As a Malaysian traveller in Xi’an, I was truly excited to experience the Xi’an Metro. Much like the MRT in Kuala Lumpur, the metro here is busy yet incredibly efficient making it one of the most convenient ways to explore the city. What stood out to me most was how easy it is to reach Xi’an’s top attractions, local eateries, and shopping areas without worrying about traffic congestion. With the help of mobile apps and route planners, navigating the metro is simple and stress-free, especially if you’re using a reliable eSIM during your stay in China.

In this guide, I’ll share everything you need to know about the Xi’an Metro: how to buy tickets, key stations to look out for, the best routes for travellers, peak hours to avoid, and essential local etiquette tips. Whether you’re heading straight from the airport to the ancient city walls or planning a visit to the famous Muslim Quarter, this Xi’an Metro guide will help you get around with ease. Let’s get started!

🗺️ Overview of Xi’an Metro & Metro Lines

Xi'an Bell Tower

If you’re a Malaysian traveller familiar with the MRT in Kuala Lumpur, you’ll find the Xi’an Metro just as efficient—only with a touch of ancient charm. With its modern facilities, clean stations, and extensive coverage across the city, the metro makes getting around Xi’an simple and stress-free. This guide will help you explore the network with confidence and convenience.

🚆 System at a Glance

The Xi’an Metro currently has 9 lines in operation (with more under construction), connecting the city centre to major residential areas, tourist attractions, and Xi’an Xianyang International Airport. It’s fast, affordable, and one of the best ways to reach iconic spots like the Bell Tower, Muslim Quarter, and Big Wild Goose Pagoda without worrying about traffic.

🌈 Key Metro Lines

  • Line 2 (Blue): Runs north to south through the heart of the city, connecting key sites such as the Bell Tower, City Wall (Yongningmen Station), and Xi’an North Railway Station.
  • Line 1 (Red): Travels east to west, offering easy access to Daming Palace, Sajinqiao, and Banpo Museum.
  • Line 3 (Light Green): A convenient route for tourists heading to the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, Shaanxi History Museum, and Xiaozhai shopping district.
  • Line 4 (Teal): Connects northern and southern Xi’an, stopping near the Qujiang scenic area and Tang Paradise.
  • Line 14 (Purple): Directly links Xi’an Xianyang International Airport with Beikezhan (Xi’an North Railway Station), making airport transfers fast and convenient.

📍 Main Transfer Points & Interchange Stations

  • Beikezhan (Xi’an North Railway Station): A key transport hub connecting metro lines and high-speed trains for regional travel.
  • Bell Tower Station: The heart of the metro system and the ideal starting point for exploring central Xi’an and the Muslim Quarter.
  • Dayanta Station: The closest stop to the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, one of Xi’an’s most famous landmarks.

🧭 Traveller-Friendly Navigation Tips

The Xi’an Metro is designed with travellers in mind, featuring bilingual signs in Chinese and English. Ticket machines accept both cash and mobile payments (like Alipay or WeChat Pay). To make navigating easier, use Baidu Maps, AMAP (Gaode), or the Trip.com app for route planning and live updates. For seamless connectivity, ensure you have a reliable eSIM to access maps and travel info on the go.

🗺️ How to Buy Tickets, Xi’an Metro Card & Payment Methods

cara bayar metro chongqing

Getting around Xi’an by metro is straightforward once you understand how the ticketing system works. As a Malaysian traveller, I found it quite similar to using the MRT in Kuala Lumpur or the MRT in Singapore—efficient, affordable, and easy to navigate. Here’s a guide to help you pay for your metro rides smoothly.

🎟️ Types of Tickets Available

  • Single-Trip Token: Ideal for one-way rides. You can purchase these tokens from ticket machines at all metro stations.
  • Tourist Pass: Xi’an currently doesn’t offer a specific tourist metro pass, but single-trip tokens or rechargeable cards are perfectly sufficient for short visits.
  • Contactless Bank Cards: Most machines don’t accept foreign credit or debit cards, so it’s better to use tokens or a metro card instead.

