Hotel rooms could use an upgrade. Furniture looks tired. No lotion in the bathroom. Other toiletries were nice. Water pressure in the shower was excellent. Hotel looks tired in places. Dirty, missing sconces, etc. Spa needs some upkeep and needs to be kept more clean. Service was pleasant. Food was below average. Breakfast fruit salad had obviously been cut on the same cutting board as onions and garlic. Neither my husband or I could eat it. The fresh fruit hadn’t been washed. Dinner was pretty boring. Chips were not crispy, salad portion was extremely minimal, and my roast chicken, might as well have been done in the crockpot. There was no crispy skin and it had little flavor.

Circumstances meant we were staying in Athenry for an extended period of time, I stayed here on my own for a few nights. It’s an interesting place, with a lot of personal bits and bobs dotted everywhere. You can’t beat the welcome, warm and friendly. The bar staff are particularly good, Tom especially. I stayed in a triple room, which was comfortable and clean although very dated. The floorboards definitely need attention, it was relatively ok when I was on my own, however when another couple stayed it the room next door, it was unbelievably noisy, it didn’t help that they also had the TV blaring. I had to ask to move rooms, which wasn’t ideal, although I did then manage a good nights sleep. The food is pub grub, generous portions and to be fair, it’s tasty. Regretfully I personally wouldn’t stay again, just too dated with too many personal bits in the breakfast room, under the stairs and in the corridors. The owner was lovely, really friendly as were the staff. Just a bit too many cons and not enough pros.
