As a Malaysian traveller in Xi’an, I was truly excited to experience the Xi’an Metro. Much like the MRT in Kuala Lumpur, the metro here is busy yet incredibly efficient making it one of the most convenient ways to explore the city. What stood out to me most was how easy it is to reach Xi’an’s top attractions, local eateries, and shopping areas without worrying about traffic congestion. With the help of mobile apps and route planners, navigating the metro is simple and stress-free, especially if you’re using a reliable eSIM during your stay in China.

In this guide, I’ll share everything you need to know about the Xi’an Metro: how to buy tickets, key stations to look out for, the best routes for travellers, peak hours to avoid, and essential local etiquette tips. Whether you’re heading straight from the airport to the ancient city walls or planning a visit to the famous Muslim Quarter, this Xi’an Metro guide will help you get around with ease. Let’s get started!

🗺️ Overview of Xi’an Metro & Metro Lines

Xi'an Bell Tower

If you’re a Malaysian traveller familiar with the MRT in Kuala Lumpur, you’ll find the Xi’an Metro just as efficient—only with a touch of ancient charm. With its modern facilities, clean stations, and extensive coverage across the city, the metro makes getting around Xi’an simple and stress-free. This guide will help you explore the network with confidence and convenience.

🚆 System at a Glance

The Xi’an Metro currently has 9 lines in operation (with more under construction), connecting the city centre to major residential areas, tourist attractions, and Xi’an Xianyang International Airport. It’s fast, affordable, and one of the best ways to reach iconic spots like the Bell Tower, Muslim Quarter, and Big Wild Goose Pagoda without worrying about traffic.

🌈 Key Metro Lines

  • Line 2 (Blue): Runs north to south through the heart of the city, connecting key sites such as the Bell Tower, City Wall (Yongningmen Station), and Xi’an North Railway Station.
  • Line 1 (Red): Travels east to west, offering easy access to Daming Palace, Sajinqiao, and Banpo Museum.
  • Line 3 (Light Green): A convenient route for tourists heading to the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, Shaanxi History Museum, and Xiaozhai shopping district.
  • Line 4 (Teal): Connects northern and southern Xi’an, stopping near the Qujiang scenic area and Tang Paradise.
  • Line 14 (Purple): Directly links Xi’an Xianyang International Airport with Beikezhan (Xi’an North Railway Station), making airport transfers fast and convenient.

📍 Main Transfer Points & Interchange Stations

  • Beikezhan (Xi’an North Railway Station): A key transport hub connecting metro lines and high-speed trains for regional travel.
  • Bell Tower Station: The heart of the metro system and the ideal starting point for exploring central Xi’an and the Muslim Quarter.
  • Dayanta Station: The closest stop to the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, one of Xi’an’s most famous landmarks.

🧭 Traveller-Friendly Navigation Tips

The Xi’an Metro is designed with travellers in mind, featuring bilingual signs in Chinese and English. Ticket machines accept both cash and mobile payments (like Alipay or WeChat Pay). To make navigating easier, use Baidu Maps, AMAP (Gaode), or the Trip.com app for route planning and live updates. For seamless connectivity, ensure you have a reliable eSIM to access maps and travel info on the go.

🗺️ How to Buy Tickets, Xi’an Metro Card & Payment Methods

cara bayar metro chongqing

Getting around Xi’an by metro is straightforward once you understand how the ticketing system works. As a Malaysian traveller, I found it quite similar to using the MRT in Kuala Lumpur or the MRT in Singapore—efficient, affordable, and easy to navigate. Here’s a guide to help you pay for your metro rides smoothly.

🎟️ Types of Tickets Available

  • Single-Trip Token: Ideal for one-way rides. You can purchase these tokens from ticket machines at all metro stations.
  • Tourist Pass: Xi’an currently doesn’t offer a specific tourist metro pass, but single-trip tokens or rechargeable cards are perfectly sufficient for short visits.
  • Contactless Bank Cards: Most machines don’t accept foreign credit or debit cards, so it’s better to use tokens or a metro card instead.

