Having stayed in a number of YHAs over the past 18 months, Butharlyp Howe remains one of the best with a fantastic location in a beautiful building. The staff were all very friendly, the rooms clean and comfortable and the food was decent. Some excellent weather was also a massive bonus for a weekend at the Lakes. Perhaps I am highlighting my ignorance on these matters but I feel that the total cost of £215 for two nights in a 4 bed dorm with no en suite and breakfast on one morning was just about on the right side of affordable for us, thanks to 15% off (5% young persons/ 10% members). Looking ahead for future weekends, it would be over £200 for the Saturday night on its own, which seems a lot for budget accommodation. I worry that YHA are pricing out families at their current weekend rates and, with our 2 children being the only under 18s at the hostel during the weekend, perhaps that is already happening and seems counter to their mission. Overall we had a brilliant stay at a fantastic hostel, but unless we can manage a night midweek when it is significantly cheaper, weekend stays might well be beyond our budget.
