As a Malaysian traveller in Xi’an, I was truly excited to experience the Xi’an Metro. Much like the MRT in Kuala Lumpur, the metro here is busy yet incredibly efficient making it one of the most convenient ways to explore the city. What stood out to me most was how easy it is to reach Xi’an’s top attractions, local eateries, and shopping areas without worrying about traffic congestion. With the help of mobile apps and route planners, navigating the metro is simple and stress-free, especially if you’re using a reliable eSIM during your stay in China.

In this guide, I’ll share everything you need to know about the Xi’an Metro: how to buy tickets, key stations to look out for, the best routes for travellers, peak hours to avoid, and essential local etiquette tips. Whether you’re heading straight from the airport to the ancient city walls or planning a visit to the famous Muslim Quarter, this Xi’an Metro guide will help you get around with ease. Let’s get started!

🗺️ Overview of Xi’an Metro & Metro Lines

Xi'an Bell Tower

If you’re a Malaysian traveller familiar with the MRT in Kuala Lumpur, you’ll find the Xi’an Metro just as efficient—only with a touch of ancient charm. With its modern facilities, clean stations, and extensive coverage across the city, the metro makes getting around Xi’an simple and stress-free. This guide will help you explore the network with confidence and convenience.

🚆 System at a Glance

The Xi’an Metro currently has 9 lines in operation (with more under construction), connecting the city centre to major residential areas, tourist attractions, and Xi’an Xianyang International Airport. It’s fast, affordable, and one of the best ways to reach iconic spots like the Bell Tower, Muslim Quarter, and Big Wild Goose Pagoda without worrying about traffic.

🌈 Key Metro Lines

  • Line 2 (Blue): Runs north to south through the heart of the city, connecting key sites such as the Bell Tower, City Wall (Yongningmen Station), and Xi’an North Railway Station.
  • Line 1 (Red): Travels east to west, offering easy access to Daming Palace, Sajinqiao, and Banpo Museum.
  • Line 3 (Light Green): A convenient route for tourists heading to the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, Shaanxi History Museum, and Xiaozhai shopping district.
  • Line 4 (Teal): Connects northern and southern Xi’an, stopping near the Qujiang scenic area and Tang Paradise.
  • Line 14 (Purple): Directly links Xi’an Xianyang International Airport with Beikezhan (Xi’an North Railway Station), making airport transfers fast and convenient.

📍 Main Transfer Points & Interchange Stations

  • Beikezhan (Xi’an North Railway Station): A key transport hub connecting metro lines and high-speed trains for regional travel.
  • Bell Tower Station: The heart of the metro system and the ideal starting point for exploring central Xi’an and the Muslim Quarter.
  • Dayanta Station: The closest stop to the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, one of Xi’an’s most famous landmarks.

🧭 Traveller-Friendly Navigation Tips

The Xi’an Metro is designed with travellers in mind, featuring bilingual signs in Chinese and English. Ticket machines accept both cash and mobile payments (like Alipay or WeChat Pay). To make navigating easier, use Baidu Maps, AMAP (Gaode), or the Trip.com app for route planning and live updates. For seamless connectivity, ensure you have a reliable eSIM to access maps and travel info on the go.

🗺️ How to Buy Tickets, Xi’an Metro Card & Payment Methods

cara bayar metro chongqing

Getting around Xi’an by metro is straightforward once you understand how the ticketing system works. As a Malaysian traveller, I found it quite similar to using the MRT in Kuala Lumpur or the MRT in Singapore—efficient, affordable, and easy to navigate. Here’s a guide to help you pay for your metro rides smoothly.

🎟️ Types of Tickets Available

  • Single-Trip Token: Ideal for one-way rides. You can purchase these tokens from ticket machines at all metro stations.
  • Tourist Pass: Xi’an currently doesn’t offer a specific tourist metro pass, but single-trip tokens or rechargeable cards are perfectly sufficient for short visits.
  • Contactless Bank Cards: Most machines don’t accept foreign credit or debit cards, so it’s better to use tokens or a metro card instead.

🏯 Transit Card

  • Chang’an Tong Card: This is the main rechargeable transport card in Xi’an. It can be used on both the metro and city buses, making it convenient for exploring multiple attractions. Simply tap in and out at the gates—no need to queue for tickets.
  • Where to Buy: Available at metro station service counters and selected convenience stores throughout the city.