🏯 Transit Card

  • Chang’an Tong Card: This is the main rechargeable transport card in Xi’an. It can be used on both the metro and city buses, making it convenient for exploring multiple attractions. Simply tap in and out at the gates—no need to queue for tickets.
  • Where to Buy: Available at metro station service counters and selected convenience stores throughout the city.

💸 Fares & Top-Up

  • Fare Range: Xi’an Metro fares start from around CNY 2 (RM 1.30) for short trips and go up to CNY 8 (RM 5.20) depending on the distance.
  • Top-Up Options: You can reload your Chang’an Tong Card at metro stations. The minimum top-up amount is typically CNY 20 (RM 13).

📲 Digital Payment

  • Mobile Apps: Alipay and WeChat Pay are the most commonly used mobile payment options in Xi’an. However, these apps usually require a local bank account. For Malaysian travellers, using the Chang’an Tong Card is the simplest and most reliable option unless you already have these apps set up.

Best Option for Travellers

For short stays, purchasing a Chang’an Tong Card is the most practical and hassle-free choice. Loading about CNY 100 (RM 65) should easily cover several days of metro rides without needing to queue for tokens each time.

⚠️ Things to Note

  • Rush Hour Crowds: Expect crowded trains during peak hours, especially around Bell Tower, Beikezhan (Xi’an North Railway Station), and Dayanta stations.
  • Foreign Bank Cards: Ticket machines generally do not accept them, so it’s best to carry some cash for top-ups.
  • Refund Policy: The Chang’an Tong Card can be returned for a refund, though policies may vary. It’s best to confirm details at the service counter when purchasing the card.

🗺️ Tips, Etiquette & Local Insights – Xi’an Metro

Xi'an City Wall Moat Smart Sightseeing Boat

As a Malaysian traveller in Xi’an, I was impressed not only by how efficient the metro system is, but also by how orderly and polite the locals are. Following a few local customs and etiquette rules can make your journey smoother and help you blend right in with the crowd.

🚶 Platform & Boarding Etiquette

When waiting for the Xi’an Metro, always stand behind the yellow safety line and form a proper queue. Allow passengers to exit before boarding—locals take this seriously. If you’re planning to get off soon, stand near the doors but avoid blocking others. Priority seats are clearly marked and should be offered to the elderly, pregnant women, or passengers with disabilities.

📵 Etiquette Inside the Train

Keep your phone on silent mode, and use earphones if you’re watching videos or listening to music. Conversations should be kept quiet and respectful. Eating and drinking are not allowed on the metro, so it’s best to finish snacks before entering. If you’re carrying a suitcase or backpack, keep it close to you and avoid blocking the aisles, especially during rush hours.

💡 Local Tips & Tricks

  • The most comfortable time to travel is late morning or early afternoon, when trains are less crowded.
  • Line 2 is great for exploring the city centre, with stops at Bell Tower, Yongningmen (City Wall), and Xi’an North Railway Station.
  • Line 3 and Line 4 are convenient for cultural attractions such as the Big Wild Goose Pagoda and Tang Paradise.
  • Major interchange stations like Beidajie and Bell Tower can get crowded—plan transfers a bit earlier or later to avoid the rush.
  • A small local tip: at Dayanta Station, exits can be confusing due to multiple attractions nearby, so check the station exit map before leaving.

🛑 Common Mistakes by Travellers

  • Forgetting to tap out with your metro card, which may result in extra charges.
  • Blocking train doors—this is discouraged and may delay the service.
  • Assuming cash is accepted—most ticket machines and top-up counters require a metro card or digital payment.

🧭 Local Habits

Locals in Xi’an commonly use Baidu Maps, AMAP (Gaode), or the official Xi’an Metro app for real-time route planning. Many people also top up their Chang’an Tong Card during off-peak hours to avoid queues. One thing I really appreciated was how locals respect personal space—even during rush hours, the atmosphere remains calm and orderly, making metro travel in Xi’an a truly pleasant experience.

