As a Malaysian traveller in Xi’an, I was truly excited to experience the Xi’an Metro. Much like the MRT in Kuala Lumpur, the metro here is busy yet incredibly efficient making it one of the most convenient ways to explore the city. What stood out to me most was how easy it is to reach Xi’an’s top attractions, local eateries, and shopping areas without worrying about traffic congestion. With the help of mobile apps and route planners, navigating the metro is simple and stress-free, especially if you’re using a reliable eSIM during your stay in China.

In this guide, I’ll share everything you need to know about the Xi’an Metro: how to buy tickets, key stations to look out for, the best routes for travellers, peak hours to avoid, and essential local etiquette tips. Whether you’re heading straight from the airport to the ancient city walls or planning a visit to the famous Muslim Quarter, this Xi’an Metro guide will help you get around with ease. Let’s get started!

🗺️ Overview of Xi’an Metro & Metro Lines

Xi'an Bell Tower

If you’re a Malaysian traveller familiar with the MRT in Kuala Lumpur, you’ll find the Xi’an Metro just as efficient—only with a touch of ancient charm. With its modern facilities, clean stations, and extensive coverage across the city, the metro makes getting around Xi’an simple and stress-free. This guide will help you explore the network with confidence and convenience.

🚆 System at a Glance

The Xi’an Metro currently has 9 lines in operation (with more under construction), connecting the city centre to major residential areas, tourist attractions, and Xi’an Xianyang International Airport. It’s fast, affordable, and one of the best ways to reach iconic spots like the Bell Tower, Muslim Quarter, and Big Wild Goose Pagoda without worrying about traffic.

🌈 Key Metro Lines

  • Line 2 (Blue): Runs north to south through the heart of the city, connecting key sites such as the Bell Tower, City Wall (Yongningmen Station), and Xi’an North Railway Station.
  • Line 1 (Red): Travels east to west, offering easy access to Daming Palace, Sajinqiao, and Banpo Museum.
  • Line 3 (Light Green): A convenient route for tourists heading to the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, Shaanxi History Museum, and Xiaozhai shopping district.
  • Line 4 (Teal): Connects northern and southern Xi’an, stopping near the Qujiang scenic area and Tang Paradise.
  • Line 14 (Purple): Directly links Xi’an Xianyang International Airport with Beikezhan (Xi’an North Railway Station), making airport transfers fast and convenient.

📍 Main Transfer Points & Interchange Stations

  • Beikezhan (Xi’an North Railway Station): A key transport hub connecting metro lines and high-speed trains for regional travel.
  • Bell Tower Station: The heart of the metro system and the ideal starting point for exploring central Xi’an and the Muslim Quarter.
  • Dayanta Station: The closest stop to the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, one of Xi’an’s most famous landmarks.

🧭 Traveller-Friendly Navigation Tips

The Xi’an Metro is designed with travellers in mind, featuring bilingual signs in Chinese and English. Ticket machines accept both cash and mobile payments (like Alipay or WeChat Pay). To make navigating easier, use Baidu Maps, AMAP (Gaode), or the Trip.com app for route planning and live updates. For seamless connectivity, ensure you have a reliable eSIM to access maps and travel info on the go.

🗺️ How to Buy Tickets, Xi’an Metro Card & Payment Methods

cara bayar metro chongqing

Getting around Xi’an by metro is straightforward once you understand how the ticketing system works. As a Malaysian traveller, I found it quite similar to using the MRT in Kuala Lumpur or the MRT in Singapore—efficient, affordable, and easy to navigate. Here’s a guide to help you pay for your metro rides smoothly.

🎟️ Types of Tickets Available

  • Single-Trip Token: Ideal for one-way rides. You can purchase these tokens from ticket machines at all metro stations.
  • Tourist Pass: Xi’an currently doesn’t offer a specific tourist metro pass, but single-trip tokens or rechargeable cards are perfectly sufficient for short visits.
  • Contactless Bank Cards: Most machines don’t accept foreign credit or debit cards, so it’s better to use tokens or a metro card instead.

🏯 Transit Card

  • Chang’an Tong Card: This is the main rechargeable transport card in Xi’an. It can be used on both the metro and city buses, making it convenient for exploring multiple attractions. Simply tap in and out at the gates—no need to queue for tickets.
  • Where to Buy: Available at metro station service counters and selected convenience stores throughout the city.

💸 Fares & Top-Up

  • Fare Range: Xi’an Metro fares start from around CNY 2 (RM 1.30) for short trips and go up to CNY 8 (RM 5.20) depending on the distance.
  • Top-Up Options: You can reload your Chang’an Tong Card at metro stations. The minimum top-up amount is typically CNY 20 (RM 13).