💸 Fares & Top-Up

  • Fare Range: Xi’an Metro fares start from around CNY 2 (RM 1.30) for short trips and go up to CNY 8 (RM 5.20) depending on the distance.
  • Top-Up Options: You can reload your Chang’an Tong Card at metro stations. The minimum top-up amount is typically CNY 20 (RM 13).

📲 Digital Payment

  • Mobile Apps: Alipay and WeChat Pay are the most commonly used mobile payment options in Xi’an. However, these apps usually require a local bank account. For Malaysian travellers, using the Chang’an Tong Card is the simplest and most reliable option unless you already have these apps set up.

Best Option for Travellers

For short stays, purchasing a Chang’an Tong Card is the most practical and hassle-free choice. Loading about CNY 100 (RM 65) should easily cover several days of metro rides without needing to queue for tokens each time.

⚠️ Things to Note

  • Rush Hour Crowds: Expect crowded trains during peak hours, especially around Bell Tower, Beikezhan (Xi’an North Railway Station), and Dayanta stations.
  • Foreign Bank Cards: Ticket machines generally do not accept them, so it’s best to carry some cash for top-ups.
  • Refund Policy: The Chang’an Tong Card can be returned for a refund, though policies may vary. It’s best to confirm details at the service counter when purchasing the card.

🗺️ Tips, Etiquette & Local Insights – Xi’an Metro

Xi'an City Wall Moat Smart Sightseeing Boat

As a Malaysian traveller in Xi’an, I was impressed not only by how efficient the metro system is, but also by how orderly and polite the locals are. Following a few local customs and etiquette rules can make your journey smoother and help you blend right in with the crowd.

🚶 Platform & Boarding Etiquette

When waiting for the Xi’an Metro, always stand behind the yellow safety line and form a proper queue. Allow passengers to exit before boarding—locals take this seriously. If you’re planning to get off soon, stand near the doors but avoid blocking others. Priority seats are clearly marked and should be offered to the elderly, pregnant women, or passengers with disabilities.

📵 Etiquette Inside the Train

Keep your phone on silent mode, and use earphones if you’re watching videos or listening to music. Conversations should be kept quiet and respectful. Eating and drinking are not allowed on the metro, so it’s best to finish snacks before entering. If you’re carrying a suitcase or backpack, keep it close to you and avoid blocking the aisles, especially during rush hours.

💡 Local Tips & Tricks

  • The most comfortable time to travel is late morning or early afternoon, when trains are less crowded.
  • Line 2 is great for exploring the city centre, with stops at Bell Tower, Yongningmen (City Wall), and Xi’an North Railway Station.
  • Line 3 and Line 4 are convenient for cultural attractions such as the Big Wild Goose Pagoda and Tang Paradise.
  • Major interchange stations like Beidajie and Bell Tower can get crowded—plan transfers a bit earlier or later to avoid the rush.
  • A small local tip: at Dayanta Station, exits can be confusing due to multiple attractions nearby, so check the station exit map before leaving.

🛑 Common Mistakes by Travellers

  • Forgetting to tap out with your metro card, which may result in extra charges.
  • Blocking train doors—this is discouraged and may delay the service.
  • Assuming cash is accepted—most ticket machines and top-up counters require a metro card or digital payment.

🧭 Local Habits

Locals in Xi’an commonly use Baidu Maps, AMAP (Gaode), or the official Xi’an Metro app for real-time route planning. Many people also top up their Chang’an Tong Card during off-peak hours to avoid queues. One thing I really appreciated was how locals respect personal space—even during rush hours, the atmosphere remains calm and orderly, making metro travel in Xi’an a truly pleasant experience.

This Novotel is in a great location close to the Drum Tower and Muslim Quarter. The hotel has so many amenities like afternoon tea, well stocked umbrellas when it rains and washer/dryers. It’s very helpful to be able to wash clothes when traveling. The breakfast buffet is well stocked with a mix of Chinese and international options. There were also some Chinese options specific to Xi’an that I also saw in the Muslim Quarter. The room was comfortable and high tech. Stella at the front desk is the only one who spoke some English and was helpful from the onset to explain everything, answer questions and even helped me to order some food via app as I was unable to do it without a local Chinese number. The only weird thing is there’s no driveway for drop off so you can only get dropped off and picked up in the street.

