Great ryokan in a place that was way more touristy than I expected. Great food, very heavy on Hide beef, and huge size kaiseki menus, so be aware and perhaps ask them to scale down a bit in advance. Impeccable service, cleanliness, food, shuttle from and to the ryokan. One thing to point out is the quality of the water of the onsen, one of the greatest I've ever experienced. I would have loved for the men / women onsen to be switched on days vs morning / evening though.

Really disappointing. We've booked 2 nights in a Japanese style bedroom for a couple and when we arrived the lady told us our bedroom has a problem with the bathroom so they've ”upgraded” us. However instead of a Japanese style room with futons they gave us a western style bedroom with 4 single beds. The room was boring without any Japanese style. We aren't in Japan to sleep in the same bed (and even inconfortable ones in Ouka Guesthouse) than at home. They said we are lucky because we have a big kitchen on our floor of 3 bedrooms. Yes true but we didn't mind as we didn't plan to use it at all. And the second disappointment was that on our floor there were 3 bedrooms and one of them had a big Japanese door so pretty sure it was a Japanese style bedroom. Unoccupied for 2 nights. Anyway. Worst experience we had during our trip in Japan. I would expect more than a simple ”sorry”.

Muro-San and everyone is very friendly and helpful. They make you feel good and happy. The housekeeper was helpful too. Even though we do not understand what we were trying to say, they bothered to explain and even took out a translator so that we can communicate with better communication. Our needs were fulfilled. They provided amenities like cleansing oil, cleansing foam, face moisturizer, toner, shaving cream and after shaving toner for all their guests

This place was absolute amazing! By far our favorite place from our whole trip. The location was absolutely perfect for the Takyama festival. We were literally right there with shops and street vendors 50 yards away and the parades would have been right there as well if they weren't canceled due to rain. The rooms were humble and traditional and really added to the experience. The tea in the room was exceptionally good and the traditional Japanese breakfast they served was also delicious and fun to eat. We didn't even know they had a legitimate hot spring on site, but they did! They are Japanese style baths so be ready for that, but the water was therapeutic and so relaxing. I cant recommend this place enough and I would absolute make it a point to visit Takyama and stay here again for a few days on our next trip to Japan. They were such great kind hosts. And I cant believe the price, what an great value. Do yourself a favor and stay here. I'm not sure why the other bad reviews are here I read some of them and they sound like entitled stupid American tourists so ignore them and stay here.

Only a 5 minute ramble from station and about 10 minutes from city centre. Rooms are dated (think physical keys and separate hot and cold taps), but comfortable. Air-conditioning works which is a miracle in Japanese hotels it seems. Lovely onsens - one in basement of one tower, one (inside and outside) of other tower. Breakfast quite good. Beware, WiFi is glacially slow in rooms.

The mats on the floor in the room felt cushy and the futons were the thickest and fluffiest I've ever felt. We slept good. The breakfast in the dining room was good, you choose Western or Japanese, Japanese is always best. Everyone is so nice, speak good English. They lend you Yukatas to wear. You can wear to breakfast or to the public onsen. We stayed 2 nights and enjoyed the onsens both days. We went for the Takayama Festival in October. It rained on the main day, but still got to see the large floats in their storages and a small parade the next day. It's a nice small town. Enjoyed the Saki brewery and other restaurants. Also went to the nearby Hida Folk Village.
