We arrived at the Sumaq Hotel to a very efficient and gracious check-in process. Purple corn drinks were provided - very refreshing - and we received quick assistance with our suitcases to our room. The room, which had three full beds, was immaculate. Very clean and cozy. All of the staff, from start to finish, were very responsive and accommodating, including when we returned to the hotel after our Machu Picchu tour to change clothes before going to dinner and then later meeting a member of the hotel staff at the train station, who had brought all of our luggage there, for our evening train ride to Ollantaytambo. (See cautionary note below, however.) The downsides of this hotel include that it is immediately adjacent to the train rails. So as late as 11:15 pm and then again relatively early the next morning, there are trains running past. Some are shorter trains and make very little noise, but a few are quite long and blow the train whistle, which definitely disturbed sleep. Luckily, we had more than enough time to sleep the clock around during our night there, so still felt we got a good night’s sleep. Another downside of this hotel is that it is located at the end of the street before you enter the rural area, which includes the road all of the tourist buses take to Machu Picchu. Because it is at the end of the road of businesses, it felt a bit unsafe when we went out in the evenings for dinner - there were not many people around until we got closer to the top of the hill where the rest of the restaurants, shops, and hotels are located. This feeling was reinforced by a police officer accompanying the member of the hotel staff who brought our luggage to the train station on our last evening, noted above.