The overall experience exceeded my expectations, definitely a five-star rating! The room was clean and tidy, and the bedding was soft, so I slept very soundly. The hygiene details were meticulously handled. The front desk service was warm and attentive, check-in was efficient, and any requests were promptly addressed. The location is convenient, with easy access to dining and transportation. The soundproofing was good, and it was very quiet in the morning. It offers great value for money, and I would choose this hotel again for my next visit. Highly recommended!

This hotel is absolutely worth a special mention! First off, the location is excellent, with convenient transport links. The accompanying garden is truly unique in Xi'an. The public areas are grand and spacious, and even though it's not a tall building, it has four elevators. Our room itself was fantastic – great size, layout, natural light, and a lovely view, truly feeling like a suite. But the most outstanding highlight is their service. From the doormen and front desk to housekeeping, everyone was incredibly polite and helpful. Any request we had was addressed immediately. We had arranged for a twin bed setup beforehand, and it was all ready when we arrived, which was very thoughtful! Specifically, on our last day, our museum plans changed, and we couldn't get back to the hotel in time for checkout. We spoke to the front desk, and they graciously extended our checkout time on two separate occasions. As an extra touch, the hotel breakfast offers small bowls of *paomo* (a local specialty), which was a nice little bonus.

We had an absolutely wonderful stay and were truly impressed by this hotel. Everything exceeded our expectations. The hotel is beautiful, modern, and feels brand new — everything is clean, fresh, and beautifully maintained. We especially loved the thoughtful details and the warm hospitality. The afternoon tea was a lovely surprise and gave us much more than we expected. The laundry service was also perfectly organized and very convenient during our stay. The rooms, facilities, and common areas are all elegant and comfortable. The reception team was excellent, very helpful and welcoming. Although English communication can sometimes be a little challenging in China, the staff always made a great effort to assist us and make our stay comfortable. A fantastic hotel with wonderful service. We enjoyed every moment and would highly recommend it to anyone visiting the area.

Very satisfied! Facilities: All the fixtures are brand new. The shower pressure is great and very comfortable. There's no old or worn-out feeling as some negative reviews mentioned, only understated luxury. Cleanliness: It's cleaned very well every day, and they even noticed we had a child and thoughtfully left two extra bottles of water, which was very attentive and considerate. Ambiance: The antique-style decor is in keeping with the age of the hotel, and both the kids and elders really enjoyed this style. Since we're in a thousand-year-old capital, of course, we want to stay in a hotel with historical charm! There's a bronze carriage in the lobby and Tang Sancai pottery in the room, giving a feeling of traveling back 5000 years. My child even said our hotel is like a museum! Service: From check-in to check-out, every staff member we encountered was smiling and had an excellent attitude.

The location of the hotel was amazing, close to the Bell Tower. There was also an ancient city wall protecting us ☺️ We came late at night, and check-in was fast and smooth. The breakfast had a wide variety of different foods. The rooms were good; however, there were multiple piles of long hair stuck to the wall, which we had to remove ourselves. The attentiveness of the cleaning staff could be improved. Overall, the experience was good.

Great location! Yuanjia Village restaurants are right downstairs, and there are free shows at night. The Bell Tower is just a short walk away, and an underpass leads directly to Muslim Street. The service was excellent, and the sulfur hot spring water in the room's bathtub was a definite highlight! Free parking is a huge plus. Highly recommended for those traveling by car!

International Exhibition Center/Chanba Xi'an|10.85km dari pusat bandar
My stay at Le Méridien Xi'an Chanba was, overall, a standard five-star hotel experience. Being a Marriott property, it has a certain youthful and vibrant energy. The hotel has been open for some years, and some of the facilities show signs of age, feeling a bit dated, but this doesn't detract from the overall quality of the stay. During check-in, the smile of one front desk staff member left a deep impression; their attitude was friendly and gentle, making for a very pleasant service experience. Upon entering the room, the overall comfort was excellent. The biggest surprise was the Chanba River view outside the window. The large floor-to-ceiling windows offered expansive views, providing a fantastic ambiance whether it was the green riverbanks during the day or the city nightscape in the evening. Sitting by the window enjoying the view was incredibly therapeutic. The room was fully equipped, and the bedding was very comfortable. There's one minor design flaw I'd like to mention: when taking a bath in the tub, the shampoo and shower gel dispensers are fixed on the vanity side, quite a distance from the bathtub, making them hard to reach while bathing. This was a slight inconvenience. Apart from that, all other details were very well executed. The pool is quite small. Overall, it was a very comfortable stay. The view is the biggest plus for this hotel, making it suitable for travelers looking to quietly enjoy river views and relax. It would be even more perfect if the placement of amenities could be optimized in the future.