📲 Digital Payment

  • Mobile Apps: Alipay and WeChat Pay are the most commonly used mobile payment options in Xi’an. However, these apps usually require a local bank account. For Malaysian travellers, using the Chang’an Tong Card is the simplest and most reliable option unless you already have these apps set up.

Best Option for Travellers

For short stays, purchasing a Chang’an Tong Card is the most practical and hassle-free choice. Loading about CNY 100 (RM 65) should easily cover several days of metro rides without needing to queue for tokens each time.

⚠️ Things to Note

  • Rush Hour Crowds: Expect crowded trains during peak hours, especially around Bell Tower, Beikezhan (Xi’an North Railway Station), and Dayanta stations.
  • Foreign Bank Cards: Ticket machines generally do not accept them, so it’s best to carry some cash for top-ups.
  • Refund Policy: The Chang’an Tong Card can be returned for a refund, though policies may vary. It’s best to confirm details at the service counter when purchasing the card.

🗺️ Tips, Etiquette & Local Insights – Xi’an Metro

Xi'an City Wall Moat Smart Sightseeing Boat

As a Malaysian traveller in Xi’an, I was impressed not only by how efficient the metro system is, but also by how orderly and polite the locals are. Following a few local customs and etiquette rules can make your journey smoother and help you blend right in with the crowd.

🚶 Platform & Boarding Etiquette

When waiting for the Xi’an Metro, always stand behind the yellow safety line and form a proper queue. Allow passengers to exit before boarding—locals take this seriously. If you’re planning to get off soon, stand near the doors but avoid blocking others. Priority seats are clearly marked and should be offered to the elderly, pregnant women, or passengers with disabilities.

📵 Etiquette Inside the Train

Keep your phone on silent mode, and use earphones if you’re watching videos or listening to music. Conversations should be kept quiet and respectful. Eating and drinking are not allowed on the metro, so it’s best to finish snacks before entering. If you’re carrying a suitcase or backpack, keep it close to you and avoid blocking the aisles, especially during rush hours.

💡 Local Tips & Tricks

  • The most comfortable time to travel is late morning or early afternoon, when trains are less crowded.
  • Line 2 is great for exploring the city centre, with stops at Bell Tower, Yongningmen (City Wall), and Xi’an North Railway Station.
  • Line 3 and Line 4 are convenient for cultural attractions such as the Big Wild Goose Pagoda and Tang Paradise.
  • Major interchange stations like Beidajie and Bell Tower can get crowded—plan transfers a bit earlier or later to avoid the rush.
  • A small local tip: at Dayanta Station, exits can be confusing due to multiple attractions nearby, so check the station exit map before leaving.

🛑 Common Mistakes by Travellers

  • Forgetting to tap out with your metro card, which may result in extra charges.
  • Blocking train doors—this is discouraged and may delay the service.
  • Assuming cash is accepted—most ticket machines and top-up counters require a metro card or digital payment.

🧭 Local Habits

Locals in Xi’an commonly use Baidu Maps, AMAP (Gaode), or the official Xi’an Metro app for real-time route planning. Many people also top up their Chang’an Tong Card during off-peak hours to avoid queues. One thing I really appreciated was how locals respect personal space—even during rush hours, the atmosphere remains calm and orderly, making metro travel in Xi’an a truly pleasant experience.

Strategy location which is near with 钟鼓楼,开元广场。all within walking distance and just a mrt station in front of the hotel. Besides, walking through the underground can reach the night market, which contains a lot of local food. Besides, 回民街” just next to the corner. Great hotel services and amenities, they are helping us to collect 淘宝 before our arrival. Multi washing machines and dryer which you can use it anytime. 👍🏻 Strongly recommend this hotel for solo trip or even with family.

This hotel is very close to the subway station, which is a lifesaver when it's hard to get a taxi near popular attractions due to crowds, or during area lockdowns. There's also a commercial district nearby, making dining and shopping very convenient. The hotel environment is excellent. Everyone from the doormen and front desk staff to the housekeeping and guest relations teams is warm and welcoming, providing great service. Manager Chloe even sent a welcome fruit platter and arranged for a late check-out. The heating in the room was very strong, so there's no need to worry about the cold in winter. The swimming pool water temperature was also perfect. The only suggestion I have is that while there was a drink menu in the room with very reasonable prices, when I tried to order drinks late at night from room service or the front desk, it seemed the hotel didn't have any in stock.

