I recently had the pleasure of staying at ASO Base Backpackers during my visit to Aso, Japan, and I must say it was an unforgettable experience. This charming hostel exceeded my expectations in every aspect and left me with beautiful memories of my time in Aso. First and foremost, the location of ASO Base Backpackers is simply breathtaking. Situated at 1498 Kurokawa, it offers a serene and picturesque setting surrounded by the natural beauty of Aso. The hostel is nestled amidst lush greenery and offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains. It truly felt like a hidden gem, providing a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Upon arrival, I was greeted by the warm and friendly staff who went above and beyond to make me feel welcome. They were incredibly helpful, providing valuable information about the area and offering suggestions for activities and sightseeing. Their genuine hospitality and passion for ensuring a memorable stay made a significant impact on my overall experience. The accommodation at ASO Base Backpackers was cozy, comfortable, and thoughtfully designed. The dormitory-style rooms were clean and well-maintained, with comfortable beds and ample storage space. The communal areas, such as the lounge and kitchen, were inviting and provided opportunities to connect with fellow travelers from around the world. We stopped over in Aso for a night while driving around Kumamoto, and this ryokan did not disappoint! The service, food, room are all excellent! Just what we need to rest for the night before continuing our journey the next day. We did not opt for dinner, and many restaurants were closed after 5pm, so you might want to include dinner if you decide to stay. The breakfast was awesome and so hearty. Love it!

A traditional onsen hotel, recently renovated and facilities modernised. The twin bed room is large - about 50 sq m in size. In addition, there is a balcony overlooking an excellent view. The breakfast and dinner buffet are fine, though not very special. I like the Japanese style dinner better. The hotel is situated inside the mountain. Access is not easy. There are no shops nearby.

フロントは昔ながらの旅館風。 部屋に入るとすぐに目に入るスリッパは薄汚れてかかとがすり切れていて、「消毒済」の紙が乗っていても今日的には履くのが躊躇われる状態。 温泉用の手ぬぐいも、ビニールに入った自分専用のものではなく、洗って使いまわしたもの。 部屋の中も共用スペースも老朽化は否めませんが、震災とコロナというダブルパンチの中で、頑張っておられるのだと感じました。 お風呂は、日帰り入浴もできる「どんどこ湯」と宿泊客専用の温泉にわかれています。 「どんどこ湯」はホテルフロントから、広大なお庭を眺めながら、途中にウサギ小屋があったりする渡り廊下を2,3分歩いたところにあります。 お庭の中に露天風呂を大胆に作りましたという感じで、コロナのせいでお湯を抜いた露天風呂もありましたが、大きな露天風呂は源泉かけ流しでゆったりと入れました。 朝は「どんどこ湯」は閉まっているので、宿泊客専用の方に行きましたが、こちらも露天風呂のある広々とした温泉で、のんびり楽しめました。 食事については、朝食は普通ですが、夕食が素晴らしかった。 特に赤牛の陶板焼きがすばらしく、こんなに美味しいステーキはなかなか食べたことがないほどでした。 総合評価は3.5点といったところ。古さに目をつむれば、十分満足できるホテルです。

住35號房非常好，空間很大有兩個池，通風非常棒，唯獨缺點是泡澡的地方有點使用痕跡，房間內部也是有點年代感，但是整體是舒服的 這次的套裝是有晚餐及早餐的，晚餐大概七成符合胃口，早餐大概五成，用餐的包廂環境非常棒服務人員也很客氣很有禮貌，英文也會通 整體來說一個晚上一萬元台幣，一泊二食，剛好這次旅程中也有住在由布院的界一個晚上，相較起來這間吃粗飽的CP值很高

Staffs were super friendly and helpful. Free pick-up service from the bus stop. As we arrived before check-in time, the driver dropped us at the main street and showed us where to eat and how to walk back to ryokan. The ryokan kindly offered us early check-in. Luggages were in the room already when we arrived. Front desk staff explained everything clearly. We could only book the private onsen once. Private onsen number one is a bit small, and the water was not hot enough, but the view is pretty with a small garden and rock mountain. I love the large outdoor onsen (for hotel guests only). Water was hot. Beutiful environment and great atmosphere. Changing room was clean and spacious. The smaller outdoor onsen is for public. Room was a bit old and simple, but it came with a cute balcony which I didn't expect. Food was great. Dinner was served in room, and breakfast was served in breakfast room. Overall a great ryokan experience.

