I recently had the pleasure of staying at ASO Base Backpackers during my visit to Aso, Japan, and I must say it was an unforgettable experience. This charming hostel exceeded my expectations in every aspect and left me with beautiful memories of my time in Aso. First and foremost, the location of ASO Base Backpackers is simply breathtaking. Situated at 1498 Kurokawa, it offers a serene and picturesque setting surrounded by the natural beauty of Aso. The hostel is nestled amidst lush greenery and offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains. It truly felt like a hidden gem, providing a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Upon arrival, I was greeted by the warm and friendly staff who went above and beyond to make me feel welcome. They were incredibly helpful, providing valuable information about the area and offering suggestions for activities and sightseeing. Their genuine hospitality and passion for ensuring a memorable stay made a significant impact on my overall experience. The accommodation at ASO Base Backpackers was cozy, comfortable, and thoughtfully designed. The dormitory-style rooms were clean and well-maintained, with comfortable beds and ample storage space. Room was spacious but the bathroom was awkwardly small. There is NO hair conditioner in the bathroom. The fridge was so cold that the milk froze! The mattress and pillow were so comfy, soft, and firm at the time. We slept very well and didn’t want to leave the bed!

We stopped over in Aso for a night while driving around Kumamoto, and this ryokan did not disappoint! The service, food, room are all excellent! Just what we need to rest for the night before continuing our journey the next day. We did not opt for dinner, and many restaurants were closed after 5pm, so you might want to include dinner if you decide to stay. The breakfast was awesome and so hearty. Love it!

フロントは昔ながらの旅館風。 部屋に入るとすぐに目に入るスリッパは薄汚れてかかとがすり切れていて、「消毒済」の紙が乗っていても今日的には履くのが躊躇われる状態。 温泉用の手ぬぐいも、ビニールに入った自分専用のものではなく、洗って使いまわしたもの。 部屋の中も共用スペースも老朽化は否めませんが、震災とコロナというダブルパンチの中で、頑張っておられるのだと感じました。 お風呂は、日帰り入浴もできる「どんどこ湯」と宿泊客専用の温泉にわかれています。 「どんどこ湯」はホテルフロントから、広大なお庭を眺めながら、途中にウサギ小屋があったりする渡り廊下を2,3分歩いたところにあります。 お庭の中に露天風呂を大胆に作りましたという感じで、コロナのせいでお湯を抜いた露天風呂もありましたが、大きな露天風呂は源泉かけ流しでゆったりと入れました。 朝は「どんどこ湯」は閉まっているので、宿泊客専用の方に行きましたが、こちらも露天風呂のある広々とした温泉で、のんびり楽しめました。 食事については、朝食は普通ですが、夕食が素晴らしかった。 特に赤牛の陶板焼きがすばらしく、こんなに美味しいステーキはなかなか食べたことがないほどでした。 総合評価は3.5点といったところ。古さに目をつむれば、十分満足できるホテルです。

A traditional onsen hotel, recently renovated and facilities modernised. The twin bed room is large - about 50 sq m in size. In addition, there is a balcony overlooking an excellent view. The breakfast and dinner buffet are fine, though not very special. I like the Japanese style dinner better. The hotel is situated inside the mountain. Access is not easy. There are no shops nearby.

방은 쾌적하고 가족탕으로 쓸수있는 온천 4개 다 휼륭합니다. 석식은 신선하고 고급스런 재료로 만들어져 너무나 맛있습니다. 조식 또한 건강하면서도 맛있으며 푸짐하게 맛있게 먹었습니다. 부모님께서 석식.조식 모두 극찬을 하셨어요ㅎㅎ 또한 직원분들이 밝고 활기찬 에너지로 기분좋게 접객해주셔서 매우 기쁜마음으로 숙박했습니다. 점심으로 싸주신 오니기리 또한 맛있어요. 아소산에 또 가게된다면 재방문할겁니다.부모님과의 소중한 추억 감사했습니다.

Staffs were super friendly and helpful. Free pick-up service from the bus stop. As we arrived before check-in time, the driver dropped us at the main street and showed us where to eat and how to walk back to ryokan. The ryokan kindly offered us early check-in. Luggages were in the room already when we arrived. Front desk staff explained everything clearly. We could only book the private onsen once. Private onsen number one is a bit small, and the water was not hot enough, but the view is pretty with a small garden and rock mountain. I love the large outdoor onsen (for hotel guests only). Water was hot. Beutiful environment and great atmosphere. Changing room was clean and spacious. The smaller outdoor onsen is for public. Room was a bit old and simple, but it came with a cute balcony which I didn't expect. Food was great. Dinner was served in room, and breakfast was served in breakfast room. Overall a great ryokan experience.

やまなみハイウェイを別府方面にひた走り、瀬の本レストハウスがある国道442号線との交差点から黒川温泉方面である左に曲がる。数年前から国道442号線は新しい道に変わっており、道幅に余裕があって走行しやすい。今回の宿は「旅館わかば」。GoToトラベルで宿泊客が多いようで無料駐車場に停めるスペースがないのでキーをフロントの方に預ける。 夜御飯は部屋食。座席に座りドリンクメニューを見ると、ジンジャーを使った飲み物が美味しそうである。仲居さんが来られた際にアルコールが一番少ないとされる「ジンジャー甘酒」を注文。料理も手順良く運んでくれます。特上霜降り馬刺しや熊本味彩牛・肥後の赤鶏等、熊本ならではの料理が美味しい。ただ部屋での焼肉は服に臭いが付いてしまう。 朝食は通常だと1階の広間が朝食会場になりますが、コロナウイルス感染拡大防止の為に各部屋での弁当になっている。お米は七城米を使用した釜で炊きあげられたごはんで、おかずは「小国郷の六品」に七城米の御飯とまいたけと南関揚げのお味噌汁という美味しい朝御飯。 宿の方は気さくで対応がよく温泉も気持ちがよく良かったです。

Ryokan con onsen espectacular. La atención es inmejorable desde que te acercas al hotel con una persona en la entrada indicándote donde aparcar, recepción atentísima que te explican todo y te acompañan a la habitación, con servicio de té y dulces nada más llegar. Baños al aire libre preciosos. Cena y desayuno en comedor privado y mientras estás comiendo te preparan/recogen los futones y la habitación. Hermanado con otros ryokan para probar otros baños, pero sinceramente tiene los más agradables. En la despedida, te sorprenden con los zapatos que diste al llegar calentitos que se agradece en días fríos.