🏯 Transit Card

  • Chang’an Tong Card: This is the main rechargeable transport card in Xi’an. It can be used on both the metro and city buses, making it convenient for exploring multiple attractions. Simply tap in and out at the gates—no need to queue for tickets.
  • Where to Buy: Available at metro station service counters and selected convenience stores throughout the city.

💸 Fares & Top-Up

  • Fare Range: Xi’an Metro fares start from around CNY 2 (RM 1.30) for short trips and go up to CNY 8 (RM 5.20) depending on the distance.
  • Top-Up Options: You can reload your Chang’an Tong Card at metro stations. The minimum top-up amount is typically CNY 20 (RM 13).

📲 Digital Payment

  • Mobile Apps: Alipay and WeChat Pay are the most commonly used mobile payment options in Xi’an. However, these apps usually require a local bank account. For Malaysian travellers, using the Chang’an Tong Card is the simplest and most reliable option unless you already have these apps set up.

Best Option for Travellers

For short stays, purchasing a Chang’an Tong Card is the most practical and hassle-free choice. Loading about CNY 100 (RM 65) should easily cover several days of metro rides without needing to queue for tokens each time.

⚠️ Things to Note

  • Rush Hour Crowds: Expect crowded trains during peak hours, especially around Bell Tower, Beikezhan (Xi’an North Railway Station), and Dayanta stations.
  • Foreign Bank Cards: Ticket machines generally do not accept them, so it’s best to carry some cash for top-ups.
  • Refund Policy: The Chang’an Tong Card can be returned for a refund, though policies may vary. It’s best to confirm details at the service counter when purchasing the card.

🗺️ Tips, Etiquette & Local Insights – Xi’an Metro

Xi'an City Wall Moat Smart Sightseeing Boat

As a Malaysian traveller in Xi’an, I was impressed not only by how efficient the metro system is, but also by how orderly and polite the locals are. Following a few local customs and etiquette rules can make your journey smoother and help you blend right in with the crowd.

🚶 Platform & Boarding Etiquette

When waiting for the Xi’an Metro, always stand behind the yellow safety line and form a proper queue. Allow passengers to exit before boarding—locals take this seriously. If you’re planning to get off soon, stand near the doors but avoid blocking others. Priority seats are clearly marked and should be offered to the elderly, pregnant women, or passengers with disabilities.

📵 Etiquette Inside the Train

Keep your phone on silent mode, and use earphones if you’re watching videos or listening to music. Conversations should be kept quiet and respectful. Eating and drinking are not allowed on the metro, so it’s best to finish snacks before entering. If you’re carrying a suitcase or backpack, keep it close to you and avoid blocking the aisles, especially during rush hours.

💡 Local Tips & Tricks

  • The most comfortable time to travel is late morning or early afternoon, when trains are less crowded.
  • Line 2 is great for exploring the city centre, with stops at Bell Tower, Yongningmen (City Wall), and Xi’an North Railway Station.
  • Line 3 and Line 4 are convenient for cultural attractions such as the Big Wild Goose Pagoda and Tang Paradise.
  • Major interchange stations like Beidajie and Bell Tower can get crowded—plan transfers a bit earlier or later to avoid the rush.
  • A small local tip: at Dayanta Station, exits can be confusing due to multiple attractions nearby, so check the station exit map before leaving.

🛑 Common Mistakes by Travellers

  • Forgetting to tap out with your metro card, which may result in extra charges.
  • Blocking train doors—this is discouraged and may delay the service.
  • Assuming cash is accepted—most ticket machines and top-up counters require a metro card or digital payment.

🧭 Local Habits

Locals in Xi’an commonly use Baidu Maps, AMAP (Gaode), or the official Xi’an Metro app for real-time route planning. Many people also top up their Chang’an Tong Card during off-peak hours to avoid queues. One thing I really appreciated was how locals respect personal space—even during rush hours, the atmosphere remains calm and orderly, making metro travel in Xi’an a truly pleasant experience.