Great hotel. Nice, modern and clean. The room was good too. Comfy bed with medium firmness. Great shower and toilet with auto wash. Aircon worked very well. The tv was a projector onto a big projector screen but we had no idea how to use it as it was in Chinese. The lights had some variations but none that let us control the lights we actually wanted on. This could be improved. Location was excellent to the Bell Tower area. Metro stop on the doorstep but a bit of a walk to the actual train line. Muslim Quarter a 10 min walk. Breakfast catered for the Chinese palette. My husband loved it.  There was a free laundry room which was very handy and we got all our dirty clothes washed and dried in about an hour. Check out going well when they gave us a bag of sweets which we thought was really lovely until we realised it was effectively a bribe when the staff (very politely) insisted we do a 5 star review there and then. That request ironically was the one thing I did not like at all. Do not ask try to force your customers to review what you want them to. Reviews are personal and should reflect their experience plus it’s rude!

Facilities: Cozy and comfortable Cleanliness: Spotless Ambiance: Pleasant fragrance Service: Attentive and warm. The hotel's location is convenient, and it's one of the best hotels I've stayed at in the Xi'an market so far. Transportation to any scenic spot is very easy. The staff service is well-trained, and the management actively assists employees in taking care of guests. It's excellent and a highly recommended high-quality hotel.

I stayed for 4 nights to celebrate my birthday while traveling in Xi'an. I asked the hotel if they could arrange a birthday cake, and they readily agreed! Not only was the cake large, but it was also delicious – even better than ones you buy outside. I'm so grateful to the hotel for that. The breakfast was also very substantial. From the front desk to room service to the breakfast staff, everyone provided wonderfully comfortable and thoughtful service. I'll definitely stay here again next time I visit Xi'an. The only minor drawback was that the swimming pool had some floating lint when I checked in back in April, but it cleared up by the third day of my stay.

Staying at Dongshe Hotel is a must when visiting Xi'an! The location is superb, close to the Bell and Drum Tower and the subway, making it incredibly convenient for sightseeing and enjoying local cuisine. The rooms are spotless, offering a great stay experience. Breakfast is rich and varied, catering to both Western and Chinese tastes, with plenty of local specialties available; there's even a complimentary afternoon tea. The hotel also provides free laundry facilities, which is a huge plus for long trips. Excellent value for money – I highly recommend it to all travelers.

Very satisfied! Facilities: All the fixtures are brand new. The shower pressure is great and very comfortable. There's no old or worn-out feeling as some negative reviews mentioned, only understated luxury. Cleanliness: It's cleaned very well every day, and they even noticed we had a child and thoughtfully left two extra bottles of water, which was very attentive and considerate. Ambiance: The antique-style decor is in keeping with the age of the hotel, and both the kids and elders really enjoyed this style. Since we're in a thousand-year-old capital, of course, we want to stay in a hotel with historical charm! There's a bronze carriage in the lobby and Tang Sancai pottery in the room, giving a feeling of traveling back 5000 years. My child even said our hotel is like a museum! Service: From check-in to check-out, every staff member we encountered was smiling and had an excellent attitude.

The room isn't huge, but it has everything you need, with a compact layout. What really stands out is the unlimited complimentary bottled water available next to the elevator on every floor, which makes the hotel feel very generous. The staff are also quite friendly. The Rou Jia Mo (shredded pork burger) at the hotel breakfast is absolutely delicious – much better than what you'd find at most small shops in Xi'an! The bun is chewy without being dry, and the meat is juicy; it really tastes great. The location is also convenient, about a five-minute walk to Metro Line 2. Overall, it's highly recommended!

I chose this hotel primarily for its convenient location. It's really easy to get to all the tourist spots I wanted to visit; I could just take a leisurely stroll there. There are plenty of food and drink options nearby for longer excursions too. Plus, seeing so many women walking around in Tang Dynasty costumes really added to the atmosphere! The room itself was spacious enough, making it a great choice.