This hotel has a very old-money vibe, with a predominantly Chinese-style decor. This time, I checked in at the lounge, and the overall experience was great. The ladies at the lounge were very professional. Both the morning and evening views had their own unique charm. The room itself was entirely Chinese-themed, and the atrium on the B1 floor had a wonderful ambiance. It's surrounded by Grand Joy City and the Sleepless City, so the facilities are comprehensive. There's direct access to a Starbucks Reserve from downstairs, which is very convenient.

This was the first hotel where I stayed for five consecutive nights. I'd go to Mount Hua and Xianyang during the day and return here in the evenings. Even though the hotel has been open for over ten years, the black mahogany decor in the rooms is still very well maintained. The huge lobby is incredibly grand; the only other hotel I've stayed in that can compare is the Zhongwu Hotel. The hotel's breakfast truly deserves a mention – it's incredibly varied, and the quality is excellent. They offer local specialties like 'Youpo Mian' (oil-splashed noodles) and 'Roujiamo' (Chinese hamburger), which taste just as good as what you'd find in a specialized restaurant. The attached Spanish restaurant is also authentically styled. The hotel service was great too; a minor issue upon check-in was resolved quickly, and they even gave me an extra breakfast. The hotel environment is also fantastic, with a resort-style garden. The back exit leads directly to the Furong Xintiandi commercial complex, and the front exit opens to Qujiang Relic Park, which is lovely for an morning stroll. It's also not far from the Tang Paradise and the Grand Tang Everbright City. For other destinations, there are subway and bus stations near the hotel. The only downside was that the TV signal wasn't great, with only a few channels working properly. However, since I was out late and back late every day, I didn't have much time to watch TV anyway, but I still hope they can improve it.

We chose Grand Barony Hotel Xi'an 🏨 for our trip, and overall it was good. The location is excellent, right next to the subway 🚇, making transportation very convenient. The scenic rooms offer views of Yongning Gate City Wall, and downstairs are famous shopping areas like Hopson One and Wangfujing. Upon check-in, the room wasn't ready at 3 PM and required another 40-minute wait. The hotel kindly upgraded our room, but I suggest the front desk adds more staff 🙎 during peak weekend check-in times. The hotel's design features a corridor-style architecture, which I heard won a Luban Award. While some people like this layout, I personally found the dimly lit public areas in the evening a bit depressing. The breakfast was absolutely fantastic, a blend of Chinese and Western dishes with a wide variety. The coffee ☕️ was good, and there were many Xi'an local specialties, with the Roujiamo 🥙 being particularly delicious 😋. The service was also good. It's an older hotel, but it was kept quite clean. The soundproofing was average. 🌈 Overall, a good stay.

My stay at Grand Hyatt Xi'an was absolutely fantastic, and a special shout-out to Vivian at the front desk! She made the check-in process incredibly efficient and thorough, patiently explaining all the hotel's amenities. Knowing I had an early flight the next morning, she proactively and thoughtfully arranged complimentary airport transfer, saving me the hassle of booking a car myself. After check-in, she even presented me with a special 'energy pack' filled with authentic local snacks from Shaanxi – a truly heartwarming and generous gesture. Her communication throughout was gentle and attentive, demonstrating full professionalism. With such amazing front desk service, I'll definitely choose this hotel again on my next visit to Xi'an, and I highly recommend everyone to stay here and ask for Vivian!

