In Japan, house and room sizes are expressed in terms of Tatami mats (1.62 sqm per mat). I have now devised a new measurement unit for Japanese hotel rooms, the Shoebox, the SB unit (3x3 or 9 Sqm). Whilst our room in the Washington Hotel in Tokyo came in at a minute 1.4 SB, the room at the Manten Hotel in Kanazawa recorded a minuscule 1.3 SB. To put this room size into perspective, couples occupying rooms of less than 1.3 SB need to practice asynchronised breathing before entry! Whilst the bed was an acceptable and comfortable queen size, everything else was small. One chair, so you basically had to sit or lie on the bed. Nowhere to store your luggage except in the small entrance corridor, which impeded opening of the bathroom door. The standard layout Japanese bathroom was the smallest so far encountered, although the water and toilet seat were both hot. The room was a bit surprising considering the rest of the hotel, corridors, reception area, restaurant, were reasonably up market. The location was good, close to the Forus shopping centre with its multitude of restaurants on the 6th floor. The breakfast was interesting, with separate Japanese and Western options, although we’ve never had corn soup in a Western breakfast before. The service was quick and the “hot“ breakfast fare was lukewarm, not totally stone cold for a change. In summary, passable but hard to recommend based on the grossly undersized rooms.