This is a famous hotel in Xi'an, historically known for catering to international guests. The facilities are excellent, and the rooms are spotlessly clean. The beautiful surroundings, with their lush greenery, made for a pleasant stroll with our child. The service staff are highly attentive and professional. A special shout-out to the duty manager on Friday; she was absolutely amazing. She not only resolved our problem and eased our worries but also upgraded us to a suite. Her patience with guests was remarkable. We'll definitely be staying here again on our next trip.

This hotel's location is perfect to walk around the city wall area. The friendly staff are always ready to help. Especially Cici who was really helpful when I needed things to be delivered out. Drum and Bell towers are all walking distance away. Good selection from breakfast and overall really clean. They have afternoon tea that maybe a delight however, I didnt manage to have any since I was out most days. Used the gym once however their multifunctional machine was out of order. Loved the shower and the hot water was definitely good for the winter weather. Overall, would definitely stay here again when I return.

The hotel boasts an excellent location right next to the Bell Tower subway station, making it easy to walk to attractions like the Muslim Quarter and the Bell Tower. The rooms are clean and tidy, with complete amenities and comfortable bedding, perfect for short stays. The breakfast offers a rich variety of both Chinese and Western options, catering to different tastes. We even received a complimentary fruit platter upon check-in! However, some rooms can be affected by noise, and the room space is a bit small, which can feel cramped if you have a lot of luggage. Overall, it offers good value for money and is ideal for travelers who prioritize convenient transportation, though guests who require more space might want to inquire about room types beforehand.

Hotel is nicely located near Huiminjie @ Muslim Quater. Everything about the stay was pleasant except for the wifi. The connection was extremely slow. I needed to get some work done, and in the end my hotspot worked much better. Another issue was the centralised aircon system. During winter, it kept blowing warm air and the room felt quite suffocating. When I asked for help, the reception staff simply advised me to switch it off. Even with the aircon turned off, the room still felt stuffy. For those arriving by Didi, use the hotel’s main address from drop-off. If you use the “allocated” address shown in the app, the driver may drop you far from the actual hotel entrance and you’ll have to navigate the rest on your own. Overall, the stay was fine but these issues made it less comfortable than expected.

There are multiple disappointing things. The free ancient costume deal is pretty much useless because it only covers the clothing. If hair or makeup is needed, the price goes back to the same as the customer without the deal. No one walks around in ancient clothing with a modern haircut. There is no USB port on the wall for phone charging, a power adapter is required. The ceiling has water stains after three showers, see the picture below. When I checked out, Xiao Yang at the front desk gave me a souvenir and asked me to give a 5 star rating on the spot. I already booked the vehicle to take us to the station and the car was waiting outside. So I asked him to take the souvenir back and I would do the review later. He asked me to keep the souvenir. The housekeeper Xiao Liu was nice, left some snacks on our first day to welcome us and left a note on the places worth visiting. Even though we never met this housekeeper, our rooms were kept clean. The hotel building needs some serious renovation. The air conditioning is weak, so the rooms are still cold after I increased the temperature.

The environment is decent, and the venue is suitable for events and conferences. I even happened to catch a new car launch when I checked in. The room itself is quite spacious, but the furnishings and fixtures feel very dated. Not quite dilapidated, but definitely old-fashioned. The towels, in particular, were frayed and shedding. The cleanliness left a lot to be desired; it just didn't seem clean, especially the countertop around the bathtub, which looked like it hadn't been wiped down properly and felt very haphazard. Breakfast was just average, but the cleanliness of the restaurant tables and chairs was also quite unsatisfactory. Overall, it's okay for an event venue, but for personal stays, the room's hardware probably isn't even on par with a 400 RMB mid-range business hotel (and I paid over 600 RMB). The only highlight is the hotel's location at the delta, which allows for pleasant walks along the river. For those who prioritize modern facilities and up-to-date amenities, I definitely wouldn't recommend it.

I booked two nights here primarily for the excellent location. It's right next to the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda and the Grand Tang Mall, so after a long day of walking, we could easily head back to the hotel to rest. Joy City is also nearby. We received welcome fruits upon check-in, and the bedding was great, making for two very comfortable nights. The only downside was the soundproofing; you could clearly hear people talking as they passed by the room.

This is an older 5-star hotel with an excellent location. The front desk staff were very welcoming and helped carry our luggage to the room. It was surprisingly quiet at night; among all the hotels I've stayed in, this is one of the few where I wasn't bothered by noise. Perhaps it's because it was built a long time ago, so the walls are thick. The breakfast was also very substantial, offering most of Xi'an's local delicacies. Very satisfied.