Location: Incredibly convenient! It's right near the H exit of Bell Tower Metro Station. After visiting the Terracotta Warriors, the bus dropped us off right in front of the hotel at Bell Tower Station. We could see our hotel as soon as we got off, which meant we could rest immediately – the location is just perfect! It's also very close to the Bell Tower and Drum Tower, so we just walked back in the evenings. Service: The staff in the lobby on the first floor, the front desk on the second floor, the cleaning aunties, and the hotel's personal butler were all warm, thoughtful, and had excellent service attitudes. Room: The environment is clean and bright, and you can open the window for ventilation. The sink drains very quickly with no strange odors, and the shower water pressure is great, which I really liked. The toilet is also clean and automatically heated, which is a nice touch. After a day of sightseeing, you can really get some good rest here at night.

The hotel's guest services proactively contacted me two days before check-in to add me on WeChat. Overall, my stay was excellent: 1. **Location & Transportation:** It's right next to Longshouyuan Station on Metro Line 2, making it convenient for both taxis and the subway. There's a decent-sized mall across the street, and Impressions City, along with the Yeweiyang night market street, are within a 10-minute walk – very convenient. 2. **Dining:** The hotel's breakfast buffet is quite extensive, offering a good mix of Chinese and Western options. They also feature local specialties like 'paomo' (crumbled unleavened bread in lamb broth) and 'saozi' noodles. On the second floor, there's a popular steakhouse with good food and reasonable prices. The in-room dining service is also affordable; I recommend the 'paomo' and 'roujiamo' (Chinese hamburger) – both are authentic and delicious. 3. **Room Facilities:** As an older five-star hotel, some facilities show their age and have minor issues, like a sticky door lock or a slow-draining sink. Personally, I found these easy to overlook. The 5th floor has an indoor heated pool, open daily, which is great for kids to play and relax. 4. **Hotel Service:** The service here is excellent, truly embodying a spirit of making guests feel at home. From the moment we arrived and they opened the car door and handled our luggage, to the complimentary suite upgrade and the fruit plate for my birthday – everything was perfect. My family was very satisfied with this stay, especially considering the great value for money. Highly recommended.

This is a well-established five-star hotel in Xi'an, boasting an excellent location right next to Xincheng Plaza, within the ancient city walls. You can quickly cycle to the Bell and Drum Towers from here. Despite its central location, it's nestled in a very quiet, private courtyard, giving you a sense of peaceful retreat amidst the hustle and bustle. Strolling through the courtyard, you can feel the profound historical changes Xi'an has undergone since the founding of the PRC. While some of the facilities inevitably show their age, you can tell they're diligently maintained. Upon arrival, an attendant will help carry your luggage to your room. The front desk staff are incredibly professional and courteous, resolving issues very quickly. Communication with Sofitel Legend Peoples Grand Hotel Xian was also seamless, and they facilitated the transfer of our luggage. I accidentally left a few items behind during check-in, but they handled the communication within minutes and had my belongings delivered to my new room at Sofitel Legend. Knowing our new room wasn't ready yet, they proactively helped with communication and offered a late check-out, making guests feel a profound sense of warmth, like coming home, especially during the New Year period. This level of service efficiency and attitude truly deserves praise. The breakfast spread is extensive, and the freshly made waffles are absolutely delicious – soft, sweet, and chewy. The only minor drawback was the crowd at breakfast during the New Year, but the tables were cleared quite promptly, and the cleaning staff worked incredibly hard.

I booked the Dongshe Hotel for my family visiting Xi'an, and they stayed for three days. They kept praising my choice of accommodation, saying it was incredibly comfortable. 1️⃣ **Thoughtful and Practical Facilities**: The room came with a humidifier and a spacious shower, with stable water temperature and good water pressure. The mattress was just right—not too soft, not too firm—and my family said they slept soundly for all three nights. The hallways and rooms were also spacious, making it easy to maneuver luggage. 2️⃣ **Impeccable and Reassuring Cleanliness**: My family reported that the cleaning was exceptionally thorough. The bedding and towels were soft and fresh, the vanity and mirror were sparkling, and the floors were so clean you could walk barefoot without a problem. 3️⃣ **Convenient Yet Quiet Location**: The hotel is right near the Muslim Quarter, so it's easy to step out for food and shopping. However, it's not on the main street, offering a peaceful retreat amidst the bustle. 4️⃣ **Proactive and Warm Service**: Hotel staff greeted them warmly every day, and there was even a hand-drawn map in the room, which was a lovely, thoughtful touch. Any small issues they encountered during their stay were resolved immediately.

