I stayed at Marco Polo Hostel for one week after reading many positive reviews. Here’s my honest take:
📍 Location (10/10):
The location is perfect—right in the city center. It’s just a 5–8 minute walk from both Metro 2 (where the hostel is) and Metro 3 / Deak Ferenc Ter (for the 100E airport bus). Couldn’t ask for better.
👋 First Impression & Check-in:
I arrived early at 9 AM on Christmas Day (Dec 25), well before the 2 PM check-in. A friendly staff member (chubby, helpful) allowed me to leave my luggage in the storage room—a very kind gesture that started my stay on a positive note. When I returned to check in, there was a small confusion about my booking (I accidentally booked for 2 people in a 12-bed dorm instead of 1), but the staff handled it calmly and professionally. They also helped sort out a postal code issue for my Hong Kong details—thank you!
🛏 Room & Sleep:
I was assigned beds 3 & 4 in a 2nd-floor dorm. The bunk beds are subdivided, offering decent privacy. Noise was minimal—maybe 10–15 minutes of understandable movement here and there, but nothing disruptive. Most guests were European ( students, southeast Asians and Europeans) staying short-term. Male and female dorms are separate.
🚿 Bathrooms & Facilities:
All showers worked perfectly—good hot/cold water. Remember to bring your own towel and toiletries. As a backpacker, I was prepared, but it’s worth noting.
🍞 Breakfast:
Available for 3200 HUF. Simple but satisfying—fresh, hand-made bread was delicious. I’ve never eaten so much bread in my life, and I mean that in a good way!
💧 Water & Extras:
Bottled water is available for 500 HUF. The friendly slim staff even gave me a discount when I bought five bottles. Tap water in Hungary is drinkable, so you can refill if you prefer. I also appreciated the staff’s fluency in English—communication was never an issue.
🔑 Small Issues Handled Well:
Once I locked myself out of my room, and they promptly lent me a spare key. My key card occasionally failed, but they fixed it in under a minute. The team is flexible and quick to help.
❤ Nice Touch:
During check-in, the staff introduced a charity donation for kids in Hungary. I donated for the first time here—felt good to contribute.
📌 Final Tips:
Read the house rules posted near the counter. Bring your own toiletries and towel. The hostel is well-run, clean, and staffed by helpful, English-speaking professionals.
✅ Overall:
Great value for money, excellent location, and genuinely helpful staff. I’d happily stay again and recommend it to fellow travelers. I will definitely come back here for my solo travel!
Lovely place. Highly recommend! If you’re looking for a proper warm place to stay in budapest, this is definitely your best choice!
The room, lobby and kitchen are super clean and tidy. The hotel staffs are welcoming.
The location is perfect, where you can find a supermarket within 2 min walk and the tram station within 5 min walk!
Also the breakfast are delicious and well-priced! What a great deal!
Great location, great atmosphere, great staff and great breakfast! I was able to relax on my bunker without other bunk mates bothering me, and breakfast had a variety of fresh veggie options.
The only concern I had was that the plugs inside the bunks did not really work for my Type C to A plug converter, and it kept falling out multiple times. I was able to charge and use the plug in the common areas, so it wasn’t that grave of a problem.
Great Spot for Travelers — Just Be Mindful of Dorm Life
I stayed here during my trip and really loved the location — super central and easy to get around. The staff were welcoming and the place was clean, which I really appreciated after long days of exploring.
The only downside was the shared dorm experience. One guest came back very late, turned on the lights, talked loudly on the phone, and unfortunately got sick in the bathroom. It made it a bit hard to get proper rest.
Still, the hostel itself is great. If you’re a light sleeper or prefer quiet nights, a private room might be worth considering!
I had a pleasant stay at A&O Hostel Budapest. The service was good and the staff were friendly and helpful throughout my stay. Luggage storage facilities are available, which was very convenient. Overall, a comfortable and hassle-free experience.
Nice small room perfect for sleeping after exploring the city the whole day. The neighbours don't make too much noise, the hotel is in the city centre so it's close to every major attractions in Budapest. It's also close to the subway. The rooms and bathrooms are clean. I recommend it for someone who wants to spend a weekend or longer in Budapest
I stayed in an 8-bed mixed dorm. Overall everything was good, but it could be a bit noisy at times. People were frequently coming in and out, and when they were packing or taking their belongings it could get quite loud. Some guests also spoke quite loudly, which sometimes disturbed those who were resting. However, I understand that this is quite normal when sharing a mixed dorm with several people.