My first time trying this place, and I thought it was great! I booked the cheapest room, which I think was a 16-person dorm, but the front desk lady upgraded me to a 12-person one. I even extended my stay for another night. The environment inside is quite peaceful. Everyone in the common areas is pretty respectful, except for a few loud shouts during billiards sometimes! Oh, and there were a lot of foreigners, couples mostly, chatting among themselves – it had a nice vibe. Since it was my first time, I wasn't familiar with everything and didn't prepare toiletries. When I went to shower, I even saw two guys coming out of the same stall, which honestly stunned me a bit. However, the privacy in the restrooms and shower rooms is excellent; they're all enclosed. The hot water comes on quickly, the water pressure is strong, and everything is clean. Everyone seemed pretty well-behaved. I mostly kept to myself, though, and didn't really interact with anyone. At one point, a foreigner asked me in English if he could use a stool. I honestly didn't understand anything he said, but I got his meaning and just waved my hand. He must have thought I was refusing him because he started to leave. I was so flustered I couldn't speak, just waving my hands around like fans, trying to convey my meaning. He must have seen my panic and understood, so he moved the stool. Only then could I relax and continue drinking my hot water alone. (I saw the front desk staff, both a guy and a lady, speaking English with the foreigners, and I was so envious! Ugh, I can only read English; I can't understand or speak it. I really need to practice my listening and speaking skills. I'll try my luck again next time.) Overall, I think it's a pretty good place. Oh, and its location is fantastic, right by the Bell Tower. But make sure you exit the correct subway station, or else a directionally challenged person like me will spend almost an hour wandering around trying to find it!

Love love love this hotel!!! I stayed with my friend in a 2 bed 2 bath room for 8 nights and it was extremely spacious and comfortable. The rooms were very clean and the beds super super super comfy ( I could sleep it in all day but my itinerary was super full). The photos online are quite true to the actual room. They had extremely good service too, starting from the airport pickup, where they were on time and the car was spacious and luxurious! We did the 5 seater sedan at RMB100, the price is comparable to a didi premium but the difference is that they would track your flight and made sure to you were taken care of. The hotel even had Butler service and was very attentive, I could even get them to help store my friend's birthday cake sent from the local cake shop and send it up to us when we were back. The laundry service was handy for a long stay, it was easy to use (and we were on the same floor so it felt like home to just go to and from our room to the laundry room). They even had special prices for popular shows, easily saving more than 50% of the listed price. Thanks for being a home away from home! PS the cats on the 2nd floor is super cute!

The location is pretty good. To the right is the never-sleeping city, and directly across is the Big Wild Goose Pagoda. Just across the road is Joy City. One of the lamps in the room was broken, and the overall decor felt a bit dated. Overall, it was acceptable; I'm not overly picky, even though it wasn't as grand as Westin hotels I've stayed at in other cities. Unexpectedly, when I went to a banquet at Furongge next door at noon, I suddenly realized that hotel was much grander and more luxurious, and even cheaper! In comparison, the value for money here was very ordinary, and they're both so close!

Arrived in Xi'an, and a light rain brought a welcome calm to the sweltering heat. The hotel staff were incredibly friendly, especially the ones at the entrance. When a car arrived, they'd help guests load large luggage into the trunk and even open the car door. Everything was handled with such thoughtful detail. As for the hotel's environment, it's simply beyond words. The serene garden right before your eyes offers a peaceful retreat amidst the bustling city. Its central location makes getting anywhere a breeze... And after a soak in the tub with those wonderfully fragrant toiletries, you're sure to drift off into a peaceful sleep.

This is an older 5-star hotel 🌟. There's no butler service, no smart toilet 🚽, no welcome fruit, and no free minibar… BUT it's right next to Xi'an City Wall's Yongning Gate, with several large shopping malls nearby. The delivery robot 🤖 brings food right to your room, and the lobby bar has delightful piano music 🎶 in the evenings. The room soundproofing is excellent 👍. I highly recommend the hotel's buffet breakfast – it's great value for money, and you can try all sorts of local delicacies. You absolutely *must* try the freshly made Roujiamo 🥙 from the chef; it's crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and bursts with juice. We stayed for six days and still couldn't get enough of it! 👍