I had a very pleasant stay at the Hilton Xi’an. The hotel offers excellent facilities, including a well-equipped gym and a clean, well-maintained swimming pool. The western breakfast was very tasty, with high-quality options. I also appreciated the beautiful statues and paintings throughout the hotel, which created a refined atmosphere. The staff were kind, professional, and always helpful. I would definitely recommend this hotel and would happily stay here again.

Fantastic location near the Bell Tower. Lots of restaurants and coffee/tea shops close by, and walking distance to Drum Tower and Muslim Quarter. To say it's completely terrible wouldn't be fair, but saying I was satisfied would mislead future guests. The hotel is about 500-600 meters from the subway, so it's not super close – a 10-minute walk. It's about 1 km from the entrance to the Muslim Quarter and around 800 meters from the Bell Tower. Walking distance is acceptable. Inside, the hotel rooms are quite small, and the window felt more like a fake one. There was quite a bit of damage inside, making me suspect this was an older hotel rebranded by Ramada. I booked it based on the Ramada name, but it really didn't live up to expectations; it was very different from other Ramadas I've stayed at. I ended up switching to another place last minute. The main photos the hotel uses are heavily Photoshopped. It's not a grand entrance just for the hotel itself, but rather a shared entrance for several businesses. While the hotel facilities are dated, the service was decent. They saw we were staying for a while and proactively offered two complimentary breakfasts, which I appreciated. What it lacked in hardware, it made up for in software, which did add a bit to the hotel's score.

This is a standardized hostel, with every detail meticulously thought out – a very mature commercial product. However, the quality of guests is hard to control. Even though it's off-season, the restrooms weren't very clean, and there was trash and an unpleasant smell (understandable for a commercial building with less ventilation) throughout the common areas. Plus, I noticed a girl smoking in the restroom (the innermost stall reeked of smoke). On the bright side, the blankets and shower rooms were quite warm, even better than a 3-star hotel I stayed in later. It also has a strong social atmosphere, making it suitable for young travelers on a budget.

Absolutely amazing! I've stayed in many pet-friendly rooms, and this one truly stands out. Right from the moment I stepped into the hotel, I felt how incredibly pet-friendly it was. There were so many pet-themed elements in the lobby, and the front desk staff were clearly dog lovers. Entering the room felt even more welcoming; a pet bed, dog bowls, and a pet toilet were all neatly arranged. They even thoughtfully provided a mat, poop bags, and a toy, which my dog immediately picked up and wouldn't stop playing with. Plus, there was a special pet gift package! The view outside the room was breathtaking, with an unobstructed lake view that shimmered beautifully with lights at night. For dinner, I ordered room service – the braised pork rice set for 38 yuan was such incredible value, both delicious and affordable! Around 9 PM, they even specially delivered complimentary tea and fruit, which was a really thoughtful touch. It truly felt like this hotel genuinely cares about its guests. The hotel breakfast was also fantastic, with a wide variety of options. All the facilities were well-equipped, including a pool, gym, and entertainment. After checking out, the front office staff kindly helped me take my luggage to the underground parking and load it into my car. I left feeling truly grateful for my stay!

Location: The hotel is located south of the city center. There's a bus stop right outside, making it quite convenient to get to the Bell Tower and Muslim Quarter. Facilities: The lobby and reception area have an artistic vibe, showing a clear effort in creating a pleasant atmosphere. The mattress was great and comfortable, but the pillow was uncomfortable and gave me a stiff neck. Cleanliness: It was alright. Everything being black made it hard to tell if it was dirty or clean. Service: Make sure to use the 'Do Not Disturb' sign, otherwise, the staff will knock on your door early every morning, which is incredibly annoying. However, if you leave without pressing 'Make Up Room', it definitely won't get cleaned. Also, the more expensive 'Superior King Room' is actually far less comfortable than the cheaper 'Comfort Deep Sleep Room'. The last picture shows a rip-off tobacco shop in the Muslim Quarter. Avoid it at all costs! They charge double the price of outside shops, clearly targeting tourists!

