Sadly, we had to cancel a special holiday as I am now terminally ill and have limited mobility. So we wanted somewhere special, not too far from the Wirral and chose Matfen Hall. I informed the hotel of my disabilities and asked for an accessible room close to the pool. We were not told there were ground floor rooms, near the pool, (ours was a balcony room) We arrived about 1.30 to the coldest ‘ welcome’ of any of the hundreds of hotels we have stayed in. I hobbled in on my stick , as my husband parked up and on entrance ,several members of staff we huddled around and there was definitely a very bad vibe. Not one person said hello or welcome. I carried on to the next hall ( noticing a table full of plastic bottles of water!!!), and it was a beautiful hallway with very high ceilings but so cold. A nice man called Alan came and asked if we were checking in and offered a seat and welcome drink. Then a lady called Laura came and said” is it Mrs Parr?” Do you know your registration and can you sign here?” No smile, how are you or welcome. She told me our room wasn’t ready but she would let us know soon( it was about 1.30, so we were early), She didn’t offer to let us use the pool etc , which I would have done if offered. We moved to the bar which had a large fireplace but no fire lit and again was really cold so I asked the barman to light one, which he did but didn’t really get going. We asked a couple of times before getting our room about 3. It was a lovely, clean room but the heat was on low, so we quickly put it up. I went to swim but there was not one member of staff present to ask about treatments, changing rooms, towels or anything (on the two occasions I went there)extremely u. We went to Keepers for supper at 7 and despite a long wait( 3 small tables occupied), we had a tasty , well priced supper. Breakfast the next morning was like Faulty Towers gone wrong. Waited ages for our hot drinks and orders to be taken and then 2 requests for milk and orange juice before the next table gave us their spare milk.( there is no buffet). The drinks were cold by then so another wait to replace them. I ordered the ginger shot, muesli and full English. Another 15 mins and more people complaining and I got my muesli and yoghurt but quickly handed it back as there was a short black hair in it. Our cooked breakfasts finally came, followed by the ginger shot and juice.!!!! I sent my breakfast back as I had lost my appetite by then. I met Laura again who I think had come to help and told her how dreadful it was and she apologised. We went out and had coffee and croissants nearby. Supper was nice again in keepers and the staff were more efficient. I have to say this was the worst 5 star experience ever. We have stayed at The Burj Al Arab, mandarin Orientals, Taj Mumbai etc and never had an experience such as this. I spoke to the GM the second evening and he apologised and knocked our breakfast off the bill. We didn’t go to breakfast the second
