Boutique Hotel the River House

We travelled to Andermatt in March 2024. The River House is a very European, small hotel. Based in a 300 year old farmhouse, it not your typical hotel and visitors , particularly American visitors, should know this. The rooms have no TV's, microwaves or mini-fridges. The ceilings are low and the showers are small. But the place is very clean and unique. The beds are very comfy. A great European breakfast is served each morning of your stay. The food in the restaurant/bar attached to the hotel is delicious! Kevin and Sarah, the owners, are great hosts and run a top notch establishment. The property is centrally located in the middle of the village and it is less than a 10 minute walk to two the ski areas that at either end of the town. We would definitely return to this hotel in the future.

Beautiful place to stay while in Andermatt. The location is excellent. The views from the hotel are beautiful. The rooms are really good - very clean and comfortable. The front desk staff are friendly and the service is great. Loved staying here.

I visited Alt Apothec, the restaurant at the River House Hotel, during a recent vacation to Andermatt with my family. We ordered our meal with the help of an excellent server and enjoyed the food. While our table was quite small for three people, we still had a nice meal and conversation with the family at the table next to us. It wasn’t until the end of our visit that our experience was upsetting. The owner made negative comments about Americans, including references to the wastefulness of most Americans and their inclination to order dessert without finishing their meals. This was after we had all finished our meals and didn’t order dessert. When the restaurant’s credit card reader did not work, the owner was unwilling to take our information to process the transaction the following day. He told us Americans have walked out on their bill in the past. He raised his voice and hit his hand on our table. We were required to pay for the meal in cash. The experience was upsetting and so different from all of our other experiences in Andermatt. We visited many wonderful restaurants during our vacation and they were all outstanding. We highly recommend this ski area and hope to return, but we would not recommend Alt Apothec.

The River House is an amazing boutique hotel. The building is historic and charming. The rooms are really nice. They are clean, comfortable and spacious. The team is fantastic. Very friendly, helpful and professional. Great hotel to stay at.

Just an overall amazing experience with a perfect location. The breakfast every morning is next level. Couldn’t have asked for a better way to start each day with a great selection and delicious cappuccinos. Lastly all the members of the team really made this stay feel special and the food at the restaurant is great.

This was a lovely treat. Friendly staff and I really loved their commi**ent to the environment. No plastic in the room (glass orange juice bottles, and you can get a glass carafe with sparkling water at the bar no charge, lovely toiletries in the room in large bottles so no waste, and signs at the great breakfast encouraging no food waste). The rooms don’t come with a kettle, but they were happy to provide one for me so I could have tea and coffee in my room. Would also definitely recommend the restaurant/bar downstairs which was very good, including regional specialties.

This hotel was fantastic. They thought of every detail from the welcome chocolates and fruit juice to the bathrobes to the homemade bread, jellies, and yogurt in the morning. The feel was rustic and our room smelled of the wooden floor and beams in the room. There is a sound system if you want to play music. However, the very best thing for me was the sound of the river running next to the hotel. When I say next to, I mean the wall of the hotel is a wall channeling the river through the town. A second, unexpected favorite was the sound of the typical Swiss cow bells from the cows in the hills above the town that we could hear from another window. The breakfast was fantastic. The town was also very nice. I wish we had planned to stay more nights. If I am ever in the area again, I will definitely go out of my way to stay there. I would give this place 6 stars if I could.

Great stay and really dog friendly. There is an extra charge for the dog, which is customary, but they donate this charge to a animal charity, which is a lovely touch. I can see why this is number one in the area, it is well positioned, very welcoming and the food was amazing. Will definitely return. Thanks so much for a wonderful stay

Really cozy hotel, Great a**osphere, super friendly and helpfull staff. We would certainly recommend this place.
