out what’s going on. We took taxi instead.

Highly recommend the stay. The rooms were clean and spacious. Meals were very tasty and there was a very large selection available (including many vegan options). The spa experience was worth every penny,. We travel around the world and the massages we had here were absolutely the best ones. The staff is very friendly and accommodating. We loved the stay so much we've extended and upgraded our room for extra nights.

A few things in the hotel made me feel a little in Japan instead of Taiwan: - yukata available for use - bidet with seat warmer - LOTS of Japanese food options around (in the basement of the hotel as well as the Eslite building next to it) The staff are polite and friendly. Little/no problem with English but they have dedicated staff who can speak Korean and Japanese. We had the 2 double beds in the room to accommodate 2 adults and 2 toddlers (<5yo). The room was spacious (about 33sqm) compared to the other hotels nearby. This time round, the room decor feels a bit more modern. It has the necessities (safe deposit box, water kettle, some mugs, tea and coffees). Mineral water is provided but there are also water dispensers are on the gym floor and another floor. The laundry room (only 1 washing machine and 1 dryer, both coin-operated ) is clean. Dryer can dry the clothes in 1 round. Detergent is free for use. However, there is no view from the room (we can see the other rooms from our room). Location is directly above the red & blue Taipei Main Station MRT and directly opposite the High Speed Rail station . The hotel is connected to the MRT and the HSR station via the basement but there is a stairs (about 15-20steps) so it’s not so stroller-friendly). Overall, we love the hotel and would come back if we visit Taipei again.

Great place to stay! Very IG worthy and is near eating places and amenities. Only issue (which is quite uncomfortable at times) is the central temperature control - the whole hotel is set at 19-22 degrees even in cold weather - I cannot adjust the room temperature and have to intermittently turn off the air conditioning. On the big plus side is the breakfast. Amazing and definitely worth it!

Choosing hotels for my Taiwan trip took nearly a week because I can be quite picky about accommodations. ILLUME turned out to be the perfect choice, meeting all my priorities. From the moment I dropped off my luggage in the elegant lobby, I felt welcomed. The staff was friendly and even accommodated my request for an early check-in, allowing me to settle in two hours ahead of the standard 4 PM check-in time. I was assigned a room next to the sauna and steam room, which I appreciated for its convenience. However, there were some noises in the evening from nearby banquet events and guests doing laundry, but as someone who tends to stay up late, it didn't bother me at all. The gym is shared and well-equipped, typically not crowded except during peak hours when fitness classes draw in more guests. My room was clean and received daily housekeeping, although there were a couple of times when the cups weren't cleaned. I understand they might have thought I was still using them, so no complaints there. It’s also worth noting that there’s a 7-11 convenience store just downstairs, connected directly to the hotel lobby, where they sell Taiwan's famous branded cakes like 太陽餅 and 鳳梨蘇. Plus, there are numerous buses nearby, making transportation super convenient—I didn’t even need to rely on the subway! I really enjoyed the air conditioning—it was cool enough for a comfortable night’s sleep. Overall, I had a fantastic stay and will definitely return without hesitation!

Stayed here for 5 nights. Everything was great, rooms were equipped with necessary amenities and lots of hanging spaces. Toilet, shower and sink are separated, which was a nice touch so you won't have to fight for it. Toilet was also equipped with a bidet (major plus!). Overall, it was a decent experience, especially the wide variety of breakfast options which deserve special commendation. However, there are a few areas for improvement. The in-room cleaning details could be better. Also, the tall gentleman with yellow hair who was greeting guests at breakfast had a terrible attitude. When I walked into the restaurant without stating my room number, I was immediately asked to go back to the entrance. There was also no greeting when I finished breakfast, which was very disappointing!

Located near Daan metro and has a busstop right at the doorstep making it convenient to travel around via public transport. The room is quite dated but spacious enough for 2 pax. Air conditioning is weak in the mid of summer, can't seem to adjust it, might be central airconditioning. Breakfast is a simple fare, but the scrambled eggs was cooked perfectly! The location of the hotel is just right in the city center. If you would like to travel by subway, it’s an easy 7 minute walk. It’s a very small hotel without pool. First room category is quite small. If you stay 2 people will be very tight, no space to walk. Breakfast is not something to expect but they have smoked salmon which is quite nice. For the past 10 years, whenever I visit Taipei, I’d definitely book my few nights stay at Star Beauty. I wouldn’t say it’s the best but their prices were pretty reasonable with good bed and they upholds a standard of cleanliness. The nearest MRT station would be Jiantan but it’s probably a 10 mins walk. And about 13 mins walk to Shilin Night Market from hotel. Their room walkway is slightly dimmer but that’s no issue for me. We stayed on the 17th floor, and the shower pressure was unbelievably low – it felt weaker than a toilet flush. I reported this to the front desk. They asked if we'd like them to send someone to check it, but it was already past 9 PM, and we had already showered. Given we were only staying one night, I simply wanted to bring it to their attention, not necessarily request an immediate fix. Whether the hotel followed up to inspect or repair it after we checked out remains to be seen, and will be for the next guest to find out. Also, the pillows were quite soft. I asked the front desk if they had firmer options. The staff member who answered the phone surprisingly asked how many nights we were staying. After I replied 'one night,' she just said, 'Oh, we only have one buckwheat pillow and one memory foam pillow.' So, we had no choice but to try those. I'm still puzzled why my length of stay was relevant to the pillow inquiry.

The hotel is right next to Taipei Main Station (Exit M3), just a 1-minute walk away. The décor has a slightly vintage style, but the services are excellent. Each room comes with a personal AI box where you can check promotions, food spots, transportation info, or even play music. We also received coffee vouchers that can be redeemed at the 17 Café on the first floor , the coffee was great. The room is compact but comfortable and clean. Adjusting the hot and cold water, as well as the A/C, can be a bit tricky, but it’s not a big issue. There are convenience stores right next to the hotel, both 7-Eleven and FamilyMart. Highly recommended for travelers looking for a hotel just a short walk from the station.
