The Anchor Inn

We visited here as a family group of six. On the approach, disabled access was very good. Someone saw us come in and asked where we would like to sit, we chose a large table near the door and before we had even sat, the older lady was asking us what drinks we wanted. She was very surly and impatient. We asked about drinks and were told ‘on the back of the menu’, while she stood and waited, seemingly irritated. After the drinks arrived my husband asked for a straw so he could stir his OJ and sofa which clearly hadn’t been mixed. It took five minutes for her come back. The menu is superb. A really advanced collection of dishes, with pies being the speciality. Huge amounts of different flavours and very comprehensive. Lots to choose from for everyone. We ordered and food took around 20 minutes which we felt was very good, as it was freshly cooked. The soufflé didn’t come with any salad or bread, but tasted lovely. The lasagne was nice but the pasta overcooked and too much cheese. The seabass, cheese steak and prawns were fabulous, beautifully presented and large portions. The chips are home cooked and excellent, and the potato skins were great too. We weren’t asking if we wanted anymore drinks, no check back to see how the food was, the whole customer service was appalling. The gentleman behind the bar had a peculiar collection of clothing on, and there didn’t seem to be a smart dress code at all. We had to ask for dessert menus, and for drinks, which again was disappointing. Such a mixed bag here. The building is gorgeous, toilets are lovely and everything is nice and clean and fresh. The menu and food are great - some things could be better but overall a lovely meal. The service completely lets them down. Management really need to focus on training and going the extra mile. There is no warmth and nothing genuine about the interactions with customers at all. As someone who works in a similar size and style of pub, I’d be mortified to serve customers in this way. Really disappointed.

We were looking for a last minute stay and were delighted with our overnight here. Comfy bed, clean room, views over the rolling fields, good shower and ample breakfast. Staff were friendly and the owner was happy to spend time chatting. I will stay here if I fine myself in need of a hotel in this area.

Beautiful set in the middle of the countryside, food service and quality of the food poor. On arrival we were seated and offered drinks, once food was ordered there was a very long wait which was understandable as it was busy. 2 drinks later each the food arrived. My partner ordered surf and turf, the steak was poor for 28.50 no taste and small! the prawns for an additional 4.50 he got 3 in a small gravy pot. The chips were burnt which he couldn't eat! I had the stroganoff and was edible but nothing special. No one came to ask if the food was ok. asked for the bill and no one came so went to the bar to pay, my partner said when asked if all was ok he said the chips were disintegrated to the reply “yes the chips here are amazing” ! They most definitely were not! our overall experience service and food needs improvement. Shame as such a beautiful place to visit nearly £70 For just a main course and couple of drinks definitely over priced for what we got

Visited yesterday with the Hubby for lunch, he got the corned beef and potato pie with mashed potato and mushy peas, he said it tasted fab and the filling of the pie was full to the top. I ordered the pulled beef and peppercorn sauce pie with homemade chips and mushy peas and a gravy boat. The pie again was packed with filling but unfortunately I could only eat a quarter of it as the pie had too much pepper in the sauce .

HORRENDOUS ordered sea food 'salad' the prawns were warm and the salmon had started to curl and dry out on the ends, obviously sat out on a very warm day. The salad was like nothing I've ever encountered.....mountains of pickled onions, pickled gherkin and pickled beetroot! Little bit red onion but obviously that just tasted of vinegar. The waitress asked if I would like to take it home, I politely declined and advised it wasn't very nice.....her response was 'ah' and walked off....no apology or attempt to establish what was wrong with it.....we then ordered coffee and while drinking were advised if we didn't want anything else they needed the table back....we hadn't been there longer than an hour and no attempt to relocate us to one of the many empty tables so we could finish our drink. I emailed the owner for no other reason than to raise awareness to the food served and the potential risk of serving sea food in such condition and no reply.....can't say I'm surprised. Absolutely the worst meal and service I've EVER experienced. I've noticed most of the 5 star reviews state the portions are large, which they are, but it's hardly the point if you can't eat it or its all just been spooned out of jars......for £17.95 I expected a little bit of effort......minimal that the sea food is kept in the fridge!!

In need of a complete overhaul. Prices have rocketed here. Steak sandwich with a few frozen £16! Hardly any meat in it. Staff sit around on their phones, owners can’t be bothered. In need of a good clean, especially the toilets. Won’t return. Won’t go back.

Overall a great experience. Staff were lovely. Food and drinks were amazing. Evening meal had great choice and was amazing quality and plenty of it. Breakfast was equally great. Lovely comfy bed and amazing countryside views and quality furniture. The room had no robes as advertised, bathroom could do with a deep clean and pillows were very flat. Could also do with curtains to block the light as the shutters weren’t a great fit and a fan for the hot weather. Would still certainly return, great relaxing break.

This is a long review ! We booked Sunday lunch. Had visited the restaurant previously with friends and it was ok but not this time. The place could have been cleaner. Waiting staff were pleasant and welcoming but their dress code was random and dishevelled. One of the waitersses was dressed in very close fitting leggings through which her thong was clearly visible. Not at all aproriate for a family setting. Should have picked up on poor service when our drink order was wrong but we stayed. We ordered prawn cocktail to share which came on a flat plate with chopped lettuce diced pepper and cucumber, prawns on top still oozing defrost water. Not very apetizing. The main course of roast beef couldn't be cooked to our liking as ' we don't do that ' said the owner Karen Reay so when it came the beef was dry and very not to our liking. We had asked for gravy on the side and the dry meat was undisguised. Should have left at that point ! The owner who brought our food was very defensive, unapologetic and clearly furious as she snatched our plates away and stomped back to the kitchen never to return, deliberately avoiding our table and pointedly attending other patrons, making coffee and serving food. After 20 minutes of no further response from her, a waitress enquired if we needed anything and offered an alternative to the beef so we ordered belly pork with fresh veg and gravy which had been left to go cold on our table. The food was ok this time but the owner had clearly passed the buck to the young waitress. VERY BAD CRACK. As a boss or manager, you just dont do that ! Shame on you !! The place has no finess or class, the owners so far up themselves they don't think finer details matter and clearly can't handle complaint. Thankyou to the waiting staff who at least tried to help. Will never go back and actively discourage anyone from going there.

Called in around 2.15pm without a reservation and was glad they were still serving Sunday Lunch as many pubs stop at 2pm. Friendly welcome, offered a table in bar or restaurant and not too busy. We both opted for Lamb Sunday Lunch (reasonably priced at £14.95) and it arrived quickly. Food was delicious, lamb tender and tasty with lashings of rich gravy, mash potato, 2 roasties and giant Yorkshire with 4 separate veg. Just managed to finish it. Didn’t bother with dessert but they looked very nice from what I saw staff carrying. Overall service was great and couldn’t fault our meal. You do have to put your reg in tablet on bar but it was very simple. Will definitely return.