The hotel environment is really great, with lots of greenery and trees everywhere, making for a very comfortable stay. This time I stayed for quite a while, and the butler was wonderfully attentive throughout my stay, always responding promptly to any requests and handling them with incredible patience. They even helped me find something I accidentally left behind right away, which was a huge relief when traveling with kids. This is definitely a family-friendly hotel, and choosing a package for a long stay offers great value for money. The only minor suggestion is that the restaurant food was a bit bland, so we opted to eat out for a few days. The public areas were tidy and grand, and the attention to cleanliness was impressive, especially the small details. A special shout-out to the handwritten card in the family room for guests with children – it was a really heartwarming touch. The housekeeping staff even noticed we drank a lot of water and proactively left two extra bottles in our room with another handwritten note. I really enjoyed my stay. The hotel's style is a unique blend of cyberpunk and Tang Dynasty culture. Especially the room doors – I spent a while looking for mine, as they looked exactly like emergency exit doors. I totally didn't realize they were room doors! Very well hidden. The breakfast buffet was also plentiful and delicious. The hotel also offered a complimentary 1-hour travel photography experience called 'Jinghong Travel Photography'. Since this was a purely relaxing stay, I didn't bother with makeup or nice clothes, so I just went in thinking I'd get a few casual shots and didn't have high expectations. To my surprise, the photos turned out really well! The photographer was very dedicated and skilled at guiding poses 👍 Overall, I had a very pleasant stay at W. I'm now a fan of their conditioner, and the sheets on the spa beds were incredibly comfortable. Also, the hotel's ballpoint pens write so smoothly that I, uh, *accidentally* took one home with me 🤫 In short, highly recommend!

To be fair, since the hotel opened quite a while ago, the room's hardware facilities aren't its strongest suit. The curtain switch was a bit faulty, but it didn't really affect its use. However, the cleanliness was very well maintained. The front desk and staff were all very enthusiastic, proactively offering help and resolving any issues, so the service was absolutely top-notch. The hotel's location is excellent, right near the Bell Tower, with great transport links, making it easy to get around. However, because it's located within a courtyard, if you're on a lower floor, you can only see the old courtyard walls outside your window. But this seems to be a common issue with hotels in this area; I've encountered it at other hotels in Xi'an before.

Service: Every lady at the front desk was kind and extremely attentive. We checked out a bit late, and they extended our checkout time to 3 PM, which was really thoughtful. The staff even helped us with our luggage to the car and offered us drinks. Cleanliness: The room was tidy and comfortable, and the bedding and bath amenities were very clean. However, the pillows had a slight odor of hair oil. Environment: The surrounding area has convenient transportation. The Xigong University subway station is just a few minutes' walk away, including a pedestrian overpass. There are also street food vendors just a few steps away. My only complaint is that Xi'an surprisingly doesn't have shared e-bikes, only shared bicycles. Riding a bicycle to tourist attractions will make you question your life choices. I recommend taking a taxi or, if you're looking for a more affordable option, combining it with subway transfers.

I had a particularly satisfying stay this time! The hotel's location is excellent, making it very convenient for dining out and getting around. The front desk staff were friendly and efficient with the check-in process. The room was spotless, the bathroom had a great wet/dry separation with no odors, and the bedding was soft and clean. The soundproofing was fantastic; I couldn't hear any hallway noise at all at night. All the facilities were complete and working well, the air conditioning was quiet, and toiletries were fully stocked. The cleaning staff were thorough, and any requests were promptly handled. It's really great value for money, my top choice for business trips or vacations, and I've already recommended it to friends!

The bell tower The drum tower/The Xi’an Circumvallation Xi'an|0.86km dari pusat bandar
I did a lot of research for my trip to Xi'an and finally settled on this hotel. The location is absolutely unbeatable. Xiangzimiao Street is right downstairs, full of unique shops. It was so convenient to explore late into the evening and just walk a few steps back to the hotel. The biggest surprise was the fourth-floor terrace. Having breakfast there in the morning was a real 'wow' moment! It faces directly onto the Yongning Gate city wall, and the view is just incredible. Every photo I took looked great, and so many people asked me which hotel it was when I posted them. The breakfast tasted delicious, and I recommend the beef noodles. Honestly, just sitting there and eating felt so atmospheric. The room itself was very clean, the bedding was comfortable, and the bathroom's wet/dry separation was well-done. My only minor regret is that the bar street downstairs can be a bit noisy at night, but the hotel provides earplugs, so I was still able to sleep. Overall, it's excellent value for money, and I'd definitely stay here again when I bring my parents next time.

Right across from the Drum Tower, the location is excellent. The room was clean, tidy, spacious, and bright, with a separate wet and dry area in the bathroom. The staff cleaned punctually every day. When checking out, the front desk lady even asked if I needed two bottles of warm mineral water, which was very thoughtful. The only minor drawback is that the room isn't soundproof. However, I still love staying at Ji Hotel; I like its layout, the small tea table, and the black tea is good too.