High-tech Zone Xi'an|9.65km dari pusat bandar
Just checked out on July 11th, and I absolutely have to give this hotel a big shout-out! Xi'an has been scorching hot lately, like a steaming basket, but the moment you step into the lobby, a blast of cool air instantly revives you. The hotel is located in the Gaoxin CBD, and the Zhangba Yilu Station of Metro Line 6 is just a few minutes' walk downstairs. A taxi ride to the Grand Tang Dynasty Everbright City takes only about ten to twenty minutes. Although it's a bit further from the Bell Tower, this area is quiet, with skyscrapers all around. They look especially beautiful when lit up at night, making for great photo opportunities. Parking is also a breeze. We drove here, and the hotel has a public underground parking lot, which is free to use and even has EV charging spots, making it very friendly for electric car owners – no need to hunt for chargers when you go out. Food is definitely not an issue – directly opposite is Yitian Holiday Plaza, just cross the street. We had a Shaanxi meal at Chang'an Grand Theater (Gaoxin Yitian store), complete with Gourd Chicken and Brush Pastry. For convenience, we also tried Wei Family Liangpi downstairs, which was filling for around 20+ RMB per person. If you want something nicer, there's Haidilao, Xu Ji Seafood, and Xiaoxiang Pavilion all in the mall, with so many options you'll be spoilt for choice. The hotel's own breakfast is also highly recommended; the Roujiamo (meat burger) is freshly made, crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, and they also have oil-splashed noodles – eating them makes you sweat and feels incredibly refreshing. Indeed, the room is spacious, and the floor-to-ceiling windows offer an unbeatable view. The most thoughtful part is the powerful air conditioning; we even had to use the duvet at night because it wasn't hot at all. The amenities smell great, and they provided plenty of bottled water, which was super practical in this heat. The bed was really comfortable, and the soundproofing was good too; I slept soundly until morning. I originally wanted to go for a swim to cool off but didn't get the chance; I'll definitely make up for it next time. The service was also impeccable; they quickly helped us call a taxi when we left. For this price, to stay in such quality, it's truly worth it. Highly recommended!

Overall, the room was good. It's right next to the subway station and very close to the Bell Tower, making it super convenient for getting around. The only minor issue was that the air conditioning in the room was a bit noisy, but since I was so tired from exploring all day, I fell asleep right away, so it didn't really bother me. Service: Every lady at the front desk was kind and extremely attentive. We checked out a bit late, and they extended our checkout time to 3 PM, which was really thoughtful. The staff even helped us with our luggage to the car and offered us drinks. Cleanliness: The room was tidy and comfortable, and the bedding and bath amenities were very clean. However, the pillows had a slight odor of hair oil. Environment: The surrounding area has convenient transportation. The Xigong University subway station is just a few minutes' walk away, including a pedestrian overpass. There are also street food vendors just a few steps away. My only complaint is that Xi'an surprisingly doesn't have shared e-bikes, only shared bicycles. Riding a bicycle to tourist attractions will make you question your life choices. I recommend taking a taxi or, if you're looking for a more affordable option, combining it with subway transfers.

I did a lot of research for my trip to Xi'an and finally settled on this hotel. The location is absolutely unbeatable. Xiangzimiao Street is right downstairs, full of unique shops. It was so convenient to explore late into the evening and just walk a few steps back to the hotel. The biggest surprise was the fourth-floor terrace. Having breakfast there in the morning was a real 'wow' moment! It faces directly onto the Yongning Gate city wall, and the view is just incredible. Every photo I took looked great, and so many people asked me which hotel it was when I posted them. The breakfast tasted delicious, and I recommend the beef noodles. Honestly, just sitting there and eating felt so atmospheric. The room itself was very clean, the bedding was comfortable, and the bathroom's wet/dry separation was well-done. My only minor regret is that the bar street downstairs can be a bit noisy at night, but the hotel provides earplugs, so I was still able to sleep. Overall, it's excellent value for money, and I'd definitely stay here again when I bring my parents next time.

When checking out, the front desk lady even asked if I needed two bottles of warm mineral water, which was very thoughtful. The only minor drawback is that the room isn't soundproof. However, I still love staying at Ji Hotel; I like its layout, the small tea table, and the black tea is good too.