The rooms are spacious and clean, cleaned daily, and all the staff provide service with a smile and a wonderful attitude. The breakfast spread is rich, combining both Chinese and Western options, so you'll never struggle to find something you like. For late-night snacks, a robot can even deliver them to your room, which is both convenient and a warm touch. The hotel's warm and attentive service truly enhanced my trip to Xi'an. The Grand Hyatt Xi'an is absolutely fantastic! First off, the hotel feels very new and has a super stylish design. The service was excellent too; check-in was incredibly smooth, and every time I arrived by taxi, someone was immediately there to open the door for me. My room was on a high floor with floor-to-ceiling windows offering great views. The bathroom and shower are separate, and the bathtub is huge, making for a really comfortable soak. And I absolutely have to rave about the hotel's buffet restaurant – I loved it so much, the food was delicious! The breakfast selection is massive, so much so that you can't possibly try everything. The Roujiamo (meat burger) was fantastic, and they even had Japanese-style onsen eggs, which was a delightful surprise. The dinner buffet was equally impressive, with items like mini lobsters, and especially the desserts – they use high-quality ingredients, look stunning, and aren't overly sweet or cloying!

I saw mixed reviews online, so I was a bit hesitant but booked this hotel for its convenient location. After exiting the Bell Tower subway station, it was about a 10-minute walk. I found the hotel tucked away behind a row of street-level shops, through an archway. It's a real gem – quiet despite being in a bustling area, offering both easy access to attractions and a peaceful retreat. The hotel's location is fantastic; it's very close to the City Wall, Big Wild Goose Pagoda, and Furong Garden by subway, and also convenient for direct buses to the Terracotta Army and Huaqing Pool. The Bell and Drum Towers and Muslim Quarter are practically on its doorstep. Although the room wasn't huge, it was well-equipped, featuring a bathroom with a separate wet and dry area, a mini-fridge for storing food, and complimentary drinks and bottled water – all the daily essentials. They also have a gym, washing machines, and dryers available for use. The breakfast spread was generous too, with plenty of dishes, meats, eggs, dairy, and various staple foods to fill you up. My only minor suggestion would be to improve the power of the bathroom exhaust fan, as it seemed a bit weak. However, for this location, price, and level of service, I'd say it's excellent value for money. After all, when traveling, you can't expect everything to be exactly like home!

I stayed at this hotel during a business trip to Xigong University, and it was quite good. For around a hundred yuan, it's economical, practical, and offers great value for money. What really stood out was how clean the room was, especially the sheets which still had laundry tags – something that's often a concern with many budget hotels these days. This really put my mind at ease. After work, we even managed to squeeze in a visit to the nearby Datang Xishi Museum, which was lovely. Overall, it's excellent. The surrounding Datang Xishi shopping center is also very lively, with plenty of dining and entertainment options. The subway lines 5 and 6 right outside the door make it super convenient to get to the North Station, which is perfect for business travelers like us. Full marks!

Everything is good. They only have one washing machine and heater. So we need to wait for some time to wash our cloths as we stay over there for one weeks. Remarkable service from Soon Xiao Ni and the crew provide daily breakfast. She is professionalism, attention to detail, and kindness made a big difference. I truly appreciate her dedication to her works.

The hotel is located on Xiangzimiao Street near Yongning Gate in Xi'an, next to Defu Lane. It is simple and fashionable. There are many bars, restaurants, dessert shops and coffee shops downstairs, which is very suitable for young people. The hotel service is very thoughtful. The day before yesterday, the lady was very gentle and helped me change the room once. She also gave me a foot bath bucket, which was very thoughtful. The hotel's breakfast is also very delicious, with many varieties and good taste. The double portion is enough for a family of three. The child liked it very much and said he would stay in this hotel next time when he left.

The hotel's location is good, but the Baidu navigation isn't great. I hope they can communicate with the map maker. The breakfast was quite rich, with fruits, vegetables, snacks, porridge, milk, soy milk, yogurt, freshly cooked rice noodles, and even freshly ground coffee. However, I saw a woman using her bare hands to pull several sausages out of a plastic bag... I can't imagine it anymore. I hope they'll use gloves, tongs, plates, etc. when adding breakfast items in the future, and improve management.