日帰り貸切風呂利用のみでお邪魔しました。２名で４５分２０００円。 他の旅館が３時には日帰り貸切風呂を締め切る中、夕方でも利用できました。ただ、日帰りの貸切風呂は予約ができないので、空いていれば入れます。普通の内風呂は予約無しでも湯めぐりができます。 貸切風呂の脱衣場にはクレンジングオイルから乳液まで揃っていて、まさに手ぶらで入れます。タオルは持参しましたが、レンタルか販売がありそうです。 女将さんと思われる方がとても丁寧ですし、館内も手入れされた感じが伝わる旅館で、宿泊でも利用したいと思いました。 駐車場は日帰りだと利用できないので、近くの共同無料駐車場に停めました。

熊本に居る長男家族4人と宿泊、熊本に住んで6年ぐらいになるのに黒川温泉に泊まった事がないそうで、わざわざ埼玉から費用全額当方負担で孫孝行しました、、何のことやら(笑) 宿は、黒川温泉では大型旅館でしたが、温泉は夕方4時と夜8時と翌日朝7時に入ったのですが何故かほぼ独占状態、竹林に囲まれた大きな内風呂、檜風呂二つと露天風呂、立ち寄り客も入れる露天風呂付き温泉の3ヶ所あり、2番目が1番良かったかな、泉質は単純泉 部屋は普通の和室だけど、横を流れる川から滝の音が聞こえていい感じ、食事はバイキングで 夕食の赤酢のマグロ寿司が絶品、後は、串揚げ各種とかカンパチ刺身、ローストビーフ、小学校の孫は鰻を5巻食べて食べ過ぎ状態、、ドリンクが飲み放題で焼酎の飲み比べが出来た！　黒川温泉の焼酎美味かったなー、朝食もバイキングで納豆と牛乳が地元産で美味かった 夜は天体望遠鏡で木星と月を見せて貰いました、孫は感動！ 街中散策は寒さでやらず、宿に留まっただけだけどゆっくり出来ました 家族連れで楽しめる宿と思います

This is a typical traditional Ryokan, so the rooms do not come with showers, and some rooms come with ensuite WC (toilet, not bathroom). But good news for those who do not like getting naked in front of strangers in an onsen - you can reserve private onsen (family onsen) rooms (an hour only), where you can soak and bathe, in private and with your loved ones. But note, you need to reserve and they are not always available. Having said that, if you want the full-on Japanese Ryokan experience, you can do it here. The half-board (dinner and breakfast) package is not cheap at all, but you do get the sleep-on-futons, sliding Japanese doors in room, water garden view, tatami etc. experience, with dinner and breakfast cooked with seasonal ingredients. We did not really undersand our meal courses (dinner and breakfast), and they were not exactly sumptous (although you will have a full stomach at the end) and delectable. And we had a better experience earlier in another Ryokan some time back. But again, if this is going to be your first-time Ryokan experience, then go for it. I would recommend staying in a hotel if you have been there and done that with Ryokans.

The Manager and staff were amazing and so helpful - Probably the best service we had all trip from 7 different stays. We had the dining experience and not only was the food wonderful, they even change our food when we said we were scared of trying the Horse & Chicken Sashimi. The view from the in-room onsen was brilliant. If you want to be critical then its a 10min walk to the village centre but thats why we choose this Hotel plus we just drove to the village centre - so simple. To the Manager - Please thank your staff for making our stay here an amazing one.