We booked a Deluxe Room (70 sqm, with an open-plan layout featuring a sofa and bed in one spacious area) and a Family Room (which felt like four rooms in one, starting with a small living room, then the bedroom, followed by a dressing room, and finally the bathroom). The evening spread at the Grand Club Lounge was excellent, with themes changing daily – we enjoyed American and Korean cuisine during our stay. Both rooms were very large and comfortable. During the Christmas holiday, I traveled with my kids and booked the amazing suite. The room was super spacious, the balcony offered a wide view, and the bed was very comfortable. The day before check-in, the butler thoughtfully contacted us, and during our stay, the housekeeping staff observed our needs carefully, proactively providing an ashtray and A4 paper for my child's homework. The service was absolutely perfect! The breakfast was also incredibly rich, with all sorts of Xi'an specialty foods like Zēng gāo (steamed glutinous rice cake), Ròu jiā mó (Chinese hamburger), Hú là tāng (spicy soup), Yóu pō miàn (oil-splashed noodles), etc. The baked croissants were also delicious. There are many food delivery options nearby, and a robot delivers them right to your room door. I will definitely stay here again on my next trip to Xi'an. It's a highly recommended hotel! If I had to find a flaw, it would be the welcome music that automatically plays on the TV when you enter the room; it felt a bit disruptive. The hotel's overall design is modern, but the music was dynamic, too fast-paced, and a bit loud. Every day, the first thing I did when I returned to the room was to find the remote and turn it off. 😂

This well-established hotel, part of an excellent brand, has been operating for a remarkable eighteen years. The service quality is outstanding across the board, and all facilities are exceptionally well-maintained. It's evident that their management is highly rigorous and effective, which is truly commendable. The hotel boasts an excellent location, with convenient access to shopping and dining. Its comprehensive facilities include an underground parking garage and a swimming pool. Check-in was swift and the service was excellent. We were greeted with complimentary welcome fruit and specialty beverages, and our room was impeccably clean and tidy. The breakfast was delightful, offering a wide variety of options, and the steamed egg custard was beautifully presented. Don't miss the Tianxiang Pavilion Chinese restaurant on the ground floor; it's definitely worth a visit. The ambiance is lovely, and the dishes are truly exquisite – perfect in color, aroma, and taste. Their signature Maoxuewang is especially noteworthy, with its wonderfully spicy, numbing, fresh, and aromatic flavors! In summary, my stay at this hotel far exceeded all expectations. I stayed at this hotel during a business trip to Xigong University, and it was quite good. For around a hundred yuan, it's economical, practical, and offers great value for money. What really stood out was how clean the room was, especially the sheets which still had laundry tags – something that's often a concern with many budget hotels these days. This really put my mind at ease. After work, we even managed to squeeze in a visit to the nearby Datang Xishi Museum, which was lovely. Overall, it's excellent. . Man Xin Changanli Hotel Xi'an Bell tower was a gorgeous and modern hotel. The room was beautifully designed in warm colors and there was plenty of seating area--including a cute little tatami sitting area. The windows were floor-to-ceiling, with automatic curtains that move with a slight tug. The staff were very friendly. The view outside the window is an interesting picture of the city wall, but it wasn't very pretty--just the brick wall and little bit of the events on the top. The beds were too firm for me, but I'm used to softer beds. My friend said it was fine for her though. Despite how beautiful the room is, I would not stay there again. The temperature in the room would not go below 29c, even with the air conditioner turned on. When asked if they could come fix the A/C, the staff said this room was more ”natural” and people don't really use it, so there wasn't anything they could do. We had to open the windows to keep cool. Additionally, the air conditioner was so loud that when I first heard it, I thought someone was rolling a cart down the cobblestones outside the hotel window. It was almost as loud as the construction happening directly outside our window. Speaking of the construction, it didn't start until 7 or 8 pm at night and went through until 3-4am. Couldn’t close the window without turning the room into a hotbox, so it was extremely noisy between the sounds of the machinery and the workers shouting over it. I'm a light sleeper, so it was nearly impossible to sleep. Between the heat, the noise from the air conditioner, and the noise from the construction, I got almost no sleep during my three day stay. So it's a lovely hotel, but it's too noisy and uncomfortable.

The room is very comfortable, the service is very thoughtful and meticulous. I will choose the Four Seasons Hotel next time. The hotel's robot meal delivery service is especially popular with children. The front desk service is very good.