The hostel itself is easy to find, and the staff were very polite and friendly. The only downside was that the bathroom was a little dirty.
The location is very central and beside underground station.
The building is really old, the entrance scares a bit, smalls a bit bad but when you get the reception it will be better.
The accommodation was ok, clean bed, including towel and they put in your bed a small welcome chocolate which is really kind :)
In the kitchen there is tea, sugar, and you can prepare your on coffee because there is a stuff for that. There is a hair dryer in the toilet.
the whole stuff is very helpful and kind
location is incredible
with rooms, you either get great one or you get stuck with not good ones but that depend on your luck, one room we got wasn't cleaned at all but we told them and they solved problem immediately
the area for hanging around is soo good it's very chill and cozy and atmosphere in hostel is very friendly, they have guest kitchen which has everything you need but the state of kitchen mostly depends on people who use it but nevertheless it's good
they have everything you need it's very convenient
would stay here again
Terrace is awesome, staff friendly. Vacak the cat is awesome too. This hostel is a great option to spend some time on the island, had a good night sleep and it was clean. Often though staff can be missing from the reception during the stated reception hours, and nearby is more of a party scene with few quality dining options. The 400ft Costa coffee capsules aren't exactly good either, so there is some space for improvement compared to some of the newer hostels in town.

XXuehuasu!Excellent! My roommates were all considerate too, so I slept really well all three nights! The staff were very dedicated. A special shout-out to a young man at the front desk – my small bag fell into the bed frame, and he helped me retrieve it with a great attitude. I really appreciate it! The environment was very clean. I initially found some trash under the mattress, but the cleaning lady immediately took care of it and replaced my sheets with new ones. Highly recommended!
IIreneaileenliExcellent location, walkable to many places in downtown. Restaurants, exchangers and groceries nearby. Metro station Oktogon is right nextdoor. The hostel provides free breakfast, if you spend over 4 euros at the bar at dinner time you also get free dinner. There's a kitchen area in each room unit free to use as well.
JJoe0412Did not sleep well here at all. There is no privacy in the room, it's not expensive or difficult to put up some sheets or curtains. Very poor effort. It's like sharing a room with your siblings all over again. Very thin walls too so the next door group kept us awake
It's supposed to be quiet after 10pm but they all late check in, as a result I was woken by 2am check ins. The socket next to my bed didn't work, neither did the lamp. The pillow is dreadful. The bed is ok. Window didn't close fully and no curtains so sunrise woke me up.
Excellent kitchen, comfortable lounge areas, 3 showers & 1 bathroom. All cleaned reasonably well. Check in was easy enough, she is very friendly.
The building is absolutely beautiful. The entrance is next to PIZZA ME and a money exchange/kebab store. Supermarkets nearby. Metro & tram nearby. It is in an excellent location.
It was cheap and actually good value, I just didn't sleep well
If you like privacy and quiet then maybe give this one a swerve
GGuest UserThe room was very nice and the decoration was beautiful. The courtyard had a fresh feeling. There were tables and hanging chairs, and the style of Baroque architecture. It was very nice. The price was also affordable.
GGuest UserIt went really well. We arrived in the afternoon and checked in. They were very kind on our last day, holding our luggage for free until we left. The room was nice and clean, and the bathroom had everything (even soap). Perhaps the only downside was that there was only one towel per person, which was a bit inconvenient for washing your hair.
JJoe0412Not a hostel to get any sleep in. But excellent for the airport bus.
Hostel is on a busy main road, lots of traffic noise. Privacy curtains aren't well attached and don't block enough light. The beds are incredibly noisy and the room was hot and stuffy. Sheets not cleaned
Service was excellent. The man was so so friendly and kind. Kitchen well equipped. Free tea & coffee. Shower very basic and toilet was good. Just 2 showers and toilets for many people. ...
100E bus is 2 mins away. Metro, tram and bus all nearby. Tone of food options. Wifi was ok
Towel is 3 euros to rent. Bring your own padlock
