This place is so close to Harvard and the people who work here are so lovely. The rooms are small and the bathrooms are shared (which I did not personally love). It is so quiet, the creaking floors sound obnoxious at night, but only because it’s so quiet. I also think the TVs might have a timer because I fell asleep with the tv on, and when I woke up 3 hours later, the tv was off (and it was just me in the room). There is limited parking in the back, it’s first come, first serve. There are not too many options for breakfast: they have toast and some spreads, whole fruits (bananas, apples), egg bites, and muffins. Overall, this place was nice for the area. The staff was absolutely lovely.

This place is way, over-rated, but probably because there is so little available around Harvard and the location is good if you have to be there. Next time I'll spend the extra dough to feel like I wasn't staying in some kind of fancy dorm room. The room was clean, the bed okay, surroundings quiet. All good, glad of all the pillows which were not awesome but better than average for this kind of place. The shower never produced hot water and I had to fight hard to get the water to shut off. Breakfast was spongy mini-quiches, fruit was whole apples, toast and muffins, not a lot else. Staff felt like they wanted to hide. Greeting made me feel like I was entering an iffy hotel.

Before my office made the booking at Irving House, we clearly informed them about my special need for space and windows given my claustrophobia and vegetarian preference (with allergy to eggs). Upon checking-in, I was given a room that was the size of the bed. Staying there made me feel like the walls were falling upon me. Upon informing about the situation, the manager made a one-night exceptional allotment for me to stay in larger room on the condition that I move back to the smaller room next day (which was decent of them). However, the worst was yet to come in the morning when I went for breakfast. I was informed by the staff in the kitchen that everything had eggs in it, including breads and muffins. I spoke to the manager and she assured me that one of the hot dishes was eggs free and that she will speak to the cook. I served the food and on first bite knew that there were eggs in it. When I reconfirmed with the kitchen staff in manager's absence, they accepted that what I ate had eggs. I rushed back immediately to my room to take anti-histamines to avoid any reaction to my allergy. I moved to another hotel the very same day. But the terrible treatment by the manager, putting my health and life at threat, was something I will never forget about Irving House.

I was looking for a simple place to stay for two nights near Harvard, and you cannot get any closer than this quaint bed and breakfast. Service was excellent. Upon check in we were happy to take any room, but the front desk insisted to show us the options, and I’m so glad and grateful that she did! Our room was bright, airy, well appointed, with a nice bathroom. Everything was great except the sheets had some light stains on them, not the end of the world. Breakfast was “continental”, but a good way to start the day. My only problem was the price, which really wasn’t cheap and I could have got a double at Marriott Copley with change, but since location was my key consideration, this was the best option available.

This is a very professionally run small hotel. There were several times when the level of service rose to the very highest level. First, I had a cold when I made the reservation and I asked if I was too under the weather to come to Boston, could I use the non-refundable payment toward a future stay-the front desk person was very helpful and allowed that. During my stay everything was very well done. The next really, really special service was that I left the hotel very early due to travel plans and I forgot one of my most important reference books and my umbrella! I am an experienced traveler and I have a very careful leave the room routine. I must have been too tired. I realized my mistake quickly and called about an hour after having left. The front desk person checked on my room and found the two items and immediately offered to work with the owner to get them mailed to me...and the owner did this without adding a charge!! Maybe because I had been understanding that my room was a little cold due to very strong 50 mile per hour winds that night...whatever the reasons, I was very impressed and will make this my go to hotel on my regular Boston trips.
